@gerryny97 The drummer ist Brendan O'Neill. Today he is playing with Gerry McAvoy and Mark Feltmann (also from the band from Rory) by Nine Below Zero. For me is Brendan the best drummer from Rory.
I am an American, a musician for over 40 years (since I was 7 yrs old!), and a lover of rock n roll, blues, and great pop.... But please trust me when I tell you that the Rock N Roll Hall of Shame is a joke.... and Rory doesn't need to be in that political, snobby, self-righteous but always wrongus joke of an establishment. Seriously - Donna Summer nominated this year?? SHE IS DISCO !!! Hello?? But no RUSH?? no KISS?? and so many others who have been slighted. Rory was the best. He knew it.
Yur rite Rory never cared bout the money or the fame part so fuk the rok and roll hall of fame thats not what he was about Gallagher won't be forgotten
Pure heaven- I saw Rory first when he got the OGWT New Year gig in I think 75? I've loved him ever since, no nonsense, no pretence, confident without being arrogant, and a real showman too. To see the great man with JB, and so obviously enjoying the experience is a marvellous experience for me, and I am sure many others. He should be inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame, but I guess, seeing all positive posts around andd connected with him, he probably doesn't need to be, he's got you!
Beautiful. And Jack Bruce wouldn't be bothering to play with Rory gallagher if he wasn't a first rate guitarist, which his many admirers always recognised him as.
I love Cream and i actually think Rory has added to this classic original, furthermore, 'bluesrevenge', i couldn't disagree with you more, Rory is up there with Eric, how can you possibly say he was an average guitar player? He is included in my collection of Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Black Sabbath, best guitarist out of Ireland.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There is a reason Rory Gallagher is not in the R&R Hall of Fame...He doesn't belong there...sorry folks..He was an average guitar player...nowhere near the category of Clapton, Hendrix, Gary Moore,SRV, Albert Collins...just not in the club...however rest in peace Rory...I hear you were a great guy...
@bluesrevenge The reason Rory is not in the R&R Hall is cuz he didn't have hit records in the U.S. He was a major star in Europe, but was something of an unknown stateside. Ever see him live? It was a testament to his worthiness of induction. A balls out performer, great guitarist and songwriter.....he had his own inimitable sound just like SRV, Santana, Clapton, Hendrix, Albert Collins. Gary Moore.....I don't know about that. Rory could not be mistaken for anyone else. Far, far above avg.
ohhhhhh this is so f#@king amazing...... Words can't describe how good this is... I know to some, especially non-musicians, this may seem like a simple bass riff, simple jam song..... But look deeper, Rory was backstage only minutes before, and didn't even know the riff.... Jack hums it for him, Rory hangs back, works his way into it, and then just creams all over it.... Dam I miss the 60s-80s, and I am so grateful for youtube, and the wonderful people who post such great artistry! THANK YOU!
Rory is my second favorite guitarist and Jack was my first favorite bass player.. I got to meet both after shows... I'll never forget those experiences. Really cool to see them together on stage playing together. Wish I was there.
And yes, Rory deserves to be in the RRHOF.... ask U2 they'll agree....
Bad form replying to oneself. Thank you for naming the drummer. As soon as I posted, I spotted the question had already been answered further down the comments list. I could have sworn I'd hit the cancel button. Ah well, Brendan O'Neill is solid on the drums here. What a pleasure to listen to this track.
Just watched this for the first time prompted by a mate who went to see Jack Bruce at Holmfirth last - I'm sat in Luxembourg and very jealous so had to get a quick fix!! That being said, I also rate Rory G very highly. I made up the numbers on a group that went to see him in Bristol in c1972/73 never having heard his stufff before. Still believe he's one of the best but as you say under-rated by those that think they know better.....
Rory doesnt need to be in that stupid American rock 'n roll hall of fame. Legends like Rory, Knopfler and the old bluesmen are bigger than that stupid place.
If you're interested in checking out the level of respect for Rory among the Irish musicians who followed him, then be sure to check out the Ghost Blues documentary DVD. The guy literally sacrificed his life blazing the Irish rock trail, with no patience for compromise along the way. As for Jack, I've belatedly come to appreciate just how great he was. A phenomenal and versatile musician, as well as one of that small handful of instantly recognizable vocalists.
@imprettystoned .....I would listen to these guys all night at a blues bar drinking my ass off. Jack has always had the perfect rock and roll voice. Only other one in the same league is Stevie Winwood. (ABBA over these guys?.....PAH-leeze).....What's an Abba anyway?.......(Leon Russell anyone?)
WAT a Super video! Brings me back to that voice I heard on acid frequently! He practices what he preaches!...............................Jack & the Irish guitar SAint!
I agree Rory needs to be inducted into the Rock N roll hall of fame, but it seems anymore the rock n roll hall of fame is all politics, who in their right mind puts rap music into the rock n roll hall of fame, they need to let the fans have a vote on who should go in there, a lot of people like Rory overlooked in favor or some half assed act
Every now and again you can see in Jacks eyes that he is loving bouncing off Rorys playing and is upping his playing to match. What a wonderful version.
west bruce and laing live has the BEST politician you will ever hear!! this was damn good, but if you go to west bruce laing on you tube, you will find politician (from the almost unknown "alive and kickin" album) JACK F-ing BRUCE!!!
Are there actually 20 people on this planet that don't like this? They are not from this planet.I truly believe people say they don't like something just to be a dick.If you play Rory Gallagher and Jack Bruce and expect something bad you are a fucking Idiot and need your soul examined
@robertmacisaac The musicians are still there but the mainstream media are musically bankrupt. If you google YT, it suggests Miley C., Justin B. and Eminem. At the time, White Room and Tattooed Lady were on TOTP and the radio in the UK.
OK, that was just awesome. Jack's probably never played that hot since Crossroads, and Rory was a perfect foil. I think Rory played it better than Eric!

