I studies this poem for EngLit in 1979. I can still recite it by heart. I visited San Francisco where Gunn spent his life (he was English although considered American, by Americans!). I bought a copy of the San Francisco Times and there was a 3 page spread about Thom Gunn who had died exactly one year before to the day. He was a meth user at 72 and frequented gay clubs much of the time trading on his name. He was apparently dead for several days before his house mates forced his door. Star
