  • As Dan Quayle supposedly said: "Teach a man to fish, and he goes fishing."

  • I First heard this in 1971 Just once . It really has stuck in my head ever since. I looked for a vinyl copy for years but never found it .This is like finding a long lost friend. At the time I'd never heard any thing like it and I still haven't. Thanks!!!!!

  • Great!!! That´s the word!!

  • Today's hip hop don't have shit on this. This dude can sip on a beer, while holing his fishin' pole and IMPROVISE more talent than those fools can dream up with all of their Roland, Yamaha Motif and Cakewalk music tools. They are NOTHING but record company pawns!

  • @9b8 There is just as much shitty hip hop as there is shitty blues. You're just listening to the wrong artists.

  • @TheErogenousZone Well that may be, but I have yet to hear any good hip hop, including hip hop from other cultures. But my ears may be brutally selective, since I particularly enjoy classical and instrumental music. However, I'm not privy to just classical. I'm in the belief that socialistic words and computer-driven artistry is not a prized form of music. Again, in my view, that pretty much sums up hip hop, given their tool set and philosophy.

  • @TheErogenousZone I find it ironic and worthy of mention, too, that rap and hip hop roots did NOT start out this way, and in their beginnings were a very real and promising artform. Now, they are money and fame generators...tools

  • Why the dislikes? I don't get it why people don't find bigger causes to fight rather than rain on other people's parades. If you don't like a song or performance, how about just going and listening to something else?

  • I prefer hearing Henry Thomas, sorry. No disrespect to Taj though.

  • don't go fishing, please ! sing another song first ! ahaha <3 :)

  • really 12 people? you must be hearing impaired.

  • @ap8857 Must be tweens.

  • Thanks for sharing this with us.

  • He's a one man wonder!

  • am i the only 12 year old that loves Taj Mahal!

  • @hoferlg I'm the only 19yr old lol

  • No mention of Henry Thomas?

    ...you people don't know shit

  • My first Taj Mahal was from Last Days of Filmore East. Everyone was great on that - QMS, Steve Miller, Santana, Malo, but I really liked Taj... then I sorted of settled out and waited on Natch'l Blues.... always from that moment on his sound was critical for me. I've seen him many times over the years and like him most in the last decade... sorta just like a relaxed fellow with confidence, experience and generosity - there's a lot to learn from him and his pals.

  • Oh Taj Mahal, you are my idol. I love you.

  • It´s The blues that I like it .

  • Happy Birthday Taj Mahal! One of the greats!

  • Happy 70th, Taj!

  • He's great. No doubt. Love him solo.

  • Ducaralho!!!!!!!!! Taj é o cara...

  • thank you .. thank you.. and thank you for posting ... i love taj! ;)

  • why do the sound from his guitar sound so differently

    did he use any effects?

  • I love Taj Mahal!

  • I like this piece, but the two songs that knock the socks off this aging hippy are . Are, "You Aint No Streetwalker Mamma Honey, But I Do Love The Way You Strut Your Stuff," and "John and Sally " Which is my favorite short piece of music.. Recorded live at The Filmore. From The Real Thing. They broke the mould when they made these two. I'd love to hear them on the tube so I could email them to folks East who have never heard these pieces. Thanks Dano

  • @earlybirddan Oh, yeah! The blues with 4 tubas. Never been anything better.

  • I prefer the original tbh!

  • He looks a bit bored. Fuck.

  • Concur...haven't heard this stuff in 20 years. Mindy you, was a bit rawer back then, but that's probably just me

  • Cool... He has the right idea.

  • So wonderful!

  • 8 people who viewed this video was under the influence of justine beiber...

  • smoking!

  • What a great version of Fishin, Taj does that leave a little gap thang in the lyrics like the ol' masters would do: Mississipi John Hurt, Muddy Waters etc. It makes a great

casual tension and release thing that makes you crazy joyful cause it's fun to be un-

predicable and nobody has more fun than Taj Mahal. Fair play to you brother!

  • Love it,never heard of him but I was blown away. This is so much better than all the crap music out there today, that is written all more towards shock value and the 'almighty dollar', then for the fans, for a message and for what the feel/believe in.

I have never heard of Taj but he is now among my top list of singers !

  • esse é o cara, muito bom!!!!!

  • memories of cornwal with mum and dad love it!!!

