I believe there'll ultimately be a clash between the oppressed and the oppressors. I believe there will be a clash between those who want freedom, justice, and equality for everyone and those who want to continue the systems of exploitation. It's wrong to classify the revolt of the Negro as simply a racial conflict of black against white, or as a purely American problem Rather, we are today seeing a global rebellion of the oppressed against the oppressor, the exploited against the exploiter.MalX
@lukaskaine1 you only have to listen to the lyrics : black man gotta lot of problems but they dont mind throwing a brick , white people got to school where they teach you how to be thick .. dosent take a rocket science.
@steven1975dav Seriously? READ the lyrics. Look up footage of what Joe Strummer himself has said this song is about. Strummer and Simonon were caught up in a riot at Notting Hill Gate and they started participating, but realized that it wasn't "their riot" (all the rioters were black). So they wanted to encourage white youth to riot for their own sufferings too, the way the black youth were. Like I said in my first comment, there were PLENTY of things to be upset and riot about in 70's England.
@iwantcompletecontrol Strummer Was quoted in an interview as saying about how the white youth hadnt found a worthy cause to riot about, the man said it himself.
@steven1975dav Do you not know anything about England at that time? Poor economy, no good jobs, no hope for your future, racism, the brink of Thatcherism. There WERE worthy causes, but white youth weren't focusing on that. Read the damn lyrics. "They [blacks] don't mind throwing a brick," "Too chicken to even try it," "Are you taking over or are you taking orders?", etc. This song is clearly telling whites that the worthy causes are jobs, your future and not just learning "how to be thick"
@steven1975dav I'm sure by "haven't found a worthy cause to riot about," Strummer meant that instead of fighting about petty shit or joining the National Front, why not look at the root of your problems and do something about THAT? I doubt he sat around thinking, "hmmm, what could we POSSIBLY riot about in this day and age?"
@iwantcompletecontrol He also said it was about their cause as a whole and not just in the 1970s and read everywhere it says the same thing mate. The fact is compared to the black population we dont have a worthy cause. Look at todays' youth absolute disgrace
@steven1975dav Okay, this is starting to go in circles, so I'll just leave it at this: the point of this song - which I deduced from *reading the lyrics* - is that black people have the courage to fight for their rights while white people are "too chicken to even try it" because "nobody wants to go to jail." I thought it was pretty obvious but apparently not. Anyways, at least you're a fan. Good day.
@iwantcompletecontrol my only point here reallt is that the white youth in the uk have never had a worthy cause to riot about, nothing more nothing less. just because times are bad doesnt make it a worthy cause. Now slavery & exploitation etc that is a worthy cause.
I never liked the idea of rioting, much as I love this song. How to change the world is quite a different question to how to fuck things up and be categorised by others as better off ignored at the very least . Fortunately I do not live in such conditions as would make their ignorance forever bliss.
