I used to agree with that. On reflection though, I think it deserved to win. Private Ryan was an awesome 30 mins, which was followed by a couple of hours of drivel punctuated by some amazing combat scenes and great tension. It's still a great movie, but I think SIL is a better movie.

Hanks and Spielberg have twice (to my knowledge) teamed up on a movie that was followed by an HBO series. In both cases I thought the series was better (Band of Brothers and From the Earth to the Moon).

Shakespeare was a nice movie, but to me SVP was much superior.

Sure the action was great, but I found the characters and the acting to be top notch as well. To me, you could find a movie similar to Shakespeare pretty much every year. But since SVP, has there been a movie that has come close to equalling what SVP achieved? Nope.

Even over a decade later, SVP is still looked upon as a landmark film and is never forgotten, while with SIL how often do people speak of it? Hardly ever.
