You mention you don't really know names and harmonic context degrees while you play in another thread. I find this very intriguing becuase you play very smooth ,and I have been recenlty trying hard to recite the chords and notes while I play becuase this is what my teacher is telling me to. However my playing is suffering becuase of that and my head hurts now. Is there another technique i'm not aware of to use when improvising??? please let me know.
I think your teacher is right... and I am too. You teacher will learn you the basics of Jazz. It's important as when I begun alone, it was much longer than if I had learned with a teacher. Nevertheless, as soon as you think you've got some good skill, try to get more independence. Play some songs you really love, without reading a score, and without any help. Just with your ears, your head and your fingers. That's how you'll get your own style.
thanks. So when you improvise are you thinking or visualizing (say of the next chord tones coming up in a progression) or are you simply "feeling" in the moment?
When I improvise, It's a feeling of the notes I play. Of course, when you play a song many times, you know after many rehearsals where to put (and not put) your fingers on the neck.

@Hycker123
On this Video, the instrumental background is our own production. I think you can find free midifiles on the Ronny Jordan version on the internet.
