Sad to say, but if it takes special permission and lots of money in fees to leave a country even for a visit outside Cuba, the great healthcare system really has diminished meaning. FYI i am almost eighty years old and will be having my dialysis at Havana Hospital three times a week at 300 us dollars a treatment. living in Canada a democratic socialist medicine country i will be totally re imbursed upon my return with no charge from my medical plan which covers everyone. I pay thirty dollars a month for full coverage and have received a bladder transplant a triple bypass and am on dialysis. Look at the World Health Organization statistics..You can also check that Cuba has a very low crime rate (one of the safest countries in the world), and it has no problem with drugs (marihuana is legal). First of all, they have universal healthcare and it's free but the services sucks. Their hospital building are crumbling and patients have to wait in line for hours to get their healthcare. There's great hospitals but it's only for tourists and you have to pay in hard currency. Also many rich cubans don't let a Cuban doctor treat them so they go somewhere else for their healthcare. Also when Castro was taken ill a few years ago, he was in a hospital in Miami. I thought Cuba had great healthcare.