@rorrance Yes but I'm sure he'd heard the song a hundred times. Add to that it's simply a blues progression and any good musician could do it let alone one of Gallagher's stature.
@rorrance With a talent like Rory's why would you want to rest in fuckin' peace!? You would float about inspiring young guys starting out on their music!!
@phil862007 I suggest you do some "YouTubing" down the Jack Bruce branch of the river. No disappointment awaits you there, over 30 years and 18 albums of solo work after "cutting teeth" with "Blues Incorporated", John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Manfred Man, & CREAM. Bruce being a co-writer of most of Cream's greatest hits. In '68 Cream grossed more than the next 6 top groups including The Doors & Hendricks. In 1989, Bruce began recorded with Ginger Baker and released "A Question of Time". So GO!
One thing I love about rock musicians from their era is the way they valued that jamming / improv thing; they weren't afraid to fall on their faces. These are two of the best. Rory clearly doesn't know the song, but he's knows to hold back and listen, throwing in some stock licks, until he's heard enough of it that he can then cut loose with authority -- head to head with Jack Bruce, no less. If I found myself on stage w/ Jack, I'd be frightened into the adult diaper aisle. Great clip.
@diddlytube Wow, dude, truewr words couldnt be spoken! And on top of it all they are having a blast. This is a great jam. I probably would shit in my pants also but once you got the feel it would be awesome to jam withthese guys. Rory is so underrated. He is totaslly in the Clapton, Page, Beck and so league! Rory RIP bro, I love ya!
@diddlytube Rory would have known this song, dunna forget he was in Taste about the same time Cream were doing there thing short lived 60's thing.... and Taste 'were' a big band on this side of the big 'pond'...with the Experiance et al
@DOTTYROSETORUNSKI Agreed, for sure. I'm sure Rory "knew" the song, for the reasons you list. You couldn't be in a trio in the British Isles and not be aware of Cream. In fact, I'm pretty sure that the name Taste was on some level a poke at them appointing themselves "The Cream." But as a player, there's a difference between knowing a song (in the sense of being aware of it) and knowing how to play it. Witness Jack singing the riff to him backstage to get things started. That was my meaning.
At the start of (and during) Bad Penny Montreux there is a big guy with a beard off his head on drugs buzzing to Rory and hammering his air guitar. Is that him in the crowd at the end? Anyone know?
So F-ing cool! I heard Cream do this, live, way back in Baltimore in front of 10,000 or so hippies. '69-70 or so. Man, those big 6th chords on the V and the IV. Hard, electric - Revolution and tradition, Capitalism and Anarchy went out on a date, had a blast, and nobody got hurt.
Best of all - it put Politics in its place: a big phony racket!
Drummer's in the pocket, too. Kudos, wherever he is!
Jack Bruce is brilliant ! Rory G. was a saint of the Blues - It's ALL good, here!
@Nevarrus You think so? You obviously know your bass, but I thought his tone was spot on. I'll defer to your better knowledge as I play bass, but not like Jack or John :)
Well, Just my own personal opinion; You don't need to play any instrument to know what you like though!
I just love his old tone in Cream, the raw, distorted, gritty fuzz tone he had; Listen to Deserted Cities of the Heart from the Second Live Album; During Claptons Solo Bruce plays like mad! :)
well he was running his bass through a wall of marshall bass and guitar amps turned up full blast. i think his tone here is good but its great in the CREAM REUNION DVD. especially during BORN UNDER A BAD SIGN
totally! whats up with passive warwick sound??? sounds like he should be playing in a bad funk band!. Stick to the SG bass and the towering marshall full stacks.... if ya got the means then why the hell not?
shatnershairpiece .. have to disagree. this is my favorite politician . if you don't like Rory's performance close your eyes, his guitar will speak for its self. plus I thought jack gave him some admiring looks
I love Rory but his playing here is really irritating and uninspired. The drinking was really taking it's toll. Jack is walking all over him. Jack and a drummer is all you need. I couldn't believe that Rory had to ask him how the song goes.
@andytom I think it is.. i've played guitar enough, and they are very similar. ANY improv on a fretless guitar/bass is not so easy, you gotta have the memory in you. Now, if it were some idiot whos never picked up more than guitar hero, i'd fully agree here! I'd also like to see the live show. XD
@andytom You speak the truth. I started as a bass guitarist and for a year or so I had custody of a double bass - difficult enough to get enough calluses to avoid bleeding all over the strings, never mind achieving perfect intonation. I switched to guitar 22 years ago but sometimes I still miss the bass. But no better way to learn the basics of harmony and rhythm than to start on bass and then move to guitar.
screw the hall of fame - It's all political bs

