When I'm out and about and see someone without kids in a playground with a video camera I call the cops. Why? Because that's crazy. Pedofiles do it all the time. Are you one? I see someone with a detector I walk up and ask if there's any good finds. Why? Because I'm one of the people that use metal detectors for fun and collecting history.

To also add, in 1999 we dug 22 Confederate Artillery shells in 1 hole worth over $10k at that time. In todays prices to collectors its about $15,000.00. I dig relics and don't spend alot of time with coins. You can dig all day for $1 in change, but relics, thats different a story. Coins are fun,its neat to dig silver coins.And some hardcore coin hunters hit gold coins sometimes.

I found a Confederate cav camp on a school yard basball diamond. Dug 2 nice frame buckles worth about a $1k. My friend with me found a Memphis Novelty Works CS spur worth $5K by todays value. There was also civil war bullets and a beautiful Louisiana Pelican Button worth about $400 today. Not counting all the stuff I've dug in Vicksburg over the past 25 years detecting is a profitable and enjoying hobby. I sold a CS buckle to Carolina Relics for $8K Cash in 2000.

Actually his chances of finding valueable items is just as good as anywhere because parents lose money and jewelry all the time. Children as well as teens and older drunks can go on swings at various times including nights where they lose their money

Knee pads, headphones, he looks like a serious hobbyist. He may find some coins falling out of kids pockets, but not very much. In parks you can find some valuable rings, necklaces, earrings, coins, etc.. With kids, I don't think you'd find much around them, they don't carry much change or wear much jewelry.

@despeanut86 I found a Roman coin dating 128 AD in a local playground. Looks like you don't know shit about metal detecting. New green field sites are the best places to look, the soil is fresh churned, old coins etc from the bedrock soil will be brought to the surface.

Like I said, thin layer of woodchips or not, green field sites are the best for finding things that have been buried near bedrock. Should you decide to detect to a level of say, six feet, then you can find evidence of brickwork, metal work, coinage, apheila or disposure below the soil.

It's not like we're after that "million bucks". In MOST cases THAT NEVER HAPPENS. Heck, when somebody lets me detect around their home or something, what I usually do is offer whatever is found to the property owner, and simply take a picture of it for myself. No, it's not stealing and many of us would give whatever's found to the owner.

Mehh i made the mistake of detecting at a park while there were kids there once.. Every time i bent down to dig a target they would swarm me lol. Last time i detected while there were kids present.

BTW....... You would be supprised what the kids drop in the playgrounds. I once found a 24k gold neckless with a heart locket with some little girls picture inside. I went in to the school the next day. Long story short it got returned to a very happy owner.

I don't think he was looking for change.....I guarantee you he was looking for gold jewelry. "Tot lots" as they are known usually see kids drop bracelets and earrings, etc. Nothing crazy about him.......I personally would not be there with the kids playing, but then again, I don't go around looking for gold period. I like to use my detector as well.

I do check playgrounds also. But only when there is no one around. I also check parks and other public lands, kids or no kids. I just make sure that I don;t get too close to them. I it seems that people seem to be interested in treasure hunting as well.