  • I prefer John Martyn's version.

  • @thegreatmorph how poignant. Another Youtuber talking bullshit and off topic because he thinks his opinion is information that we positively have to have.

I loved John Martyn, but to engage in "I like this one better" is such a sophomoric. "I didn't want Vanilla, I wanted Chocolate" whine.

Posts like yours validates the math that says that half the world is average or below. And make no mistake about it....You're firmly situated in the lower tier.

  • @JustJake57 'com·ment: 1. a remark, observation, or criticism: a comment about the weather. '

You think ranting about it makes you any better?

  • @thegreatmorph Remember champ. Half the world is average or below, and your need to pollute the comment section with your bullshit just validates what I said to you initally.

Who the fuck cares what you think. Relax, enjoy and STFU. :))))) And I am smiling, and shaking my head as to the inanity, the stupidity of most Americans. Remember you're firmly sitting in that lower quartile.

  • @thegreatmorph Remember champ. Half the world is average or below, and your need to pollute the comment section with your bullshit just validates what I said to you initally.

Relax, enjoy and STFU. :))))) And I am smiling, not ranting you small minded douchebag

  • Does anyone have a video of "Strut"?

  • Taj is a treasure; more folks need to realize that.

God love you, Taj. He's already blessed you.

  • This song is to fishing what The Monster Mash is to Halloween. I haven't been fishing once in the past 40 years where I didn't find myself singing this song. Taj Mahal is going to outlast them all.

  • this embodies everything that's right with the world.

  • That's the true blues, times have got so bad it's raining UNDER his hat! What an awesome performance by a great musician. Love it!

  • My best friend of 48 years passed away this morning - he was a brother to me. 55 is some kind of early. Long ago he turned me on to Taj Mahal. And lord, did we ever do a lot of fishing together! Been awhile since we saw Taj! RIP bro! Gonna miss ya! Hope the fishin's good were your at!

  • @mapearce1 Sorry for your loss.

  • @mapearce1 sorry for your friend, pal and my respect for your thinking of him as a brother. I been listening to Taj Mahal (first album I aquired was a double vinyl lp with two sides of "the old folks at home") and I really got into him afterwords. I think your friend is in good hands now. though I´m not extremely religious myself I believe we will all meet again someday somewhere in this mighty universe... regards from europe, germany to be precise

  • saw taj mahal and bonnie rait this past year, she was great but truthfully, he blew her out of the water...she knew it too, it was clear she truly revered him...he's the real deal, a wonderful soul with an infectious charisma and great stage presence...doesn't get any better

  • Taj!

  • My wife always caught more fish than me ...God bless her soul.

  • Huge! Taj Mahal is simply huge like the Taj Mahal itself; That' real blues. Gives me goose pimples. You really ought to love the blues when played that way. Will bring sunshine in everyone's life. Peace n love!

  • This song was one of my favorite in HSchool. Taj Mahal was definitely a cool guy. Had the pleasure of meeting him in '85 in Austin.

  • Love this stuff!!

  • I am 57 and this music has been a major part of my life too. we are so lucky

  • I Wanted to say what Zoogyltd say for very longtime>Thank "you tube" for giving me so much pleasure in tracing all the songs that map my life step by step.

The best thing to mankind after the invention of teh wheel

  • I just saw Taj last night 31/03/2010 here in Melbourne Australia and he was awesome

  • This is in the 80's - Taj got that guitar around 83 or 84. I remember cuz he got two of em and gave one to his wife.

  • Love ya long time... Awsome song..

  • Got this on a live album of his...awesome!! it's older...70's i think

  • what album is this song from

  • the original version is from a double album

Giant Step / De Ole Folks at Home

released in 1969, it never gets old

  • my dad, a fisherman, would sing this song to us kids...

  • very nice ..blues is the shit

  • i love this song and him, he is brilliant!

  • he is my uncel and we are going to see jim tonight and then we gonna have lunch tomorrow at my house!!!!!!!!!!! ntw i get to go backstage and hang with my big uncel

  • tell ur uncle i sed he a badman! :D

  • @cixon421

Man he's your uncle? That's great! He will be 68 years old in May 2010 - happy birthday to your uncle! - oh, but your profile says you are in school, er...let's calculate this for a minute......

