Don't confuse the app that comes on the iPhone/iPod and the one that is sold in the App Store.
The app in the App Store does NOT require the use of the shoe sensor. It uses the phones's (or iPod's) accelerometer to measure your movement.
The Nike+ iPod (the app built into your iphone/ipod found in the Settings app) REQUIRES the use of the shoe sensor. Remember this app does NOT have GPS it doesn't automatically map your route.
