  • I imagine the picture of an enterie scuad of soldiers playing with bones and skulls singing all together this song in the book War world Z jajaja. Nice song!

  • the opposite tack is what i get...WHERE DID THIS "PROMISED" LAND GO? if the ppl involved w/ this project weren't willing to work and fight and defend this vision of america, they shouldn't have offered it to us as some strange form of ironic torture or sumn ='(

  • @aachelabelaaron NO NO NO NO NO, fuckkk offffffff, not every fucking youtube comment section needs to turn into a politcal fuckin commentary, promise land died buddy because you touch yourself at night, shut the fuck up and enjoy the new seekers

  • @Sniz420 U MAD?

  • @aachelabelaaron the "promised land" is what YOU make of it...you can sit there behind your computer screen and piss and moan about being in the 99% and cry in your parents basement...or you can turn off youtube, and go out and better yourself...the deck is only "stacked against you" if you allow it to be...but your attitude shows exactly why we're in the state we are in...your obvious feelings of entitlement show through your words...it's "free TO be"...not a "free-be".

  • @Oz1976 this was abandoned agit-prop, commissioned by ms magazine foundation to indoctrinate school children in post 60's america. days were spent. children's daily schedules changed for it. children who disagreed were ridiculed in front of their peers, children were made to say things in agreement with it. the new seekers also did the coke commercial too. but coke's still around. the boomers failed the next generation. if you gonna brainwash for a GOOD CAUSE, don't wash your hands like pilate.

  • @aachelabelaaron rofl...conspiratoid nonsense...typical...bet you're a truther too eh?

  • @Oz1976 conspiracy? no. coming from a labeler, that's typical.

  • @aachelabelaaron dammit, i didn't know what a truther was, and bothered to google it and now there's another bunch out there i need to avoid...@__@

  • @aachelabelaaron Unfortunately I have no choice in the matter...they show their filthy faces every Sept 11th at Ground Zero and scream and taunt "inside job" at us as we are trying to remember our loved ones. The idiots have no shame.

  • @Oz1976 oh g*d, i can't think about it, no more. gonna start listening to nillsson for a few days! @__@ i'm done here-- stomachache now thinking!

  • MrLucio44, no most of the members of The New Seekers are all still alive and well.

  • i like the song! but are they dead? i asked my teacher but he almost gave me a detention a friday

  • Hey Jackpark! You sound just like an ignorant reactionary troglodyte! Why don't you take some time to think about what a jerk you are?

  • I wonder if I had this song was in my subconscious, cuz I once had a dream about 5 years ago that me and this other unknown person were children and we were in a field near where we were laughing, happy and I could just be myself. This song pretty much sums up my dream.

  • @Whitney3797 Well, I'm 38 in 2011, and this song takes me back to the happy times of when I was a kid. So, that's a great thing about Youtubes, because I can vicariously re-live some of these great moments.

  • Nice lyrics but I think it may have signaled a turning point in American history....kids who were taken by the song became the parents and teachers who led us to a "softer" America. Hard to believe there were enough voters around to elect someone like Reagan. There aren't anymore.

  • @jackpark7927 couldn't agree more. IMHO, the current generation have things without an understanding of it's value. Alll the material goods mom and dad can provide "to make them happy" without a sense of earning it. The world is NOT that way.

  • Wow ! what memories.

I remember singing this song back in my elementary school days then Target Stores used it in a commercia featuring triplets going back to school.

    Thank you for posting.

  • nice song

  • nice song

  • Villain: THIS WORLD SHALL BE MINE!!! AHAHA-*shot by the hero*

    Hero: It's over......

    *this music plays*

  • love this song...love the Marlo Thomas project...my daughter still knows this song and now I am teach her kids, my grandchildren

  • I sing songs that rhyme with Eeee

  • 4 people don't want to be free.

  • Heard It At School

  • LOVE THIS SONG!!!

  • Idunno, for some reason when I first heard this I got a creepy cult vibe from it :/ but i love it, LOL

  • gr8 song, reminds me of my childhood.

  • You and me, not them.

  • to a land where the money runs free... and you and me are free to be groped and screened.

  • Let me find another vid to this song without all the political blather by a whole lot of "tolerant" hypocrites whom often proven the most intolerant of views unlike their own, which is often the case with those whom profess and protest this much.

  • wow. you right wing haters are real assholes. thanks for showing it on youtube, jerks.