  • @cixon421 One of the first times I saw him was in the 1970s at the Shaboo Inn in Willimantic, CT. One of the audience members was just a little too hammered and thought he was having a private audience with Taj. Ever the consummate professional, he just kept on playing and ignoring the dude. When he lit up a joint and tried to pass it to Taj, the bouncer finally went up and threw him out.

  • @cixon421 Another time I saw him in Cambridge and he spoke with pride about his daughter graduating from Harvard. I was very saddened to read later of her car accident. I'm terribly sorry for his, and your, loss.

  • A deliciously salacious tune. Needless to say, I luv it!

  • 116 posts and only one even alluded to the sexual aspect of the tune.

    /dangles good bait

    //wife'll still hook more...fish

  • @HopfrogsJest dangles good bait--must be a master baiter? :-)

  • I LUUUV FISHAN!

  • ..mi admiracion, desde el lejano sur ..a este artista genial...salud Taj....con malbec argentino, claro...

  • Taj always puts me back in the right frame of mind. I love this man, and always have.

  • john mayer's song sounds like fishing blues, but taj mahal is better.

  • I love fish

  • i love fishing

  • he came to alaska last winter and unfortunately un able to see him

  • 'Tubers, scope the REMIX EDITION on my channel.

  • If you hold this particular song in much favor, I would strongly advise you to listen in on my glistenin'

    REMIX

edition of Henry Thomas's "Fishing Blues," which

    REMIX

    will fully rock yourself.

  • i must say that taj mahal doesnt sound like a blues band name XD

    sounds good though :P

  • Taj Mahal is not a band; just a man- but an institution!

  • I heard this live in concert a few days ago, by the taj himself. There is nothing at all like the genuine article.

  • This song is AMAZING, but (as a psychologist) the Taj song guaranteed to get you out of a depressive funk is indeed, "Cakewalk Into Town" What a genious.

  • rolexsub1, you got that right, his music will pick you up by the seat of your pants and put a smile back on your face. "Happy to be just like I am" great song, great album. Gotta love Taj!!!

  • This is the first blues song I ever heard

  • I say wha???

oh I see you are only a few months old lol, so much more to see and learn my friend :-) .

  • i prefer the original better but this is still great!

  • damn this is the best thing i've ever accidentaly clicked on ever. straight to ipod this goes.

  • Lmfao

  • Stellar !!!! Timeless, and beautiful....Taj Mahal breathes it.....

  • I was just listening to his greatest hits cd and this song is on it. It sucks, He's coming to our Jazz fest along with Susan Tedeschi and the concert is sold out already. Now I have the blues.

I hotp to upload some vinal that no one has heard? as I feel allyou music lovers out there should hear the stuff I have. peace out

  • Mrpastpresenrfuture - I'm 59 years old and music has been at my core my whole life. My head is filled to the brim with artists & songs from the '50's on up. Virtually every time I think of a song and the artist, I can come here and 9 times outta 10, I'll find that artist doing that song. I've viewed so many of these, where the song is part of my past, yet I've never seen it done 'Live" or on a dated video. Youtube 'ROCKS' in that regard. Any song by any artist can be viewed here. Awesome Site !

  • @Zoogyltd agreed

  • @Mrpastpresentfuture You haven't logged in 2 years. Your point still stands though :p

  • pure mastery

  • What a cool guitar! Any one have any information about it?

  • by any chance, does anybody know where this was recorded? It looks a bit like Yoshi's, but Taj looks too young for it to be there.

(?) - Thanks for the post!!!

  • saw this live today. amazing

  • I'll get to see you, Taj, in Boulder, CO, tonight!

    Cannot wait.

    Aloha...SQB

  • love it ,reminds me of my childhood.

  • Thanks for sharing!

  • thumbs up!

  • great tune!!

  • great tune!!

  • epic

  • When is this recording from? How old was he?

  • Good question. He does look young!

  • ...One of the all-time greats!!!

    Love him!!!!

  • check out my account for more videos

  • sounds like hes saying "bitch goin fishin all the time..."

great song though, me and the boys listen to this song when we go fishin for women

  • Anybody knows the 67(?)recording of T M with 4 tubas singing about the big hipped gal from the avenues??

  • I'm just thinking about the tubas... Is it "Sweet Mama Janisse"?

  • saw this live last night

    amazing.