But as a player, there's a difference between knowing a song (in the sense of being aware of it) and knowing how to play it. Witness Jack singing the riff to him backstage to get things started. That was my meaning.

Jack Bruce jamming "Politician" with Rory Gallagher taking Claptons role.

Rory's playing great on this video. Must have felt a bit like he had Clapton to compete with. And Mr. Bruce looks like he's having a hell of a time.

you don't know what you are talking about - and it's to play, not "too" play

A fretless bass is easier too play.

Rory blistering as usual.

Rory G. was a saint of the Blues - It's ALL good, here!

almost completely changed the feel of the song. rory kicks ass as usual

God.
What the F*CK happend to Jacks tone he had in his old SG?
Jack is no doubt one of my absolute favorite bassist (If not my favorite along with John Entwistle); But his tone is just pure crap here.
Awful to hear..
Nevarrus 1 year ago
@Nevarrus You think so? You obviously know your bass, but I thought his tone was spot on. I'll defer to your better knowledge as I play bass, but not like Jack or John :)
iclaudius78 1 year ago
Well, Just my own personal opinion; You don't need to play any instrument to know what you like though!
I just love his old tone in Cream, the raw, distorted, gritty fuzz tone he had; Listen to Deserted Cities of the Heart from the Second Live Album; During Claptons Solo Bruce plays like mad! :)
Nevarrus 1 year ago
well he was running his bass through a wall of marshall bass and guitar amps turned up full blast. i think his tone here is good but its great in the CREAM REUNION DVD. especially during BORN UNDER A BAD SIGN
georgeorliz 1 year ago
totally! whats up with passive warwick sound??? sounds like he should be playing in a bad funk band!.

Great Jam,better than original from Cream...... R.I.P Rory :(
WarwickHellborg 2 years ago 3
I love Rory but his playing here is really irritating and uninspired. The drinking was really taking it's toll. Jack is walking all over him. Jack and a drummer is all you need. I couldn't believe that Rory had to ask him how the song goes.

disagree- not about the drinking part...this is a cool jam

Anyone who thinks bass playing is easy should pick up an unmarked fretless, and do some improvising.
andytom 2 years ago 33
@andytom Actually, it's easier to play fretless than fretted.
proferic 1 year ago
@proferic How is that?
andytom 1 year ago
@andytom Once you get the intonation down, the frets get in the way. Playing with frets is like driving down a road with speed bumps on it.
proferic 1 year ago
@proferic Well, I'll take your word for it :P. I have only played a fretless a few times, and that was hard as hell..
andytom 1 year ago
@proferic Klugscheisser alle !!!!! Peace
HenningBruckhoff 1 year ago
@andytom I think it is.. i've played guitar enough, and they are very similar. ANY improv on a fretless guitar/bass is not so easy, you gotta have the memory in you. Now, if it were some idiot whos never picked up more than guitar hero, i'd fully agree here! I'd also like to see the live show. XD
DAKMAIN 1 year ago
@andytom You speak the truth. I started as a bass guitarist and for a year or so I had custody of a double bass - difficult enough to get enough calluses to avoid bleeding all over the strings, never mind achieving perfect intonation. I switched to guitar 22 years ago but sometimes I still miss the bass. But no better way to learn the basics of harmony and rhythm than to start on bass and then move to guitar.
lexo30 1 year ago
@andytom Agreed.
Jack's basses have side LED's that mark where the frets should be ;)
gregzeebass 1 year ago
@gregzeebass so he plays, sings and looks at the leds all simultaneously ...