  • @lavaxtris1 And people like yourself are no better! lol

OMG! Such a great song and all you people do it come here to bitch and moan!

    Get over it!

  • This group showed the innocents of the era when we could leave our doors open and play outside until the street lights came on. To bad our children could not experience that!

  • I have been on the receiving and and know what I have experienced. Apparently a number of people appreciate the sentiment and have voted it to be seen. REP's are known for their intolerance, rumor mongering and general FREAKISH prutiranical CHRISTIAN right leaning rhetoric. The scare the crap outta me, just like yourself, as people who believe in complete falsehoods to suit themselves, all the time thinking THEY are the informed few... explain Rush Limbaugh??!?! you can't!

  • @SEANFIR

Excuse me but your comment is SPAM! Inappropriate as all out. We are here to discuss the song or talk about The New Seekers and the music they make.

Or just talk about music in general.

Your remark is completely unrelated to this song as does NOT belong here.

Not trying to be rude, mean or unkind. If you want to talk about Rush Limbaugh, do so at a video about the man.

This is a great song and THAT'S what we are to discuss

  • @cmulwee001 spam is quite a different thing. I found a irony that I chose to point out... the song was part of it, making my comment appropriate as most people have agreed with... and to the person that has the next remark under mine, I DO enjoy this song, which is why I hate to see it used to promote a fascist organization. Just like it's hard for a lot of people to enjoy Helter Skelter because of the way it influenced some psychos in the late 60's... hope this clears things up!

  • @SEANFIR

It does clear things up. I guess I misunderstood the first time. Now I understand what you're talking about. And your comment is NOT spam. I , too, hate when people try to read more into it than they should, or as you said, promote it a fascist organization. You'll probably agree with me in that we need to take songs exactly for what they are... songs. Meant for our listening pleasure and pure entertainment.

our enjoyment and to entertain us

  • Hey everyone..go buy something at Target tomorrow.

  • Target, you turn my stomach. This is like using "We shall overcome" in a wal*mart commercial. Fuck, they probably will soon.

  • I loved this song as a child and I remember only small pieces of the show "free to be you and me"

  • Sounds just like a school house rock song!

  • I wish Springsteen would cover this. Don't get me wrong, I love the original, I just think Bruce has the voice and the band to really knock it out of the park.

  • is the lead singer alive?

  • i love this , big fan of the new seekers ,never heard this one its very relaxing innocent and terribly catchy,

    thanks for this

  • havent heard this in 30 years!!! thanks target!!!

  • @SuperPigcow my mom says this song was her fave she spent about 1 hr finding this shes 37 now and this was made in 74 right?

  • @xxnickylovesyouxx From what I've read, 1974 was when this song was written but that's just from what I've been able to find. I can't confirm anything.

  • This song is from a children's book by Marlo Thomas (That Girl) which focuses on stories and poems that go against gender stereotyping. It was "groundbreaking" at the time and the sountrack was a favourite of mine during my early years as a primary teacher.

  • Where are they now ?

  • I hate to interfere with the hate-mongering and petty arguing, but this song reminds me of an optimistic, uncomplicated period of my life whose loss I mourn. I'm still grateful for the song so that I can at least experience the feelings if not the suggested reality of this song.

  • Who gives a shit about Target anyway?! This song has nothing to do with the commercial, its its own entity, enjoy it as such!

  • I think I love this song!!!

  • I cried for the innocence - my innocence - so long lost; tears of joy for the memory

  • This is the song that Target are using on their new advert. Target support anti-gay and anti-AIDS politicians.

  • @SevCaswell So What! In this country everybody is entitled to their opinion.

  • @SevCaswell

But this song (nor the commercial) are abut anti-gay things . . . >.>

It's a shame they think that way, but this isn't the place to complan about it.

  • @PsychofanGal Actually this is the ideal place to complain about it. Target is using this great song to manipulate people.

  • i luv this song

  • I remember when this song came out...just in time...just after the war ended...

  • Hope they're making a ton in royalties. SOMEONE should be benifiting from the loss of my sanity. Hey Lyn Paul: the voices in my head want to know how much they're paying you. How much? How much, bitch?

MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP IT STOP MAKE IT STOP IT IT IT STOP STOP IT MAKE IT STOP IT MAKE IT STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP MAKE MAKE MAKE STOP IT MAKE IT STOP STOP MAKE IT STOP MAKE STOP STOP

  • This reminds me of my childhood. I had a Jr. High speech and drama teacher in Dallas who loved this stuff and had us act out some of the dialogues. She was so influential and important in my life. In her class we really were free to be ourselves. I hope America can overcome greed and bigotry so we can be the bastion of human rights we always wanted to be. As I start my own school classes tomorrow, I'll try to allow my students to be themselves as long as they can respect the needs of others

  • @earthmanbrad well said. two thumbs up =3

  • @earthmanbrad yeai completly agree if we wipe out every race except whites and abandond the idea of religon we would never have these racial problems wtf lol jk but you r right

  • @elflordbob1 You might wanna think before you joke about wiping out "every race except whites," especially since whites are the only race to have had such a fucked up society in their homeland that many of them left it and set about slaughtering people throughout the world, almost wiping out the populations of North America, South America, and Australia in the process. Woo-hoo, that's a knee-slapper.

  • @colibri1 i was joking and besides i am arbic so chill out i only said white because like you said white r the only ones who would kill or hat on other races

  • @elflordbob1: Well at least we can spell and use correct grammar. Hate on that! Or as you say, "hat" on that. Sad-

  • @earthmanbrad I was in the Dallas area too when this show and song came out, in 5th grade, 1975, and our teacher had us watch it in class and talk about each part. The message of this song and the show were normal in society at the time, all about inclusion, peace, overcoming differences, gender parity, love, etc. I'm not just being nostalgic when I say that the US has regressed terribly since then, starting about 1980, truth be told.

  • i was wondering what this sounded like as i knew the band but not the song i saw it listed in a kids digital chart in Billboard magazine so wanted to know what it sounded like

  • baldeep001, Thanks very much for posting this special song, that gives me very special memories. Should be played over and over again, just so we'll remember how 'special' and "blessed" we really are. God help us in the direction we're now heading.

  • One never appreciates these words until they've been away from the U.S. for a long time, and are finally able to return. Thank you to all who help keep our country free.

  • This song has a patriotic meaning. And alot of people think im racist but godamn it im not. But you know what pisses me off is that this is America and America has a blck president . Are you shittin me.. if this is America godamnit i want a frekking American president ..... IM NOT RACIST IM JUST PATRIOTIC!!!!!!!1

  • @Captaincaleb1000 Obama is American and if your not racist then why should the color of his skin matter?

  • @ootm4ever because he wants an AMERICAN PRESIDENT..cant you read? hahahaha. what a complete and utter dork this "captaincaleb 1000" is !!!!!!

  • @Captaincaleb1000 I cannot believe I just read this statement. "I want an American President" dude....Anyone who is legal to live here is AMERICAN. America is considered a "MELTING POT" we have ITALIAN Americans, NORWEIGAN Americans, Irish Americans....etc....so if Newt Gingrich was elected (ewww) we would have an IRISH PRESIDENT? (according to your thinking...evidentally.) you are completely out of touch. STILL SHAKING MY HEAD WONDERING IF I JUST READ THIS RIGHT.

  • I remember the TV special, and album. I had it, and was a new teacher when it came out. I would play it for the kids and we all loved it. The new TARGET commercial made me think of it all again. Wonderful song! It was such an amazing time!

  • ULTRA CREEPY!

  • @kid31986 is right, Target supports the GOP. And if more fools had supported them instead of Obama the Vacation King, we would all be better off!

Wake up, it's your country... for a little while longer!

  • @janetar THE VACATION KING? oh maam/sir I must inform you that BUSH was the "vacation king" George Bush has taken the most vacation time as President. It is estimated that 30% of his time in office was spent on vacation. Next would be..wait for it...another REPUBLICAN by the name of Ronald Reagan.

  • Target is a supporter of the GOP. If you want proof, just Google "target ceo donation" and you will find lots of articles about it.

  • Another song ruined by corporate America.

  • This is an incredibly wonderful song that lends itself to many memories for those who grew up in the 70's. It is the theme song for "Marlo Thomas & Friends" which was a wonderful cartoon on the morning line-up. It was based on friendship, love, laughter and life lessons. Each episode had a moral message and was very positive. This song most certainly reminds you of when times where great in America and everybody really was "Free To Be You & Me!" America is still GR8 :) But, the 70's Rocked!

  • @ShelliousBellious I think i remember this cartoon, And you are so right my friend, I only wish the times were the same or atleast simular.