  • ye ye, great weekend eh.. i was workin security, got to meet him backstage and shit. it was awesome, met the wailers too, great, great weekend, lots of sun.

  • That would be great except that this isn't Taj Mahal. It's a good imitation but it is not Taj.

  • I can assure you this is the man. Sorry mate but you are wrong. It is not him at his best, but it is Taj.

  • Yeah, he is not very good here. What through me was the shaking of the head and the lyrics. I wonder if he is high? He just looks like he might be on meth or something. One of my favorite Delta guys.

  • You're an idiot

  • Well, you know what they say,"All the universe is a mirror."

In other words, go back to what you are good at, sucking dick.

  • Is that what they say?

  • dude your saying this because it dosen't sound just like the studio version, and because hes shaking his head hes high? thats called soul my friend.

  • Let me make this clear for it seems you are not getting it. I realized that it is Taj Mahal. I also have listened to him for years. He is one of my favorite blues players. If you will look at the 2nd post you will see that I wasn't denigrating, I just felt it was not his finest performance. Go pick a fight with someone else. In other words to you and all the other little characters out there trying to find something to fight about, f**k off.

  • trying to find something to fight about? I did no such thing. i didn't excpect a Fuck Off for trying to clairify this.

  • Sorry. It just seems that everybody that comes on this site wants to fight and argue. I am sick of it.

  • man Taj was and is all about some natural living man. he use to grow his own food, eat it. man this guy aint on no meth. if he was on anything, meth would probably be the last thing hed be on. he aint on nothin

  • man isnt the blues all about gettin high and dealing with the comedown?? i truly believe it is

  • To each his own.

  • ur terrible and dissapointing. This songs is fuckin amazing. Taj Mahal is a living legend, show some respect.

  • i think i may be seeing Taj this summer...should i be expecting my face to be melted off???

  • why would you expect to have your face melted off??? Taj PLayes Blues, Folks rock and bluegrass.. you should expect to enjoy one of the finest musicians still touring.

I will be seeing him at Roth in 2 weeks!!!

  • I've traveled to some far flung, off the beaten track, places, and where ever I go there's an autograghed photo of Taj Mahal on the wall! Taj has already been there...

  • Love this guy. He has a song called "Great Big Boat" Not sure how to post it. I just have the MP# and no Video of it.

  • if u have windows movie maker u can put the mp3 as an audio file and make a video of whatever, or just pictures or a label, then u can upload it

  • Give me a few days I have ana Ideal.

  • now if I could just spell the word "AND"

  • buenisimo ,,,valla ,,

  • Taj rules !

  • Great to see this on YouTube- wish someone would post "Giant Step"...

  • Awesome! 5 Star's!

  • Just GREAT!!!

  • this is really good stuff

  • I could listen to this all day! A song is always subject to change for better or worse its up to the one who plays it, that's what makes music so great. Check out the first "studio version" by Henry Thomas, 1927. Break the rules and make it your own.

  • This man's voice makes me smile, smile, smile.

  • I could listen to this all day! A song is always subject to change for better or worse its up to the one who plays it, that's what makes music so great. Check out the first "studio version" by Henry Thomas, 1927. Break the rules and make it your own.

  • What does he say after "pole and line"?

  • Nine pound catfish on the bottom

    B'lieve I got 'im now

Took him home to mama 'bout suppa time

    I speak Taj.

  • who gives a shit

watch and listen to Taj Mahal

  • Nothing is worse than going to see an artist or band and them performing the exact song that's been recorded! If that's what you want, save some bucks, just stay home and listen to the CD.

Taj is great live, as are any number of "jam bands"

This comment written by someone who enjoys old, crappy casette tapes of the Dead more than any studio version of anything.

  • the only thing i understood is that you are not capable to distinguish between a studio version of a song and a live performance.what would you like...to see your favorite band/artist on the stage only with new and unrecorded material?man, you must be a big fan...

  • it is just foolish to think that Taj played the song 'wrong'

    haahahaha

he can do whatever he wants

if you think otherwise you can sit in your room and listen to records by yourself

  • excellent and I too also love the "old way" but change is good

  • I can't understand the negative comments here. I don't know any other versions of this song - to me this one sounds great

  • he fucked up a good song, just look at the comments, donn't get artistic licence to do something stupid
