I saw these guy as "The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo" on one nite back in the mid(?)-70's at The Icehouse in Pasadena, CA, after I walked (stumbled, actually) over from The Handlebars Saloon cuz the house band there, "Van Hailin'", or someting lke that ;-) , wasn't sounding too good to me that nite. Both bands left a lasting impression on me. Imagine that. The next nite at The Icehouse I saw the Smothers Bros. What a foul mouth couple-o-guys they were! Laughed my F...ing ass off!
Reading the comments, I kept smiling everytime I read something on the lines of "oh wait, 'Not my slave' isn't lip-synched!" (for the record, I thought it was too, the first time I watched the video). It just confirms how awesome they were playing live, and how difficult it really is to tell apart a live performance and a studio-recorded one.
too awesome..didn't know they were on the telethon....spectacular! My oldest has Duchenne MD, and everything that MDA does is so greatly appreciated and all the artists that contribute....
"We close our eyes" was on a loop while "Not my slave" was performed live. You can totallly tell. (If you don't believe me tell me why Danny "Checks" sound between songs? Awesome band though!
I'm curious if they did "Not My Slave" live because the telethon wouldn't have approved it if they knew what was going to be played. It's relatively wholesome but some of the lyrics could have been considered too controversial at that point.
i'm pretty sure that it was planned because if you notice in the background, the saxes don't play on "We Close Our Eyes". They start playing with "Not My Slave".
Wha', wait a minute, "Not My Slave" isn't lip synced. Awesome. That last moan he did right before the very last "you're not my slave"? Yeah. Cummed. Damn right, "Thank you." to Oingo Boingo, old man.
this video absolutely rocks!!! Oingo boingo just brings back so many memories for those of us that came of age in Southern California in the late '80s. Elfman is just an absolute god when he sings these two songs
I swear, Danny's voice is like a dove's coo from heaven...
Anyway, is it me, or does it look like he has FANGS? Because that's the case for roughly 60% of the footage and photos that I've seen of him with his mouth open and teeth exposed. Not to mention that he apparently is rather inactive during the daylight hours. It's little wonder he's called "the red headed vampire".
Yep, he's even said, "sunlight makes me ill and lethargic."
And 'red-haired/red headed vampire' is somewhat of a nickname that I've seen once or twice on the internet. And given the things I just took note of, it's a damn fitting name, too.
Yeah, it's confusing because he DOESN'T lip sync "Not My Slave." I would say because "We Close Our Eyes" is a vocally demanding song and he may have been sick, but "Not My Slave" is pretty demanding as well.
If anyone has Danny's phone number, call him and ask him why he did this.
No one has considered the technical demands of this performance. The stage was set for one set of instruments, audio levels, movements, and that was it. There was an act before and an act after. The pre-recording gave the technical crew time to scramble and make it work.
Artists have no say in this setting. I've done plenty of quick turn around performances; it's all up to the crew. And they control the electricity, so they win.
A magical Blast from the Past ! Danny Elfman's a f_cking genius

Bizarre. Jerry Lewis introducing Oingo Boingo. Doesn't seem right. That said, this is by far my favorite Boingo song. Especially when it's done live.

Elfman is a god of singing IN GENERAL.
I grew up listenting to great singers like Nana Mouskouri and Demis Roussos, and Danny Elfman's voice STILL amazes me.

"We Close Our Eyes" IS lip-synched. Sadly, it seems that's just one of the times that Elfman lip-synched during a performance.
