On yeah! Show then how to do it Grover! You had to be the best to have worked with Jerome Robbins! I've been a West Side Story (almost obessed) fan since 1961; didn't make it to the Wintergarten in '57, but I have both versions of the album. Love to see/hear anything related to WSS. WONDERFUL dancing!
I've got chills! I am a huge West Side Story fan; did a local teen summer stock years ago! I wasn't able to see the original Broadway production with Carol and Grover; and Chita Rivera, Tony Mordente (her hubby), David Winters! However, I had the album and I know the differences between stage and movie. I follow whenever/wherever I can. I would LOVE to see the new poster!
Well, this is heaven for all of us Grover fans and Carol fans and Grover & Carol and Carol & Grover fans. Way back in the "West Side Story" days, when I was in my early 20s, I often thought "These talents will never grow old." And, as we all can see here, I was oh so right!
Wayne...you might get a kick out of photo that was sent to me today on my Facebook page. It's a replica of the original 1957 West Side Story poster showing Carol and Larry Kert running down the block. As a present to the cast of the revival, Carol and I redid it. I subbed for the wonderful and much missed Larry Kert. Check it out.
I just watched the "He's my friend" number on TCM. I love that number because of the musical arrangement and Grover Dale. Can't take my eyes off him in any scene he's in. Just like Wayne Cilento in "Big Deal". I look forward to "Half a Sixpence" for the pleasure of watching Dale.
My hubby's former Fosse dancer David Gold and I appreciate dancers so much that I run here to YouTube to watch the greats!
This is a wonderful clip...I too remember, you, Grover, from the Unsinkable..and wondered what ever happened to you..can you give me a short update...also Debbie Reynolds appeared here a couple years ago and put on a fantastic show...thanks for your memories
Perfection from two perfect performers. Did you choreograph it? I know it's the whole point of the telethon, but how I wish the phone number was not over your feet! Thanks for posting it, it was a joy to see!
If I'm ever asked if there's a defining moment for me as a dancer, it's "Molly Brown." When I walked onto the set of the "He's My Friend" sequence, I realized for the first time that the skinny tap dancing kid was no longer in McKeesport, PA. He was in Hollywood about to appear in an MGM musical. If ever there was a time to "go for it" this was it. The skinny kid went for it.
That's for sure! You and Debbie and Gus Trikonis are a marvel in that number. It's my favorite dance number from any Hollywood musical. I even feature it on my Youtube site!
Thanks for the encouragement. What do you don't see on the vid is the drama that happened backstage seconds before we went on. We were told we were "bumped" from the line up..and were virtually on our way out the door...when they said "You're going on NOW!"
Fabulous!! Wonderful!!! Made me so happy!!!!

Choreographed it? Yep, I did. Carol and I performed it on cruiseships for a year or so. Nice way to pay for a cabin, right?
groverd 3 years ago
Lol! Yes, a wondeful way to pay for a cabin. Great to see you. I've been a fan since I saw you in "Half A Sixpence" on Broadway!
johnm001 3 years ago
Actually, I should say since I saw you in "The Unsinkable Molly Brown", which I saw before the show in New York.
