you have to be booted in osx for this too work? like lets say you took the HDD out of the imac would you still be able to use it as a monitor or would you have to have the os booted?
Would this work for a pc? Currently have a fairly decent gaming pc hooked up to a 42inch HDTV, about to go buy a 27" iMac, want to know if I can then hook the pc up and use the iMac as a display for my pc?
@Sytrusze Yes it does work, because im doin it with a windows machine right now. make sure you got a amd hd 6000 series those have mini display native.
@hackingtime88 I suppose he might use the iMac has his main workstation. It's got a huge hard drive and much better ram, as compared to the MacBook. I've been thinking about doing the same. But iMacs are pricey for a student. =P
@hackingtime88 the idea being that you have an imac as your desktop system, you have a macbook as you mobile system. you suddenly have a need to run a second monitor to your macbook and boom, the imac can do that for you.
its what we call a "feature". not something you buy the hardware for, but is an added bonus.
i bet u could get it cheaper at amazon this is one of the only reason i wouldn't buy a mac cause its a very expensive product and so are its accessories
nope. apple has 20" and 24" led displays but they haven´t been updated to the 21.5" and 27" displays that the imacs have right now. so you might buy a 27" imac and use it just as a display but what would be the point?
Does the iMac have to be turned on to use this feature? Since the new Thunderbolt can power a Thunderbolt/Cinema display nowadays?

will this work with a 21.5 inch imac???

Does it work the other way around?
Macbook would make a nice "instrument Panel" for Xplanes.

I dont mean this to be an insult in any way, but you really sound like john kramer from the Saw films

Wow! $1700 for a 27" fully working computer, but is just used as a monitor! I so want one! Instead of spending only $400 max on a different one.

Question: does the 27inch imac completely shutdown or only the dislay?
killer397 1 year ago
@killer397 only the display. With apple key board you can switch back and forth between the two. Command + Fn +F2

@hackingtime88 I agree with you... But the display is 899 would you go ahead and get the 21.5 inch for 1199?

$30 is too much money for a cable unless it is like 30 feet long. Is it possible to buy an iMac 27" just as a display and not as a computer?
appletree0124 2 years ago
a lot of cables these days cost that much..
