@earthmanbrad I was in the Dallas area too when this show and song came out, in 5th grade, 1975, and our teacher had us watch it in class and talk about each part. The message of this song and the show were normal in society at the time, all about inclusion, peace, overcoming differences, gender parity, love, etc. I'm not just being nostalgic when I say that the US has regressed terribly since then, starting about 1980, truth be told.
i was wondering what this sounded like as i knew the band but not the song i saw it listed in a kids digital chart in Billboard magazine so wanted to know what it sounded like
baldeep001, Thanks very much for posting this special song, that gives me very special memories. Should be played over and over again, just so we'll remember how 'special' and "blessed" we really are. God help us in the direction we're now heading.
One never appreciates these words until they've been away from the U.S. for a long time, and are finally able to return. Thank you to all who help keep our country free.
This song has a patriotic meaning. And alot of people think im racist but godamn it im not. But you know what pisses me off is that this is America and America has a blck president . Are you shittin me.. if this is America godamnit i want a frekking American president ..... IM NOT RACIST IM JUST PATRIOTIC!!!!!!!1
@Captaincaleb1000 I cannot believe I just read this statement. "I want an American President" dude....Anyone who is legal to live here is AMERICAN. America is considered a "MELTING POT" we have ITALIAN Americans, NORWEIGAN Americans, Irish Americans....etc....so if Newt Gingrich was elected (ewww) we would have an IRISH PRESIDENT? (according to your thinking...evidentally.) you are completely out of touch. STILL SHAKING MY HEAD WONDERING IF I JUST READ THIS RIGHT.
I remember the TV special, and album. I had it, and was a new teacher when it came out. I would play it for the kids and we all loved it. The new TARGET commercial made me think of it all again. Wonderful song! It was such an amazing time!
@janetar THE VACATION KING? oh maam/sir I must inform you that BUSH was the "vacation king" George Bush has taken the most vacation time as President. It is estimated that 30% of his time in office was spent on vacation. Next would be..wait for it...another REPUBLICAN by the name of Ronald Reagan.
This is an incredibly wonderful song that lends itself to many memories for those who grew up in the 70's. It is the theme song for "Marlo Thomas & Friends" which was a wonderful cartoon on the morning line-up. It was based on friendship, love, laughter and life lessons. Each episode had a moral message and was very positive. This song most certainly reminds you of when times where great in America and everybody really was "Free To Be You & Me!" America is still GR8 :) But, the 70's Rocked!
@ShelliousBellious I remember FREE TO BE YOU AND ME very very well...I had the album and looked it up today just to reminisce. I think they should have it reintroduced in schools for the very young to see. Helps to indroduce the differences in people at a young age. Just what America is needing for these youngins.. I LOVED GROWING up in the 70's !!
Amazing how TARGET, one of the biggest supporters of the GOP uses such a hippie sounding song... sure, lets elect people into office that would have clubbed and jailed the people who wrote and sang this and for added irony we'll use this as our theme song!
@rocker123cc so quit reading... quit typing... make a stand and do nothing... I don't give a shit about you either... your thoughts are moot testament to your apathy, and you should go with it... or if you're really up for a challenge, print out your reply that was so thoughtfully phrased, wad it up and SHOVE it... it is a nice song though.
@SEANFIR i dont think this is such a hippie song. i mean, obviously, at the time, the people singing it were hippies, but there is nothing in this song that is fundamentally NOT republican.
@SEANFIR There are so many things wrong and incorrect with your comment its hard to know where to start. "Clubbed and jailed"...are you insane. You clearly have not idea what the GOP stands for. Get your head out of the liberal sand. As for Target, they are "free" to give money to whom ever they choose. Go get learn the facts.
@jackdev73 get you head out of the right wing sand. have you not heard of places like Kent State? The right is just waiting for it's chance to turn the clock back.
@jackdev73 get you head out of the right wing sand. have you not heard of places like Kent State? The right is just waiting for it's chance to turn the clock back. Get your own damn facts!
@brikfilm Hi! I'm pretty used to tracking down older songs. I'm in my 70's now and building a huge collection for my iPod. I began buying 45s back in 1948 and now I'm contending with transferring them all from LPs, cassettes, CDs and YouTube files to my iPod. Wish me luck. Carter
This cute little song is getting a lot of play in the new Target "Back to School" TV ad. I heard the song in the advert and felt all warm and fuzzy...thought about it for a bit and figured out why. Eve Graham was a doll...in the early '70s... she's probably in her late 60s now...?! She would have been a major hit in the country music scene in the US. The (New?) Seekers had a lot of great music!
@meowmom2007 They are not anti-gay. They just donated to republican Tom Emmer who is running for governor and who also opposes gay marriage. I know gays that oppose it as well.
@billybassman21 The organization they gave the money to has connections either directly or through Emmer to a group that promotes executing gays. That is not okay. It is not simply a Republican candidate that doesn't support gay marriage. It's hatred at it's worst.
@umpshaplapa The Target ad and the fact I was haunted by this song when I was 6 years old while my mom dragged me to my sister's girl scout meetings. Even then, I was the ENEMY.
@umpshaplapa Look at all the thumbs up from Target. How sad. This song defined an era, however briefly, for those of us in the generation that recognizes it. Now it's just another sell-out.
UGH! i wish I could've been there when this song was new (not to mention the TV show). I now remember seeing one episode being rerun when I was a preschooler. And, we watched segments of it when I was in second grade (1988 - 89). I think a few of my classmates found it corny, but I didn't.
I could've probably figured out this song was played by The New Seekers without having to look it up.
As for Target, people like newmom2007 will eventually wise them up.
@CircleCityEric This is unorthadox, but I might try turning it into a rocker. Can any of you hear those chord changes and the melody done up as a Jefferson Airplane-style rocker?
Ironic that Target can use "free to be you and me" advertising while supporting anti-gay legislation. ~~Julie in Kentucky (straight but not narrow, and now adding Target to her 7-year-old Walmart boycott).
@meowmom2007 I just saw the Target ad that made me add this song to my favorites. Thanks for the info related to their stand on anti-gay legislation. Also, straight but not narrow, I needed to know this. I also will be boycotting. Thanks for your good taste in music and your political saavy.
Ironic that Target can use "free to be you and me" advertising while supporting anti-gay legislation. ~~Julie in Kentucky (straight but not narrow, and now adding Target to her 7-year-old Walmart boycott).
I remember this from music class a kid in kindergarten. I didn't get the meaning of the song back then. but, today I think its about a place of peace that have never experienced before.
Like others, I had not heard this song in over 30 years until it popped up during a Target commericial. Amazing how hearing a few lines and notes from a song can spark a forgotten childhood memory: watching the "Free to You and Me" movie in grade school.
@navarone82 - I think I watched the "Free to Be" movie at least twice a year in grade school, from 1st grade through 6th. I think it must have become a curriculum standard throughout most of the 70's. After hearing the song on the Target commercial, I checked out an old copy of the film from my local library for my kids to watch., and many of the clips can be found on Youtube.
Target is now using this song in it's latest TV ad campaign.I hadin't heard or even THOUGHT about this song since grade school. I nearly fell off my chair when I heard those familiar notes.
Song of open minds, gender equality, and hope from the early 70s is now a jingle for Corporate America. It fits with our reality, don't you think?
I was 7 in 1974 and have fond memories of watching this in 2nd and 3rd grade classes. And I hear it now and think, "How quaint. How sad." Still, I have the DVD and my own 7 year old watches and enjoys it. Is there hope
I imagine the picture of an enterie scuad of soldiers playing with bones and skulls singing all together this song in the book War world Z jajaja. Nice song!

