I'm cambodian but, I do admit that my cambodian is super rusty. I want to learn to say proper sentences in khmer. It's embarrassing when I have to speak cambodian at my job and the person doesn't understand well if they are first generation. I do want to learn.

wow.. nice.. its so hard to find a khmer person whos born in the US that speaks khmer pretty well. u do not understand how frustrating it is for me in the US. i have khmer friends who rarely speaks it. i was born in the US i think i speak khmer pretty well and its so hard to come across another person that does too. and also read and write. i taught english and khmer in cambodia for a year.. glad to say you are pretty good. lol maybe one day we should teach together.. hmmm jk jk..

Well, the bad thing is their kid doesnt know how to speak Khmer and make their English worst too. The parent should tell their kid to speak Khmer only and if they dont punish them for example, cut their monthly allowed and etc. I think I will do that to my kid when I have kidlol.

@muydramasfan only if there were people like you lol I wouldnt have to make this video. But yes, I agree some parents are a bit too lenient when it comes to speaking Khmer at home. Im glad that you understand the problem lol. I will also do the same when I have kids.

I totally agree with you that we Khmer and Khmer American (Khmer born here) should know how to speak and it would be good if we know how to write too. As i know most Khmer people who born here don't know how to speak Khmer and it sad to know that. I think the first thing we should do is to persuade the parent to speak Khmer only to their kid instead of English b/c as I know most Khmer parent know little English and they speak English to their kid.

@muydramasfan You hit it right on the spot! Family is the major source for young children to learn how to speak Khmer. I think parents should teach their kids when they're young so it would become more natural or NOT awkward when they're older.

I don't know anyone who can speak it (apart from my friends in Cambodia) so I have no-one to listen to or learn with. I was looking for a teacher for a whole year and even willing to travel to London on weekly basis but could not find a teacher and now I have no money to pay for lessons any more. :-(

( But while looking for videos/information about Khmer New Year 2010 I came across this one: I never thought there'd be Khmer lessons in YouTube! It's so nice to hear Khmer spoken clearly, too

Hi, I'm glad that you cant at least understand. As far as speaking goes, its really up to you. You have to practice speaking it as often as possible especially to your relatives. Again if you ever need help, like i said in this video, feel free to ask. =]

I think you should make a video of general phrases to say. for example, make a video like "this is how you greet people: Chumreapsua" or how to say how are you? or how to ask questions, how to say yes and no, or how to say helllo, good bye, thank you, you're welcome.
