  • Isn't that a little long for a Naginata? or is it just the camera angle?

  • @ishimorikuma It's just frichen huge!

  • @ishimorikuma : Technically a naginata doesn't have a specified length. The haft is just supposed to be as long as the user is tall. Which in this case is a little large, but it looks like he can handle it.

  • Wow that's one big ass Naginata

  • lmao thats about the size of a hoplite wtf! hahahaha

  • jo, bo, so, naginata, yari... I love all these polearm weapons, the grace of the actions is so appealing

  • You can clearly hear the announcer repeatedly refer to "O-naginata" ie: big, great, or large naginata.

Naginata is generally considered superior defensively and inferior offensively to the spear, and also easier to learn. This led to its common use by rearguard soldiers, temple and castle guards, and in home defense.

  • cool so flowing BEAUTY!!

  • Does normal Naginata this long?

  • most naginatas used in koryu are about 220 and 250cm

  • Some styles use longer, others have shorter. Normally long though... ;-)

  • btw. asians are often shorter than most europeans or americans, that can make a normal sized weapon look huge.

  • LOL so true

  • the average size i see being used is normaly between 6 to 8 feet long (including blade) mine is 7 feet tall

  • i always liked naginatas... if u use them correctly you can beat any opponent with any weapon

  • not necessarily

  • Well, that goes for every good weapons. Weapons are made to defeat, hurt, or even kill your oponents, so that's how they're meant to work... But in the end it all comes down to the user.

  • True. I read from a samurai book. The naginata is great against horse-rider and very effective weapon on a battle field, especially many to one combat.

However, They are not a perfect weapon without flaw. They do have some disadvantage on close-area fight like inside a building or forest.

    Nevertheless, it's a must on war-time.

  • unless he also uses his weapon correctly

  • beautiful. there's just something about polearms...

  • They use a freaking huge naginata compared to the ones we use in jikishin.

  • it is mainly practiced by women today because toward the end of the warrig states era in japan, it became the weapon of choice for the wives of the samurai who were off fighting. also that is one ridiculously large naginata lol

  • Not really, it was only after the tokugawa shogunate came around that it was considered a woman's weapon. Once polearms became largely useless they started focusing on sidearms that could be used indoors (swords).

  • i noticed the lady with the naginata grabing it by the end so im assuming there wasnt a blade on both ends of the naginata? the did a bit of nag at our dojo but both ends of the naginata where blades (the usual big one on one end then a smaller dagger type on the other) are there different variations on the naginata? just wondering

  • Weird, I'm in a mixed Kendo/Naginata dojo myself and I've never seen a double bladed weapon like that.

  • Taichi sword, maybe? I'm not sure, it's too blurry to make out for sure. But that's kind of what it looks like to me...

  • Bokken with a guard (tsuba)

  • a normal naginata has a blade on only one end

  • the one im looking at getting is about 54 inch long, 27 i/2 of that is blade, even has a weighted end to the handle for a second side of attack

it is mainly a female practiced style, but it has become more popular with males in the west and in europe lately

cant wait tho lol gonna be amazing to have that

  • I just love naginatajutsu, like watching it as much as using it ^^

I wish I was shorter though, I can't find a real naginata (not a practice or tournament one, but a battle weapon) that's taller than me T_T

  • Most of the videos I've seen have women practicing the naginata. I know men use it also, but do women use it more?

  • it is considered a "woman" sport in japan. this was because long ago the men left them behind at home because they started using regular spears and so the women at home started defending themselves with the naginatas. so it's a women tradition you could say. but there's men doing it as well ofc. unfortunately i don't know any numbers on the ratio men/women that practices it.

  • It only really became more of a womens thing once a lot of the fighting died down later on in their history, and the sword became more useful.

  • Just checked, apparently 90% of the ones practicing naginata in japan are women. :)

  • This is really a long naginata!!! Probably someone who aquired Kioshi stade must be able to use that correctly! I'm only to 2.18m and it's make a real diference for 0.03 for me!!!

  • i have one thats about 3 feet long

  • so beautiefull o_o

  • I really like the look of that one, though!

  • stopped loading...

The current worldwide style has a specific length, but I don't know about chokugen Ryu

  • That is modern naginata that you are talking about, not the koryu bujutsu, methinks.

  • Razel is correct. Most Naginata combatants/practitioners prefer a weapon of about equal length to their bodies.

  • Not traditionally.

  • @mekugi Traditionally, a naginata's pole was the length of your body, while the blade extended above your head. The style of naginata determines the length and shape of the blade.

  • @vampchick1684 Where are you getting this from, exactly? Furthermore, why is it that the older, traditional schools have naginata ranging 6-10 foot long *at the shaft*, while the Japanese people in days of yore were generally at or just over the five foot mark? Doesn't make sense to me! Before there were social constraints on weapons, or before they were used purely for "self defense" (as was the case of the naginata) swords, spears, et al were extremely long.

  • @vampchick1684 that is indeed a comfortable size but it will get unfair if i fight a small japanese guy i will have a pole 2 meter and a blade 40 centimeter that makes my range mutch longer than my oponents

  • Lieu Bieu and Yukimura Sanada ftw!

  • Its my under standing that Chokugen Ryu is known primarily for there naginata.

  • that's a very long weapon. Is that the typical size of a modern general naginata, or is it specific to chokugen-ryu?

  • Naginata vary in length acording to the wielder's preference. However most prefer a naginata to be equal to the wielder's height, to this most naginata today are made to fit an average of about 65 inches.