@kid31986 is right, Target supports the GOP. And if more fools had supported them instead of Obama the Vacation King, we would all be better off!
Wake up, it's your country... for a little while longer!
janetar 1 year ago
@janetar THE VACATION KING? oh maam/sir I must inform you that BUSH was the "vacation king" George Bush has taken the most vacation time as President. It is estimated that 30% of his time in office was spent on vacation. Next would be..wait for it...another REPUBLICAN by the name of Ronald Reagan.
wendisue100 1 month ago
Target is a supporter of the GOP. If you want proof, just Google "target ceo donation" and you will find lots of articles about it.

Another song ruined by corporate America.
jeiger 1 year ago
This is an incredibly wonderful song that lends itself to many memories for those who grew up in the 70's. It is the theme song for "Marlo Thomas & Friends" which was a wonderful cartoon on the morning line-up. It was based on friendship, love, laughter and life lessons. Each episode had a moral message and was very positive. This song most certainly reminds you of when times where great in America and everybody really was "Free To Be You & Me!" America is still GR8 :) But, the 70's Rocked!

@ShelliousBellious I think i remember this cartoon, And you are so right my friend, I only wish the times were the same or atleast simular.

@SEANFIR How do you know Target is such a big GOP supporter? Somebody else on here also accused them of being anti-gay. Where's the proof, please?

@rocker123cc so quit reading... quit typing... make a stand and do nothing... I don't give a shit about you either... your thoughts are moot testament to your apathy, and you should go with it... or if you're really up for a challenge, print out your reply that was so thoughtfully phrased, wad it up and SHOVE it... it is a nice song though.

@SEANFIR i dont think this is such a hippie song. i mean, obviously, at the time, the people singing it were hippies, but there is nothing in this song that is fundamentally NOT republican.
cherryblossom141 1 year ago
@SEANFIR There are so many things wrong and incorrect with your comment its hard to know where to start. "Clubbed and jailed"...are you insane. You clearly have not idea what the GOP stands for. Get your head out of the liberal sand. As for Target, they are "free" to give money to whom ever they choose. Go get learn the facts.

@waterflowing2, just google "target anti gay" and you'll find lots of information. The story on salon.com is a good one.
meowmom2007 1 year ago
@meowmom2007 They are not anti-gay. They just donated to republican Tom Emmer who is running for governor and who also opposes gay marriage. I know gays that oppose it as well.
billybassman21 1 year ago
@billybassman21 The organization they gave the money to has connections either directly or through Emmer to a group that promotes executing gays. That is not okay. It is not simply a Republican candidate that doesn't support gay marriage. It's hatred at it's worst.

UGH! i wish I could've been there when this song was new (not to mention the TV show).
CircleCityEric 1 year ago
@CircleCityEric This is unorthadox, but I might try turning it into a rocker. Can any of you hear those chord changes and the melody done up as a Jefferson Airplane-style rocker?

Like others, I had not heard this song in over 30 years until it popped up during a Target commericial. Amazing how hearing a few lines and notes from a song can spark a forgotten childhood memory: watching the "Free to You and Me" movie in grade school.
navarone82 1 year ago
@navarone82 - I think I watched the "Free to Be" movie at least twice a year in grade school, from 1st grade through 6th. I think it must have become a curriculum standard throughout most of the 70's. After hearing the song on the Target commercial, I checked out an old copy of the film from my local library for my kids to watch., and many of the clips can be found on Youtube.
digzmania 1 year ago
This is a great song, but when it is used by Target for its commercials, it can't but be sadly ironic.
