And btw this series is made to be enjoyed in pieces.
A successful adaption should take it's time and milk the mystery, suspense and (ultimately) horror aspects for what their worth - rather than rush in and try to do everything all at one once.
A 5 hour miniseries is really the only thing that makes sense.
There is so much deep, riveting content in the graphic novel - 5 hours is really the minimum amount of time you'd need to even come close to doing this series the kind of justice that it deserves.
Anything less will inevitably be what Alan Moore refers to as "butchered children."
Hmmm, this could be cool if they do the movie correctly, and do justice to the source material. I agree though, the black freighter segments might not translate too well. If they get Rorscach correct and keep the ending then...maybe it will be good.
Yet it would´nt b a Snyder fault anyway, I also think it´s impossible for Warner to not touch the ending w 9/11. All others thinking Watchmen will be a disaster, please sign below
I haven't, If Gibbons really honestly feels that the script really follows the graphic novel and does it full justice,
I'll have to give him the benefit of a doubt,
You'll forgive me if I check up on that,
That doesn't mean I would agree with him however, You would have to put alot of nuances into the film establishing all of the characters from the ground up, Work in things like all of the different news clippings etc.
I would think you would need at least a three part movie ala LOTR to really even try to get everything from the graphic novel into the film or to even get all that in a DVD set,
IMHO it can't be done, I will admit however that Tolkin fans said the same thing about the LOTR saga before Peter Jackson got hold of it, Although I regard Watchmen as a far more complex work than LOTR,
Moore himself of course has had some bad blood with DC comics mainly because he regards
DC as having stolen Watchmen from him and having farmed it out to Warner Brothers,
Plus he has a low regard for film as an artistic medium compared to sequential art anyways, Maybe I'll be completely wrong about this and Watchmen will actually be an outstanding film as opposed to V For Vendetta,
Of course me being a complete cynic I really could say a little something about the fact that Dave will be earning a fair chunk of money from this film seeing as how Moore doesn't want any money from it, And it's probably not in Dave's best interest to out and out tear into this film.
Because I don't think there's anyway that Snyder and Warner Brothers will touch the 9/11
apocalyptic type of ending with most everyone in New York dead with bodies all over the city and no happy ending, And because IMHO there is no way to translate somethings like The Black Freighter bit, Dr Manhattan's perception of time and reality his flashbacks of the past and the future.
Plus there's been talk that Snyder is planning to change the ending of Watchmen with Dan shooting Veidt at the end which if that comes about will turn this film into something beneath contempt.
Plus I have a hard time imagining them not trying to water down Rorschach in some way
from the Travis Bickle style psychopath in a costume that you get in Moore's story.
And last because I don't think Warner Brothers will leave in the ending that works so perfectly in Moore's story hinging on wheither or not Seymore will pick up Rorschach's journal and restarts
Hmm. Well from what I've been seeing on other sites and even the Watchmen Movie site that went up a few weeks ago, they're not gonna put the Black Freighter in the theatrical release, only on the dvd. And apparently, they are going to keep the same ending and there has been no mention from anyone working on the film that Rorscarch will be changed at all; Synder was even talking about how Bickle is the basis for his Rorscharch.
I saw a bit of 300 but I honestly wasn't impressed by the film, I don't myself consider it up there with some of
Frank Millers best work and myself I would never rank 300 up there with Watchmen,
Watchmen is a far more important work of art
IMHO. Besides not every comic will work as a film, I don't think a film version of Maus or Acme Novelty Library would work anymore than a Watchmen film myself.
They say they do. And I wasnt comparing the two as works of the genre, just that the same technology is being used on both films. And Dave Gibbons was talking about how he read the script and how they didnt change anything for the film, minus the black freighter only being on the dvd as a bonus feature. Google some of Snyder and co.'s interviews about the film, the address all or most of the questions and concerns you have.
IMHO Watchmen the comicbook has things that could only work in a comicbook and not a film,
I may sound cynical but hollywood has had a really lousy track record when it comes to doing adaptations of Moore's comics and characters, Terry Gilliam himself concluded that it would be impossible to do a film adaptation of Watchmen that could possibly do any justice to Moore's work and I have a higher regard for Gilliam as a director than
lets just hope that watchmen wont be another constantine, but the trailer does look pretty sweet :P

Not putting a dime into this movie.

Based on the recent panel, I would say the same thing.

If you are planning to see any movie for a dime, you'd be disappointed.
So I'll put my 10 bucks in myself...

Zack Snyder has said at the moment the running time will be about 3 hours. Also he said it will be rated r.
I think with that in mind it will be good enough.
A 5 hour min series would be shocking and completely unnecessary.

I bet that it is not going to be 3 hours!!!!

I'll probably check to see what Dave Gibbons has actually said about this film,
It should be interesting.

As far as the Doc Manhattan scenarios, Im sure green screens will do just fine. I mean, despite it kinda sucking, 300 looked pretty cool.
HotFuzzMel 4 years ago
So will they be putting a happy ending in it?
The Black Freighter segment would have to be seguied back and forth nonstop in the film,
That works perfectly in the comic in film it won't translate anymore than Dr Manhattans POV
What works in a comic usually will just not come across in film.
cha5 4 years ago
300 is not Watchmen,Comparing both comics is like comparing apples and oranges Will they try to put in
the fact that Dr Manhattan is for all intents and purposes God? Dr Manhattan's POV is not something that would just come across on film,
His thoughts on Laurie humanity his past wife.
It's not as simple as just a blue screen.

Sorry let me rephrase that first question,
They are going to have New York wiped out in a disaster that makes 9/11 look tame,
Have Rorscach killed by Dr Manhattan
and have Veidt plans to save the world come to pass, Dan and Laurie in tears making love and Seymore just about to pick up Rorschach's Journal?
I really don't think Warner Brothers has the balls to do an ending like that,
But I could be wrong.
cha5 4 years ago

Sheesh! Comics and film are incompatable as artforms
for the most part, Every attempt to do a film adaptation of Moore's comics or characters has been a complete and total fuckup,
IMHO this film isn't going to be any different.
cha5 4 years ago
This guy's a fucking idiot.
I hope Moore isn't suicidal.