  • @C5rrr, Times never to be repeated I'm afraid. "You don't miss the water until the well has run dry", as they say.

  • @ShelliousBellious I remember FREE TO BE YOU AND ME very very well...I had the album and looked it up today just to reminisce. I think they should have it reintroduced in schools for the very young to see. Helps to indroduce the differences in people at a young age. Just what America is needing for these youngins.. I LOVED GROWING up in the 70's !!

  • Hey they ripped this off that Target commercial. (that was a joke)

  • Great song - takes me back to a much simpler time and brings a smile :- )

  • Comment removed

  • I saw this on TV and I couldn't get enough of it!!

  • @SEANFIR How do you know Target is such a big GOP supporter? Somebody else on here also accused them of being anti-gay. Where's the proof, please?

  • Comment removed

  • @rocker123cc so quit reading... quit typing... make a stand and do nothing... I don't give a shit about you either... your thoughts are moot testament to your apathy, and you should go with it... or if you're really up for a challenge, print out your reply that was so thoughtfully phrased, wad it up and SHOVE it... it is a nice song though.

  • @SEANFIR cmon man just enjoy the song

  • @SEANFIR i dont think this is such a hippie song. i mean, obviously, at the time, the people singing it were hippies, but there is nothing in this song that is fundamentally NOT republican.

  • @SEANFIR There are so many things wrong and incorrect with your comment its hard to know where to start. "Clubbed and jailed"...are you insane. You clearly have not idea what the GOP stands for. Get your head out of the liberal sand. As for Target, they are "free" to give money to whom ever they choose. Go get learn the facts.

  • @jackdev73 get you head out of the right wing sand. have you not heard of places like Kent State? The right is just waiting for it's chance to turn the clock back.

  • @jackdev73 get you head out of the right wing sand. have you not heard of places like Kent State? The right is just waiting for it's chance to turn the clock back. Get your own damn facts!

  • hippy time!

  • 50 Free Youtube Subs Here watch?v=uD5Zi4ZGLhM

  • i found out about this song off the new target commercial.... it's so catchy i love it

  • Awesome song!

  • This song makes me want to shop at Target.

  • @abarrett72 I hope you will resist and join the protest against Target. :)

  • @thespian15

I do plan on joining the protest. And I hate how they try sucker us with these songs from the 60s.

  • Thanks for reminding me Fox!

  • I remember when my music teacher in elementary school used to sing this song in class. Such a wonderful tune...good memories!

  • Target did, indeed, bring me here! I recognized the melody but not the words. It

only took seconds to locate it on YouTube. I entered 'new Target commercial'.

  • @EarthSteward You are so LUCKY! I searched on Google with the snatch of lyrics I remembered.

  • @brikfilm Hi! I'm pretty used to tracking down older songs. I'm in my 70's now and building a huge collection for my iPod. I began buying 45s back in 1948 and now I'm contending with transferring them all from LPs, cassettes, CDs and YouTube files to my iPod. Wish me luck. Carter

  • This cute little song is getting a lot of play in the new Target "Back to School" TV ad. I heard the song in the advert and felt all warm and fuzzy...thought about it for a bit and figured out why. Eve Graham was a doll...in the early '70s... she's probably in her late 60s now...?! She would have been a major hit in the country music scene in the US. The (New?) Seekers had a lot of great music!

  • It's a cute song, and YES, Target brought me here, lol.

  • i remember this from kindergarten(1988 this song brings back great memories

  • i sang this song for my 3rd grade promotion

  • LOVE THIS SONG

  • Thanks, Target!

  • Target got this shit stuck in my head.

  • @waterflowing2, just google "target anti gay" and you'll find lots of information. The story on salon.com is a good one.

  • @meowmom2007 They are not anti-gay. They just donated to republican Tom Emmer who is running for governor and who also opposes gay marriage. I know gays that oppose it as well.

  • @billybassman21 The organization they gave the money to has connections either directly or through Emmer to a group that promotes executing gays. That is not okay. It is not simply a Republican candidate that doesn't support gay marriage. It's hatred at it's worst.

