It would take a tree with mu c h o personality and hammers for fingers to surpass G i l e l s and Richter. V o l o d o s is certainly one only larger than life new pianist. There are so many vi rt u o s i who are the ones with amazing charisma Lang . Fray? Wonder wonders? P i r es, Ar g e r i c h &U c h i d a have no female replacements or do they. I say central e u r .We need darker forces!
At least that performance has the right speed! VIvace! The trumpet to quiet. And piano maybe too delicate... I love the recording of Naxos with some polish Radio orchestra or something... There's power of Sergei!
Lugansky, great tone and consistency. He does Prokofiev quite well, but the older generation does Prokofiev better. (Ashkenazy, Gilels)
Overall brilliant and convincing performance though! I am a fan of Lugansky, and only hope that he can continue to get stronger until he even surpasses Richter and Gilels themselves!
I don't know if anyone can ever surpass the greatness of Ashkenazy's recording, and I don't know if anyone can surpass Richter or Gilels, but Lugansky is also one of my new favorite pianists. Along with Berezovsky....
Richter and Gilel's surpassed the great's of their time, albeit quickly after finishing their studies. I'd love for Lugansky to continue to improve. I greatly have begun to dislike the plateau certain artists arrive at, with disregard for experimentation with the tremendous skill they have.
Of course, we will most likely adore the superiority no matter what they do :)
Interesting line of discussion. I'm a huge fan of Richter and especially Gilels, but i've got to tel lyou, the pleasure of being able to see Berezovsky and Lugansky live a few times each year, really opens yoru eyes to their talent. I can't think of two other 'young' pianist around at this time, who impress me so much each time i see them live. And the greatest thing si that they are so different each of them in their approach and waht they give you.
this is one of the most difficult piano concertos, and my favourite, and this pianist plays it really good

@lovesGenet Old comment, I know, but check if you're looking for a female pianist who will surpass Argerich, check out Valentina Lisitsa.
