I remember the original controversy ( has it really been 18 years?) and by all rights Letterman clearly earned the throne as successor to Johnny. Carson and Letterman both have genius, and are distinct. Others seem to be derivative of either one or a combination of both of those guys. Leno must have appeal, but I don't see it. Conan O'Brien is hugely talented--not unique-but there is nothing wrong with that, and clearly the right choice at this time. NBC decided not to make the same mistake twice.

Leno is entertaining, Fallon puts me to sleep, (perhaps because of the time it airs), Ferguson is funny, Letterman is consistent and Conan does well, but only with a young audience... and is very inconsistent. Maybe its the writers, but he has a say in who writes the material, so who is at fault? NBC could have handled this better, but I expect that Leno's ratings will eclipse those produced by Conan and the Tonight Show will be back to 5M+ viewers again & give competition to Letterman too.

In 2004 Leno #1 was FORCED to retire in 2009, after being host only for 12 yrs, because CoCo threatend to quit. The right thing has nothing to do with it. It was up to the NBC executives. Leno was offered and he accepted. Conan was NOT offered the show. So that's the end of it. Leno did nothing wrong. Jimmy Kimmel is funnier than all of them!

Carson and Letterman both have genius, and are distinct. Others seem to be derivative of either one or a combination of both of those guys. Leno must have appeal, but I don't see it. Conan O'Brien is hugely talented--not unique-but there is nothing wrong with that, and clearly the right choice at this time. NBC decided not to make the same mistake twice.

Leno is entertaining, Fallon puts me to sleep, (perhaps because of the time it airs), Ferguson is funny, Letterman is consistent and Conan does well, but only with a young audience... and is very inconsistent. Maybe its the writers, but he has a say in who writes the material, so who is at fault? NBC could have handled this better, but I expect that Leno's ratings will eclipse those produced by Conan and the Tonight Show will be back to 5M+ viewers again & give competition to Letterman too.
