For use of thermite in cutting steel, see my video "Incendiary Experiments".
The mythbusters guys set off 1000 pounds of thermite to try to cut a car in half, and explosives experts at New Mexico Tech try to cut a column and a beam, and a Florida Engineer, Jonathan Cole, cuts columns, beams, bolt heads, and bolts.
Aluminum powder aint that hard to make. Just get some aluminum plumbing, shave it down with a grinder with a container in the position that the slag is gonna fly off of. The resulting powder in the container needs to be ground in a mortar and pestle,( ideally, yet the back of a spoon against another metal surface will suffice) and voilah! Aluminum powder. Rust is ez 2. Cut the two wires from a dc inverter then put em in a jar of water with an iron nail wrapped in the + side.
I bought some red iron oxide from a cheramics store. It's hard to get aluminum powder. I'm going to try to melt the aluminum and then mix it with the rust.
I bought some red iron oxide from a cheramics store. About 15€ 2,5 kg. It's hard to get aluminum powder though. I was thinking of maybe melting the aluminum and then mix it with the rust.
i plan on doing this, i got the aluminum from etch a sketch and im gunna get the ferric oxide from handwarmers (not sure if it really is iron oxide) or the ferric oxide on the beach. are those ok to use? also, can u light the magnesium ribbon with a lighter or do u need a torch?
Not sure what you're talking about with regards to the handwarmers' iron oxide or even the ferric oxide on the beach??? all you need is rust! that's iron oxide! and no i don't think a lighter will get hot enough to ignite magnesium ribbon, you'll have to use a blowtorch.
Yeah maybe but it's far easier to get the iron oxide from an old rusty car or caravan/trailer chassis, you need to find a piece of iron that is really rusty so the rust flakes off, then crush this into a fine powder and dry it. Then mix it 50% with alu powder and you have a thermite mixture!

Use silver oxide instead of iron oxide.
The heat of reaction is twice.
Compare standard enthalpy change of formation between AgO and Fe2O3.
Calculate weight ratio by yourself.

You can buy aluminium and iron oxide from artist shops. Artist use them to add tone to paint and shizzle. Pyromania forever!! Aha

Hey good video but it looks better if you do it indoors in a dark room.

He propably means that you can collect iron oxide with a magnet from sand. I don't know about the handwarmers though.
