@cgiwattgrrl99 3Ds Max is just like.....wow. Must take forever to learn, what a mess. SketchUp, you can build a house and be halfway done within 10 minute. I just wish it had some features 3Ds has, like moving a corner by holding on of the axes and dragging. Google should find ways to integrate SketchUp into game design.

@schm147 Actually, you can use sketchup models for game development. Visit unity3d.com and find out. Me and my friends tried it out and it works but because sketchup is using double-faced mesh, the requirement is a tough computer.

@schm147 You mean Source Engine of Valve? Well I'm not sure but I know that most models are in "fbx" format when integrated to the game engines. These are the ones called game objects. BTW, only SketchUp Pro is capable of exporting to fbx. But there is an option by using "Blender" and export it there. Unity is being used in Disney games, so it's not just another hobbyist's toy. I think other engines like Cry Engine and Unreal (and UDK) has a good SU pipeline...

@Jammed9000 yep, looks like it and he said a lot of the models were just copies of each other. pretty amazing as you would think the scenery are all beautifully complex when playing the game, but most are copies of each other which are added, subtracted, intersected and etc. but i'm definitely sure Photoshop was used also along with perhaps 3ds Max.

SketchUp provides an amazingly innovative way of quickly producing 3D geometry, but that only gets you so far. After you model it, you have to texture it, normal map it, lightmap it, etc, and that's why Uncharted looks so good. They don't JUST use SketchUp. They've just perfected where it fits in the workflow. SketchUp Pro exports to FBX and OBJ which can be directly imported into almost any other 3D modeling application, and is supported by almost every game framework in existence.

try to think outside the box, what is sketchup meant to do,

design houses and speaces efficiently and quickly,

that is what he is using it for, he's not using it to make final art, he is making a composition, like any good artist should. again, try and think outside of the box, i've seen guys design levels using lego, a kids sandbox anything can help.

@freaqie More of a really likely hunch, when a game studio has a room full of 3DS max systems for games the last thing they would do is use Sketch-up, it child's play for them. there is literally no reason why they would use it. That's why i think Google persuaded them to use it or publicity.

and lego and a real sandbox are literally childrens toys. and they work well too.

( which i got for free thanks to youtube ) but yeah i used unity 3d. just make your model in google sketchup and save as FBS or something like that. then open unity and import it the model AND its material folder. then click on it and check on collide box. then bam! you have your sketch up in unity 3d. hope this helps :)
