  • hasit any connection to the shahname opera planed by strauss?

  • it's really great that Johann Strauss composed a song for Iranians

  • actually i don't think he composed it FOR the Iranians... several European composers that lived in the 19th century composed pieces with an Asian theme

  • ya, but but the title's stating "Persian march" thus, saying Iranian

  • I left a comment to another patron. Let me put it this way, it's idiotic to take pride in something that someone else did. Does that make sense?

The title just refers to potential similarities, or perhaps what inspired the composer. As such he has Egyptian, Russian, and Spanish marches. We Iranians seem to suffer from a deep inferiority/superiority complex. Anyways, Persian march doesn't have anything to do with Iranians. Just a reference to music. Now please don't tell me that makes you proud?

  • many Europeans had and still have a passion for exotic non-European cultures and civilizations, but as you say, maybe it's just the fascination of diversity that inspired some composers to give their music oriental influences.

  • Many composers were wishing for adopted anthems

  • ok i'm somewhat lost in the begining facts, but i know that Persia = Iran, that's the bottom line, and if it's Persian then it is talking to me.

And i don't see how it is illogical to take pride in someone elses work, can you explain

  • If this was a joke, you're funny.

  • what is a joke?

  • Persia[IRAN] FOREVER!

  • OMG! I am so sick of this national pride nonsense.

The piece is called Persian march supposedly to acknowledge certain influence from Persian music. Does it give you a sense of pride? Jesus!

Not only we (Persians) seem to take pride in what whomever who lived in Iran centuries ago, but also we seem to take pride in something done by a European!

  • Yea!

  • It was composed to welcome Nāser al-Dīn Schah in Vienna in 1878. That's why it's called "Persian march" nowadays, it was composed as Persian national anthem in it's time.

  • Actually Naser al-Din Shah's first visit in Europe was in1873 and Strauss II composed and premiered the march in 1864.

Maybe it was also performed when the Shah visited Vienna, but I don't think Strauss planned it that far ahead

  • 1873,you're right. Checked two sources that it was composed as National Anthem, though.
