It's funny how Michaels and Bernstein start off by pointing out strategies and calling the fight like any other. Then by midway thru the first they start screaming and yelling just like all the rest of us did that night.
THIS IS WHAT BOXING SHOULD FUCKING LOOK LIKE!!! Hagler, Hearns, Sugar Ray - they all fought each other like animals and they weren't pussies like Mayweather and Pacquiao, they respected each other unlike Chisora and Haye! Dear God, I won't ask you how the pyramids were built, I won't ask you is there an afterlife, hell I wont even ask you do miracles exist, the only question I'd like to ask you WHY WAS I BORN TODAY AND NOT 30 YEARS AGO?!?!?!?
Fantastic fight, esp 1st rd. Only thing I recall closest to this action was the Foreman Lyle fight in 1976, where each knocked the other down 2X, and they were just wildly swinging at each other. Hagler and hearms were much more scientific, even though brawling. Have to disagree with announcer---Hagler wsa not "hurt" in 1st rd. He may have felt Hearns and was cut but was not in any danger. Dont know what it would have taken to knock marvin down
Tommy Hearns hit like a fucking freight-train. He was known to knock cruiserweights and heavyweights in sparring. It just amazes me how well Marvin Hagler took his best shots, and kept coming forward. This is the only time in over 60 fights, where I saw Hagler genuinely hurt, and clinching. Marvin was the real "Baddest Man on the Planet"!
una pelea de dos grandes de la historia luchadores asi ya no hay en este tienpo los mejores a mencionando tanbien a ROBERTO DURAN arias (MANO DE PIEDRA)
Maybe the best 3 round fight in history. These guys gave you more action in 8 minutes, than most fighters can give you in 12 rounds today. What warriors they were. I rank Hagler and Hearns as better than Sugar Ray. What heart Hearns displayed and Hagler, well, he was one of the great sluggers of all-time. Thanks for posting!
This isn't boxing, this is a street fight. Hagler has granite for a chin, which is why he won. People got their money's worth. The fighters were underpaid.
I dont understand it, I simply do not understand it ! How in the name of fuck, can a man watch CRICKET or GOLF, When you have this ? It does not add up !!!
tonycap1. what fight were u watching? Herns Gave is all n all in this fight. the only boxer puncher to knock roberto duran, the fight before this one let me remind you. i've been living in vegas for over 30 years and let me tell u that all and i mean all the great ones have boxed here and i've been ringside to witness some of the best boxing in the universe!!!
@tonycapt1 You dont know shit Hearns had an equal heart in this fight, he broke his right hand in the first round on Haglers head and fought on, he just was using his natural attributes to his advantage not running. All respects to Both Warriors, zero @tonycapt1
tommy hearns was too confidents that because he k.o. roberto duran, was going to do the same with hagler, and duran has gone 15 round with hagler, big mistake by hearns, he should had used his boxing skill in those early rounds, but both guys deserved all our respect for giving us this war of a fight
ONE OF THE GREATEST FIGHTS EVER!!!! THE PROBLEM TODAY IS THAT LITTLE BITCHES LIKE FAGGOT FLOYD, KLITCHCOS AND MANY OTHERS DONT WANT TO FIGHT LIKE THIS BECAUSE OF THE FEAR OF GETTING KO'ed. IF YOU ARE SCARED GET YOUR ASS OUT OF THE RING!
Out of all of Haglers opponents,Hagler says Hearns is the ONLY one that he has big time respect for.I have this on VHS,there's a part you don't see on this video where just before his post fight interview Hagler and Hearns come together and shake hands, Marvin says to Tommy "They got their moneys worth!"(talking about the fans) and Tommy replies "You got that right" It's a small moment between them where they're smilng at each other knowing that each brought out best in them in a great fight!
Hearns broke his right hand in the first round. Imagine this fight, had he not. Hagler was the most dominant inside fighter of his era, but how many of those classic overhand rights by Tommy could he have endured.....we'll never know.
Its beyond me how some people actually think that Pacquiao or Mayweather were greater than these two great champs. It's actually laughable if you think about it.
i just noticed how incompetent the referee is during thid fight. he doesn't move counter to the action, he moves with it. which is incorrect. he needs to stay out of the way of the fighters. he's lucky he didn't get hit.
he also starts the ten count at 5, five. he's a big time ref having a weird night. they aren't even holding and he keeps jumping in saying don't hold.
For those of you too young to remember. The build up and anticipation for this fight was the same as Pacquiao/Mayweather has been. Imagine that fight finally taking place and in the first round Mayweather and Pacquiao rail on each other like this. It would go down as the greatest round ever. Not gonna happen though cuz Mayweather won't engage like that.
@neneshubby it aint gonna happen idiot. floyd is a faggot who like hit and run and manny is too much of a counter puncher!! the days of boxing like this are over! if you want to see action similar to this you have to watch UFC!!!!! BOXING SUCKS THANKS TO FAGGOT FLOYD AND OTHERS!
@mystrol3 Your posts remind me of the words of Abraham Lincoln. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt" Or hit 'enter' in this case.