  • I'm supposed to hate Target for funding anti-gay candidates, but I love them for reminding me of this song. Maybe I'll go buy something minimal :)

  • @usadan Got to Amazon.com instead and but the tv show Free to Be You and Me that the song comes from. :)

  • I'm supposed to hate Target for funding anti-gay candidates, but I love them for reminding me of this song. Maybe I'll go buy something minimal :)

  • Thumbs up if target brought you here

  • @umpshaplapa lol touche'

  • @umpshaplapa The Target ad and the fact I was haunted by this song when I was 6 years old while my mom dragged me to my sister's girl scout meetings. Even then, I was the ENEMY.

  • @umpshaplapa Look at all the thumbs up from Target. How sad. This song defined an era, however briefly, for those of us in the generation that recognizes it. Now it's just another sell-out.

  • Holy shit, I haven't heard this song since I was in elementary school, sweet memories!!!

  • this song is so cute! l luvs it!

  • UGH! i wish I could've been there when this song was new (not to mention the TV show). I now remember seeing one episode being rerun when I was a preschooler. And, we watched segments of it when I was in second grade (1988 - 89). I think a few of my classmates found it corny, but I didn't.

I could've probably figured out this song was played by The New Seekers without having to look it up.

As for Target, people like newmom2007 will eventually wise them up.

  • @CircleCityEric This is unorthadox, but I might try turning it into a rocker. Can any of you hear those chord changes and the melody done up as a Jefferson Airplane-style rocker?

  • Ironic that Target can use "free to be you and me" advertising while supporting anti-gay legislation. ~~Julie in Kentucky (straight but not narrow, and now adding Target to her 7-year-old Walmart boycott).

  • @meowmom2007 Maybe, they'll grow up in time. Somebody will show them.

  • @meowmom2007 I just saw the Target ad that made me add this song to my favorites. Thanks for the info related to their stand on anti-gay legislation. Also, straight but not narrow, I needed to know this. I also will be boycotting. Thanks for your good taste in music and your political saavy.

  • @meowmom2007 What are talking about?

  • @meowmom2007 Thank you so much. :)

  • Ironic that Target can use "free to be you and me" advertising while supporting anti-gay legislation. ~~Julie in Kentucky (straight but not narrow, and now adding Target to her 7-year-old Walmart boycott).

  • i swear i sang this in music class in elementary school.

  • Best part 0:40

  • @frostyspoonrs2 I can kind of understand that. It's one of the more exciting points in the song.

  • Has anyone got the BANJO TABS to this? I'd reaaaally appreciate it!

  • I remember this from music class a kid in kindergarten. I didn't get the meaning of the song back then. but, today I think its about a place of peace that have never experienced before.

  • We had such a beautiful dream for this world back then...

  • @gameshowluvr86 Somewhere in the world, the dream is still alive. I was the kind of against-the-grain child that Marlo Thomas was trying to promote.

  • Damn Target for getting this addictive hippie song stuck in my head.

  • @Dancerpaw I know. I haven't even counted the number of times I've played it tonight! (August 11, 2010)

  • I remember this being in some educational kids films that were shown in elementry schools back in te 70's.

  • Heard this on a back-to-school commercial...takes me back!

  • Go target commercials! Everytime that commercial comes up I start singing this :)

  • This makes me cry... :.-)

  • Like others, I had not heard this song in over 30 years until it popped up during a Target commericial. Amazing how hearing a few lines and notes from a song can spark a forgotten childhood memory: watching the "Free to You and Me" movie in grade school.

  • @navarone82 - I think I watched the "Free to Be" movie at least twice a year in grade school, from 1st grade through 6th. I think it must have become a curriculum standard throughout most of the 70's. After hearing the song on the Target commercial, I checked out an old copy of the film from my local library for my kids to watch., and many of the clips can be found on Youtube.

  • This is a great song, but when it is used by Target for its commercials, it can't but be sadly ironic.

  • I just aged 30 years in about 30 seconds!

Target is now using this song in it's latest TV ad campaign.I hadin't heard or even THOUGHT about this song since grade school. I nearly fell off my chair when I heard those familiar notes.

  • Gotta love Target commercials! ^^ Vote me up if you clicked this because of the commercial!!

  • thumbs up if your viewer 16,999

  • Forgot about this song until I heard it on a Target commercial...

  • . . . Wonderful memories. The perfect song to listen to whilst running naked along the beach, lol. I'm free to be ME. ;-)

  • Thanks for the memories!

  • This song is so happy! .....Thanks, Youtube and the New Seekers....

  • who's on lead vocals?

  • This is the happiest song Ive ever hea
