New documentary called "Salem Witch Trial Conspiracy". A descendant of one of the women hanged has uncovered damning evidence suggesting that Sammuel Paris concocted the entire thing for his own benefit. Paris was in the process of being kicked out of his parish and tried to make it look his critics were in league with the devil. It was Paris' daughter & neice who accused people and his slave Tituba who "confessed" to being a witch. I completely agree w/ the theory. Paris was behind it.
I’ve heard that one of the precursors to the witch hunt was that a family, being evicted from their house and having no food or money, they went into the forest surrounding Salem to foraged for food. The didn’t find much food, but they found nightshade and apparently ate the bulbs like apples. So being as high as a kite, they would have split up wandered around the forest till the people of the town heard rumors that there were strange sounds and what not coming from the forest.
