Why is that a big ten ref (Jim Kimerling?) in the Rose Bowl? Was this before the practice of assigning a crew that is not from either team's conference?

@thrax982 Plenty of familiar faces on the sidelines. Lloyd Carr, Gary Moeller, Jim Herrman. Slick Rick Neuheisel on the UCLA coaching staff. Barry Alvarez on the ND coaching staff. (This was the year before he left to coach Wisconsin. Lloyd Carr was offered the coaching job first but turned it down because he didn't want to leave Ann Arbor.)
USC's coach Larry Smith was a former assistant under Bo.

The 89 team was one of Bo's best. Had Michigan beaten ND that year, Bo may have finished his final season with Michigan with a National Championship. But it just wasn't ment to be. Bo never winning a "mythical" NC may be the lone black mark on his resume, but considering that pre BCS, all National Champions were basically voted for, not having "won" one doesn't look as bad. The fact that when Bo retired he was top 10 all time wins should tell you everything you need to know.

Bo's right. Until there is a true playoff system, the National Championship will always be "mythical" to some extent. People have bashed Hoke because he refuses to say the goal year in and year out is the NC and instead says the Big 10 Championship is their goal. But Bo right here explains it well. The B10 Title should be the first objective...if you can't win your conferencve, you don't have a chance at competing for a NC.
