I just got my first set of pipes yesterday. I got a set of Cushing GHB-2's in Delrin and even though I don't know how to play and have had my practice chanter for almost a year, I envision myself as an accomplished player. As a former hockey-skating instructor I know full well the basic principals needed to accomplish any new task and look forward with great anticipation to bellowing out my first, real song on my new pipes. Thanks for posting your vids and helping me along on this new journey.
well i have some bag pipes and I have no clue where they came from but they are way smaller than those and mostly wood and plastic... im pretty sure they are crap but i can get noise out of them and it's not too bad
@countnickoli No Irish people dont wear kilts. I am 100 percent Irish, and i play the bagpipes. I dont think it really matters. If you Scotch- Irish i would guess you would wear a kilt, but not sure. I dont wear a kilt. Both of my parents were born in Dublin to, but bagpipes dont matter.. It not like if your not scottish you cant play the bagpipes
@brooklynNY9999 Yes the irish wear kilts, the kilt exists in irish culture (mainly northern ireland) but not as we see scottish kilts. Irish kilts do not have tartan patterns to specify your clan or familial background. For the most part, they are very simple with only a few colors
with a new bag, new chanter and new reeds you could have a decently playable set, but...the drones aren't really worth it, so you're much better off buying a set of McCallum poly pipes for 600, 700$ or just saving up for a while - joining a band and borrowing a set of pipes is also a great way to do it - I borrowed a set of old naill 3s for about a year until I could afford a new set of McCallum AB4s
The best thing to do is join a pipe band because most of them will give you a free set of bagpipes. I am in a pipe band in northern ireland and i have a set of Warmac pipes
@countnickoli Aye, not so much tartan more of a solid colour if they did have plaid it would be a little less intricate than Scottish tartan.
the traditional irish kilt isn't actually a kilt but a long tunic called a Lein-croich and the usual colours are Black, tan/saffron and a dark green but now kilts are worn in these colours.
@countnickoli Some Irish people do wear kilts. For instance The Royal Irish Regiment, formerly Royal Irish Rangers wear Saffron Kilts, a kind of orange colour. Linked I think to William of Orange. But don't quote me on it.
chanters are absolute rubbish...in every way you can imagine, the bags are most often hard leather (though many are actually air tight) the wood is low quality rosewood which has poor sound capabilities as well as longevity and is prone to cracking. The drone bores are not finely smoothed and are quite rough on the inside though the drones usually look decent on the outside -
He said 9k for his set, but if you listen to him he said that a good set can be had for $1200-$1500. His cost more than that because of the flashy silver bits on the outside which make no difference to the sound. So a top quality sound can be heard from a well set-up set of pipes for around $1500. Like nathan9207 says, hoin a band and ge tthe benefit of free or cheap bagpipes, and the proper advice so you're not wasting your hard earned...
True. Never buy bagpipes from pakistan like the rosewood bagpipes. They can break really easy, they reeds does not sound good, and it is hard to get use to those kind of bagpipes.
you guys can buy quality pipes for cheaper than that. alot of inexperianced people will say different but look up dunbar bagpipes they make a set called p1 made of delrin and are made by great pipe makers i have a set and i was blown away. i take them camping and stuff like that. they are pushing the sound quality of my vintage grainger campbells but ya dont buy pakistani. p1 are going for 8-900 now i bought them when they where going for 500
I'm looking into a set of P1's....with Crozier reeds and Canmore bag I can get a complete set shipped for about $800 in Canada....do you like your set....are there any fallbacks or problems you've had?
Several of my band mates have P3's (same material and internal dimensions as the P1, just some more decoration on the outside). The sound, just like wooden Dunbars, is very Henderson-like. Not quite as refined as wooden pipes, but a very solid pipe and definitely more durable than wood.
Ya, I have McCallums and they are wonders, but i also bought a Pakistan pipe to see, lol oh god, the drones and everything are fine, the blowpipe is a lil leaky, but that problem was soon solved, and just the reeds and the bag were horrible, the leather bag they use is useless, luckily the money I spent on them is a long way from the heart, but my McCallums are perfect, so I am confirming that Pakistan pipes need ALOT of work, anyway cheers everyone.
I have a set of Mcdeura, pipes. I started lessons with a grade 1 piper and he checked them and I have probably the only functioning set of pakistani pipes that work.
LOL Pakistan.

Unless you just want to fool around with them and see if you like them (and try to annoy your wife :). Then get the ones from pakistan.

And don't forget you can get quality used sets as well...a member of my pipe band bought a barely used set of Sheppards for $500.

You don't HAVE to buy Pakistan pipes if your low on money. Just save up and get a quality set.

you might as well save the 200$ you'd pay for pakistani pipes to a good playable set