@MultiRocketman007 Don't put down The Hitman, Hagler couldn't make a great fight on his own. Takes two to tango and it takes an ATG badass to do what Hearns did regularly.
Kingdaleclarke go back to sleep you moron! Not many fights in 2011 compare to this stupid. These guys had a real fight not like the paper fights of today.
im still not convinced that this was just straight away considered the best and most exciting boxing match it was good yer but there are other fights today that are just as action packed, pacquiao v cotto, berto v ortiz, haye v harrison, mccloskey v prescott list goes on
@kingdaleclarke Punching for three straight rounds will render any fighter fatigued, plus both fighters were missing especially Hearns and when you throw a punch and miss it takes more energy then a punch that lands. These guys were world class champs you think they didn't train their asses off for this Mega fight?
@kingdaleclarke Did you start watching boxing yesterday? They were just brawling. Showing no skill. See them When there not brawling like tommy hearns and Sugar ray leonard in 1981 or marvin hagler vs sugar ray leonard
Steele was one of the best referees ever! You never saw him lose control of the fight or of a fighter. When you watch some of the fights that Tony Perez officiated, where he could've gotten one of the fighters killed, because he didn't get in there fast enough; as in Cooney vs Norton...or where he allowed a blatant foul to occur over and over; as in Ali vs Wepner, you begin to appreciate the attentiveness of Steele, all the more...
fightfannerd3 hearns had a good right hand, you make it sound like he was a ok puncher....hearns knocked out some great fighters, most notably DURAN. He had a pound for pound punch, and hagler just walked right through it. Ill admitt ok not a heavyweight punch but the guy had real power
It was that second right hand that put him down.Much like that second right hand that put down my welterweight hero 5 years earlier,Jose"Pipino"Cuevas!
This is what all sports are missing...EMOTION....both of these men HATED each other you can see it in their eyes they both wanted to destroy each other.....nowadays everyone is much too comfortable....thats fine but it makes for a less entertaining fight
i hope that comment below is not even trying to claim Mayweather would beat Hagler. Please tell me you didn't mean Hagler, because that would be ridiculous.
The 15th round of Norton-Holmes was better than Round 1 of Hagler-Hearns. It's easy to throw bombs when you're fresh. But that was the 15th round and they were beyond exhausted and they still threw bombs. Punches that would have killed mortals.
Best 3 rounds in boxing. PERIOD! Hagler was one of the few fighters who fought everyone. He never ducked a fighter.. His 'wars' with Vito Antuofermo were epic. Yet he was still disrespected by most of the boxing establishment. He didn't have the charisma of Leonard, or the controversy of Duran. He WILL go down as one of the best middle weights, and all around fighters in history.
hagler, hearns, duran, leonard, chavez these were brutal boxers and yes any of these guys could have taken on any of todays boxers and destroy them!!!
I saw this fight on closed circuit at the DC Convention ctr. The ONLY time viewers sat down was b4 the fight and between rounds. For my money it was the three most exciting rounds of boxing Ive ever seen! You could see Tommy Hearns glove wrinkle as he nailed Hagler on the head. When Marvelous did NOT go down.... oh man...
These guys were SWINGING FOR THE FENCES! Hearns has excellent movement and uses his reach well wit ha lightning jab and deceptive footwork. Hagler is an out and out beast.
@Mikeskates97 I think his cockyness got the best of him. The fact that hagler could take all his right hand, train-packed punches and still stand says a lot about his tenacity.
What happened to Tommy's legs in the second round? Could the few body punches in the first have so affected him? Could the relentless pressure of Hagler so drained him? From the beginning of the second Tommy wasn't able to get any leverage on his punches. Poor training?
Hagler is so compact and efficient in this fight. Hearns felt he had the weaponry to defeat anyone, but simply didn't know what to do when Hagler took his best punches and kept coming at him.
These men were warriors, plain and simple. You can tell when Tommy broke his hand though, he didn't throw it with his usual Cruisemissile-level power/accuracy for the rest of the fight.
I don't understand how people can compare fighters from different eras. Do you honestly they they would fight like that today? The sport evolves infinitely. Who knows how boxers will fight 50-60 years from now.
@MrCmurda526 The sport has not evolved - not boxing. It has peaked (from 20 - 30 years). Even Hagler and Hearns did not fight like that before or since. That is why this was a unique fight
I remember watching this fight with a girl named TARA, it was our first date she had never seen a boxing match before in her life and What a Show she got
It's funny how Michaels and Bernstein start off by pointing out strategies and calling the fight like any other. Then by midway thru the first they start screaming and yelling just like all the rest of us did that night.

I wish there was Hagler, Hearns, Duran and Leonard in this era

I remember watching this fight with a girl named TARA, it was our first date she had never seen a boxing match before in her life and What a Show she got

One of the few big fights that lived up to the hype and build up. Blood and Guts right there.
