heck thats one of the newer hueys, its a uh-1h,can tell by the little cargo door that swings out,the uh-1d had two window side slide door and was used to hall troops ,and thwe uh-1 a and b had one window slide door and was used more for a gun ship
The Hellhole is a small passenger area directly behind the right seat pilot, named such becuase the exteme close proximity of the fuel tank and external bladder.
@n3kex Sorry to tell you this, but that's not correct. The hellhole is directly under the transmission where the cargo hook is mounted when installed and where you can access the bottom of the transmission. It was called the hellhole because is always ends up being the place where grease and fluids collect. The hellhole seats are the rear most seats in the cabin with your back to the transmission. 67N20 Huey crewchief.
Thanks for posting! I'm reading Robert Mason's "Chickenhawk" and it's giving me a lot to think about. In the book he mentions the 'Hellhole' on top of the Huey. I don't know what this is. Can someone put me wise? Thanks.
Um, no, its not in production anymore. Still in use in other countries, and in our Marine Corps, but sadly, she has been retired and replaced by the Blackhawk.
The "Hog", made since something like 1957. Still in production today and serving many countries in many capacities. The first with turbine power. Amazing design and performance keeps it as one of the best today. Any vets from the "Air Cav" my salute to you.
A great piece, brought a tear or two to my eyes. I spent 14 years working on these great birds as a mechanic and crew chief. There truly is no comparable sound.....music to my ears.
Wonderful. I'm a vet, but not of Vietnam. I came into the service just as the Huey was being phased out - but I did ride in them and prefer them over the Blackhawk. if you haven't seen it yet, try to catch In the Shadow of the Blade. Very moving. The reactions of the Vets are a sight to see.
Got chills watching that clip...Fred Alvis and I go back 35 years. What is really sad is that the VA doesn't think that the job those guys did was dangerous and stressful enough to merit any consideration toward PTSD compensation. Maybe they should see this video and go ask the family of those 35 guys whose name is on the side of that Huey just how dangerous their job really was.
Almost made me choke up. Been a long time since I touched my sweet, fat baby. Army 67n10 (mechanic/crew chief) on UH-1H and 1D. I miss the way they look, sound and smell. Kinda uncomfortable on the butt though! :) They did a beautifil thing with a beautiful helicopter. Should have my Airframe & Powerplant ratings in august '08....Maybe I'll see if I can part one back together.
Any online communities for huey mechanics/enthusiast's????????
GOOD SHOW I live on the Flight path of the hueys from Ft Benning GA so I always saw them over my neighborhood as a child. even a cobra or two from the Marines
I'm 22, live in Long Beach Ca about 2 miles from the Los Alamitos Air Base and I used to see hueys fly there all the time as a kid. And yes you can hear them from miles away. They would fly in a straight line and what a sight that was.
A fitting memorial & a great story. I have watched this video a number of times and I can only imagine what the sound of those rotor blades means to vetrans. Us Brits did a good job with this one!
Have always loved aviation and the military. Being 33 now, married, kid..its too late now to join. But in seeing this vid I have to say you are first rate. To do what you did for those guys shows alot of class and respect for those who served and flew that beautiful bird. Absolutely FIRST RATE!
I recently looked at the other huey clip and commented there, and since then, i found the info on the u.s tour that was about a restored huey...i couldn't remember at first, but found em on google. the project was call In The Shadow of The Blade...i saw it quite some time ago on one of the cable networks.
If you love the huey, check out what they did for us vets!
I learned to fly the Huey at Fort Rucker in 1987. The sound still gets me. I can't imagine what it was like to fly it in combat. 1. burnin' 2. turnin' 3 to green...
amazing clip and tribute to the huey and war vets ..........shame about the hissin , kind of ruined the moment .
