My first car was an SS 454 Chevelle that I bought in '82' for $1k. The folks I bought it from used it to tow a boat to the river and that was it. The only thing I would up replacing on it was the 400 tranny and mods were a custom ground hydraulic cam with anti pump up lifters and carb. Those were good times and just seeing an hearing you car brings : ' ) to my eye.
go to ytwoktt on youtube and view my trans am 1st start video. they got the engine started and it wont be long now before it looks just like an se ws6 trans am. cant wait!!!!
@noneofficial It is an iron block with iron heads. Again we used the LS7 specs as a starting point for our design. The heads are oval port (imho they are best for the street) and are heavily massaged. It truly is a hydraulic cam as we didn't want the pain of constant rocker adjustments.
@publicroyalty760 More appreciative vs proud with the positive feedback for our project. Helps to solidify we have something that not only makes us happy but others can share in its awesome design as well.
The cam is a hydraulic roller with big roller rockers. Don't recall the brand now but the most important approach, imho, is using a shop with an engine dyno. Their 'results' experience is critical in making the right choices. We will typically shift at 7200 RPM.
That's really loud! I love it! but is that too loud to be street legal? someone please let me know and give me some knowledge on that kinda thing. Thanks!!
@exoticlown Exhaust noise is really on a city by city level as each city will adopt specific noise level restrictions. We've been lucky in Texas not to have any LEO's pull us over regarding the exhaust loudness.
@20HyphyJulio20 Fuel injection is an option and one we considered however we wanted the old school approach and therefore used the Demon 850 with mechanical secondaries.
The mufflers are the older 2 chamber Flow Masters going out a full dual 3" mandrel bent exhaust system. The cam is big with good duration running 1.72:1 roller rockers and so on.
how do u get that sound?? is that bc of the cam or the exhaust or what? i got a 72 chevlle with a 350 and thats what i want ..is that only with a big block to get that sound?
you've done a really good job on this car. i just graduated high school and am considering building a '72 with my father.. i hope it can turn out running like that
how do u keep that thing from dieseling over or having engine run on idleing it at 1200rpms. mine will hold an idle at 1100 lopin still, but i gotta kill it in gear in order to keep it from dieseling.
It actually doesn't diesel and no need for shutting off in gear (have a stock 79 Nova 250 that I need to do this to all the time). Couldn't tell you why just that it doesn't.
@txvtx it sounds really good man. iv always wanted to know the answer to one question though. what makes the idle sound tinny when its loping like that? nobody has ever known what i meant. I assumed it was just how a 454 sounded, but not all sound like that.
@MrTokeit - I completely know what you're asking but honestly can't say. We've got tuned headers to a 3" collector, then a full mandrel bent exhaust via older 2 chamber flowmaster mufflers. I can tell you the idle vacuum is severely low (big cam, etc) and the demon 850 has mechanical secondaries that come on really quick. If I had to venture a guess I'd say resonation within the old style flowmasters together with the 3" full exhaust system.
@txvtx alright. all the cars i have heard with the sound have a bbc, and run tuned headers with flowmasters, spintech, and a few others i forget the name of.
I think its just the best sound ever.
check out my video of my dads sbc 350. its not on this account, search MrUnknown24. We are restoring a '69 camaro z/28 clone.
@txvtx are the headers and exhaust made from stainless ? that gives a more tinny sound than mild steel, my dads tvr sounds tinny too, but my v8 escort was mild steel and had a deeper sound, its because the stainless steel is thinner
@MrTokeit yeah when you have big cams it makes it idle a little rougher but i think it sounds nice. big cams are mad for gunning it so more exhaust can come out and more air come in threw the valves. but yeah just big cams dude.
@MrTokeit if its a stainless exhaust it will sound tinny compared to mild steel, plus the cam is obviously lairy and it would prob sound different if you were standing by it im guessing
That would be due to the 5-6" of vacuum at idle and the Demon 850 mechanical secondary carb with no choke. Once she is warmed up she needs about 1100-1200 rpm to hold an idle.
the tires are an older 305/50-15 that we can't get anymore. Will have to go to a 325 and that will still fit the 15x8 rim. I believe the fronts are 245's. As far as drop, we ran a SBC spring up front with the BBC motor (of course good quality springs).
gotta love chevelles man, i own one in puerto rico it 72 too red and black stripes but man your paint looks sooo ... muscle car.. i have a 350 4 bolt plane block and i was wondering if someone knew what combination of racing parts i should buy to build it so it would produce around 450-600 hp i would apreciate the help im 18yr old but man i been loving this car since i remember,, keep it chevrolet!!
Hey kevro36 don't be disappointed your car sounds awesome to!! I have to deal with my 305. txvtx what are you running 12:1 compression and a cam with over 300 duration? That thing sounds nasty!!! Awesome!!
I have a 72 ss chevelle with a 406 and 3 into 2 and a half with a hydraulic roller and mine does not sound any thing like that,i could listen to that all night!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly I don't remember the specs. We originally finished the Chevelle back in 1998, but if I do find them I'll post. I recall it is a Crane cam setup with 1.72:1 rockers.
Holy shi-ite! I shorted out my keyboard with all the drool. It sounds NASTY. I've been working on my buddies 68 Camaro with a bored 454, but yours makes it sound like a kitten, even when it's running high 10's! You ever race it?
We haven't run the 1/4 mile at this time and not sure when we'll get there. There is so much power that we'd need to address the rear suspension/tires to get traction.
The motor is a 468 BBC with stage 2 head work and larger valves with 1.7:1 roller rockers, flat top pistons, nice size roller cam and a Demon 850 on top of a modified intake.
Question: "what kind of car do you drive?"
Answer: "Well... it's not so much a car, as it is a snarling, landspeed record-breaking nightmare."

the rough rattly sound you get near idle isn't exhaust or engine size it is the amount of lift /duration in your cam.
