Just wondering, in a previous video you state that you find the middle (widest part) of the hoof by going from the apex of the frog, and measuring 1 inch towards the heel. in this video you said to measure 3/4 inch. Does the whole size of the hoof determine this? or is it a general rule of thumb? just looking for clarification.
@MeganSaysRawr I messed up there, it's 1 inch. It's the tip of the coffin bone that's about 3/4th inch in front of the apex of the frog. I'll have to put a note on that, thanks for noticing.
@thehappyhoof Thanks. I really enjoy your videos and you've given me the confidence to pull the shoes, and have a barefoot hoof. My horse was much sounder, and happier barefoot. Hopefully I can gain the confidence to trim his hooves myself, I'm just finding it tough to find a barefoot trimmer in my area willing to help me.
I hope everyone watching this video knows that you just cant measure how long you want the hell and go and lop it off. The sole and frog of the hoof is the deciding factor, and with tell you where everything else wants to be. Who decided that 1 1/4 inch the the golden heel length?
Please read Pete Ramey's articles on the hoof. Candace will benefit from them most of all!
@cabagewhite Yeah, I hope the same thing. And yes Candace and everyone else would benefit from reading Pete Ramey's articles. Don't want to take down the heel if you are not prepared to get the toes and rest of the foot balanced with it. However there's only so much you can put in a 15 minute video.
@cabagewhite Thought you should know, I took heed to your warning and I put warning notes on both videos, that a person should not just run out and lop the heels off their horses without first learning about the whole foot etc.
I am not trying to "judge" you I am telling you like it is. Please for the horse's sake! Study and learn more about horses. Again I do not know you and am not trying to "hurt your feelings". If you want to learn more and become a better horsewoman. Then search youtube for username: horseawarness
You will become a great horsewoman. Trust me! Good Luck!
i want to know who the person was that ABUSED this horse to where it got this bad. If you can not afford a horse then you can not own one. That simple. Don't let your ego get in the way of seeing the truth. Something should have been done about this a long time ago. I hope that a previous owner did this to this horse and not you because you seem very nice.
@jupitarlove Are you shure your commenting on the right video? The horse in this video is not abused at all. Are you sure you did not mean to comment on the Tragedy of Laminitis Video?
The topic is very good and the verbal explanation is great - but I found the video itself was difficult to follow. Lots of shaking and at some points, the area being talked about was not being videoed and was not visable (for example, when measuring the heal) which I found disappointing. However, in general, another informative and interesting video - thanks!
@lauralbriar I know, that's why I almost didn't post it, but I pretty much did it for Candace since she lives far away. And I'm hoping she will remember enough. Shaky yes, I'm getting old, and it was hard to instruct and hold the camera. Soon I will be posting specific instuctional videos, that will make it very clear on how to deal with the whole hoof.
@SighMyLifeWithHorses Thanks Dear, I will be posting the rest later. I had to add an annotation, a WARNING, that you should not attempt to lower the heels like this until you also know exactly how to bring back the toe at the same time. Since I've learned some pretty precise measurements in this, it has changed my trimming, and REALLY MADE MY HORSES HOOVES CHANGE DRAMATICALLY IN A SHORT TIME. And I really am "happy" about it, and will share it all soon. Make it more simple also for everyone.
