Of all the games I have I played. Of all the RPGs I have beaten and all the heartache I have seen...
Lenneth and Lucian from Valkyrie Profile
Arc and Kukuru from Arc the Lad
Galuf's fight with ExDeath in Final Fantasy V
And numerous other games.
This one still hits the hardest. Every time I hear it, it brings a tear to my eye as I remember the most heart wrenching story I have ever seen in a video game, and the music that conveyed all of the emotion.
If you listen carefully, you can actually discover that Locke's theme is a slightly more energetic and upbeat mix of this. It really gives the song a whole new meaning.
You can almost make out the inner monologue within Locke's mind, as he breaks down into tears clutching her at the depth of the ravine, pleading to anyone, anything for her to be alright to live.
Why did you do this? Why did I have to bring you here with me? What am I going to do without you?
And the aftermath when she awakens, the shock and despair that drowns him down and takes him into desperation.
Finally at the moment when she comes lucid before nearly coming to death... Play the game.
you know, just on a fun side this reminds me of dark angel with alec and his rachel. locke and alec were young adventurous rebels, had their sweethearts, both felt they were responsible for those rachels' deaths! alec with manticore, locke with the cave quake. not their doing, they couldn't stop their sweethearts from dying, even when both rachels lived in a coma also! well dark angel's rachel lived with it for 2, FFVI's rachel harbored the phoenix esper! unrequited love hurts, doesn't it men?
@ThiagoZeroUm I couldn't agree more. FF6 is when a games soundtrack became important. Games that followed it, all tried to have amazing music. Ex: Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and onto the playstation with FF7. Aerith's theme is very similar Celes' and Gau's themes. But this game, nearly every game used the same music from their prior games. Super Castlevania rehashed, FF4 was similiar to other entries, Zelda was similar. FF6 broke the mold.
People don't believe me when I tell them VI is better than even VII, This is one of the best reasons why this game is the greatest. Everything is just perfect about it all.
@zidanetribal661 OMG! Go play final fantasy 6 it's the bestof the series. well, Locke and Rachel used to be a love couple, but one day. Lock that her to a cave to give her a gift, Locke was crossing the bridge when Rachel saw that the bridge was fallig apart she run to him and pushed him, and she fall. Due to this fall she lost her memorie and didn't reminded Locke anymore. Her father put the guilty over Locke and he left the village after inumerous tries to talk with her.
@zidanetribal661 But one day he went back to the village and find out she was death due to Kefka's men attacks in the town. She reminded everything, a few moments ealier, what happened with her in all the emotion and the heat of the attack on her town... Her last words was:
@zidanetribal661 She died, and he kept her preserved, because in the land there was a treasure so great, so enormously powerful, that it could restore her life. And as fate would have it... go play the game, it's not what you'd expect :)
Thank you for publishing it! Locke was one of my favorite characters in FF6, and this track remains in my memory since long. I even hope someday a good enough singer could make a fan vocal of it. But if I listen to that vocal, I'll need handkerchieves to shed the tears I would pour!!
Getting the Phoenix Phantom Beast/Esper was the saddest... even with some giving their lives to aide you, the Phoenix was so appropriate for Lock(e) and Rachel. I love Final Fantasy VI ;_;
Sakaguchi and Uematsu are geniuses, combined, they are Omnipotent. Seriously, check out Lost Odyssey and The Last Story, both great games made by the same duo.
Final Fantasy III has by far the greatest soundtrack of all time. The game was the most well designed, most creative, game on the snes.It will always be my personal favorite 2d game ever. and my second favorite game of all time. The last amazing ff game.
@Famicomnoobation agree with you. Most of the best RPGs were originally made for the SNES: FFIV, FFV, FFVI, Tales of Phantasia, Zelda: Link to the Past, Terranigma, Chrono Trigger, ...
This song belongs to a long-ago girlfriend. We were to be married in the spring of 1998...but she fell ever-deeper into schizophrenia...and in a moment of clarity she told me "even if I get medicated and treated for this, I will never be that same girl you once loved. The spirit that animates me destroys me." We broke up, and friends told me "you were the only thing holding her together." I miss her. 13 years later I still love her...and feel a lot like Locke since I couldn't protect her.
@SimuLord That's so terrible... I'm sorry for everything you had to endure... Do you keep in contact...? Please neglect this comment if it's too much of a personal question.
@SimuLord Stay strong friend~ You're happy story will come in due time because I feel you deserve it after all your sorrow, much like Locke~ He may have lost Rachel, but he gained many new allies and hopes in the end of his story : ) Always believe~
This song personifies the abject failure that locke felt when he let rachel fall. Then it personifies the relief when she forgave him. holy hell you couldn't be more right on with this. i just made myself cry explaining that :')
Saddest SNES music? I'd say saddest music ever ;_; Seriously, the emotion evoked by this piece is honestly one of my number one reasons for loving FF6
This song is absolutely amazing and I LOVE it. The story behind it adds so much emotion that you can't help but feel you're right there with them. That being said, never, EVER, listen to this after a breakup.
@RizaruX Hell yeah, me too!! I knew about FFVI thanks to this guy! And... this is my favourite game ever! This song is awesome, by the way. I couldn't help crying a little to this :')
Of course, not to troll the moment, but it goes without saying that Locke Cole's cannon appearance would be more on par with Nomura's art, i.e the way he looks in 1:28 onwards.
Damn I completely forgot about the background story of Locke, let alone from anybody of this game. I have to play it again someday I guess. All I can remember from Locke was that he was a thief and I called him Jake lol.
@gunsniper414 Then why does he have the Skill "Steal?" Steal is a thief's skill, not a treasure hunter. I don't even recall a class called treasure hunter.
@BlazingNetwork I can't tell if you kidding or not but you do relieze that Locke being a Treasure Hunter is a joke. In the game, whenever someone calls him a thief, he insists that he's a treasure hunter because he doesn't want to admit he's a thief :P
@gunsniper414 THIEF: person that steal or get stuff from other people, for his own use or for to sell it to a third party.
TREASURE HUNTER: a person that steal antique relics or ancient trasure, by raiding ancient sacred places or wherever.. also for selling it to a third party (museums, private collectors, etc) .
War can be a great many things. It can be a struggle for liberty, a path for revenge, a way to end all war, a conflict for power, pure entertainment, purpose, etc.
Communicating only works until there is a great dichotomy and goals are no longer shared. As for entertainment, I agree with you. But not everyone is of the same sentiment. Please remember that I wasn't promoting war.. Thus is as MORAL RELATIVITY goes. I will quote William Shakespeare."There is no good or evil, but thinking makes it so." Remember that you will eventually have to fight people who want to fight...or die.
