BMW getting unreliable nowadays, living off past glory when they made class cars ( 20+ years ago ).

If you want to buy a car for its finish, then Audi walk all over BMW !!!

I ran a E36 M3 EVO for five years before my Focus ST & it's a good job i kept extending the M3's warranty - Vanos issues, electrical faults etc etc etc & the FORD has not had a problem in 4 years of ownership :)

I also know quite a few people who own/ have owned problematic beemers :(

The only people who have problems with BMW's (or any other car) are those who dont deserve to have a car in the first place. A moron will break a Rolls Royce in 2 months... and no, Audi doesnt walk over BMW in anything..fit and finish is about the same, bmw has better materials inside.

@kay19833 bear in mind that the 335i is twice the price, which makes that about as good a comparison as one between the 335i and a Nissan GT-R. Twice the price, cheaper one is slower. See the pattern? £20k buys you a high spec ST. Walk into a BMW garage with that and you'll end up with a base 116i. Not even a 118. So the point of the ST is to give power, reliability, fun and comfort to people you have the sense not to spend a large amount of money on what is, at the end of the day, only a badge.

The R32 is an amazing car and in my opinion better than the ST by miles but it does need a turbo charger to really do the buisness. You can squeeze nearly 300bhp and 400nm of torque out of the ST with with just software. The R32 is not only heavier than the ST but a good 100nm down on that figure.

Great cars, i had an Electric Orange ST-3back in '06. Completely standard which was fine with me as it had a lovely 5 pot growl. The performance was certainly adequate for our roads.

Sold it last year and bought a TVR.

i own a silver focus st and its bloody quick, it kept up easily with my bosses mitsubishi evo 9 which has 35 bhp more and which youd expect it to be faster!

it does, but not on the rally track :) 4x4 with active lsd ... cant be beaten even by the gorgeous ST. Evos are very quick if you know to handle them. max speed on the highway is not much higher than of the ST, but Evo aint GT car ;) "Even in the curve with gas" is the slogan there :)

I have an ST-2 but the Evo is the car I really want, but being 21 and previously convicted for speeding achieving 6 points and a revoked license my insurance company are much more comfortable with me seated in a Hot Hatch than a Coupe/Roadster/Rally car. Anyway though I know the ST is quick, especially when your on a flat surface, I'm pretty certain the highest spec Evo is 0-62 in about 3.8 seconds so I reckon your boss must have been in a GSR or just not thrashing his IX

Mate... I test drove the new Type R and the latest S2k and as much as I adore VTEC my issue with both of em was that they feel dead... There isn't depth to those cars, fair enough the way they scream up to 9000 rpm is reason enough to buy em but trust me thats all your getting, a fantastic engine without much soul. I got an ST instead which was much cheaper 2nd hand(9 months old) and though I'll bet its a lot more juicy on the fuel it still feels a lot safer to drive fast which is very important

the 2.4L Lancer has no chance,only the Evo. in driving style they are very different. The ST is ment to be a powerful family hothatch (this is why it comes with 5 doors too). Evo is Mitsubishi's Top powered model. ST is not. That would be the RS. the Focus I RS is only a FWD but it keeps up with most 4x4. the Focus II RS is yet to come 4x4 and 300HP. So ... just wait for the 2008/2009 Btw I am a great Evo fan, but the normal lancer aint sh*t ...
