If his death was self inflicted , murder or an accident of his own doing as a substance abuser I can honestly say if he could take back all he did to be at peace with himself he would have. There are know and unknown reasons people abuse narcotics & Alchohol. But the biggest question is how does humanity and the abuser figure out how to stop . It is too late for Chris and a lot of others but more resources should be used to end the chemical abuse cycle.
I just read Three Strides Before The Wire, had not known anything about horse racing prior to that. Wonderful book about a wonderful person. I cannot turn off HRTV now, looking for a race reply with Chris riding. This is a touching tribute, thank you.
Thanks for posting this video. Chris Antley was by far my favorite jockey of all time. An amazing person, with a huge heart. If anyone reads this post please read the book Three Strides Before the Wire, possibly the greatest horse racing book of all time. There really should be a movie made about Chris and his legacy.
Thank you for posting this . There should be more people out there wwith compassion such as yours towards the fallen heroes of the sport . I knew Chris up in Ny. when he was ridding , and he had a little darkness that he had to be enlightened on . damn good rider ..............
It's a long time since I had a thought for Chris, but as I sat writing a letter to little friend, I thought about how the death of Chris changed her life forever and how very sad that their relationship was so overpowered by the demons drug use brings. What a truly mesmorising man he was - he certainly left a print on people's hearts! When will the movie be made????
I lived near Monmouth Park where Antley was such a dominant rider before switching his tack to NY. Whether his death was self-induced or not it is still a shame that he died at the age of 34.
I remember so clearly the day Charismatic broke down in '99 (correct me if I'm wrong) and I was a big Chris Antley fan as well. I got a calendar the same year of horse racing pictures and I was so excited to see Chris and Charismatic on my birthday month of May. Very nice tribute, he is missed.
No Chris will NOT be forgotten! He was a great Rider yes but he was a Better Friend! You are missed deeply my friend. As I watched this footage all I could do is cry. Some happy tears some sad.
One of my dearest friends I have ever had....I still cant believe you are not here....but you will always be in my heart. You were a talent on the track,an artist at home a humble class act ,funny as all hell....generous...fun and one hell of a partner for dancing & shoting tequila....I am so happy to have such wonderful memories of you...Rest In Peace brother.
I grew up on the race track and Chris was one of my very best friends, and the first person I called if I needed to talk, get advise from, or lend a hand. He was the big brother I never had. I had the great honor to ride races with him on a few occasions. To this day Im still devastated at his loss.
I knew Chris and his family, I now live in Louisville and just starting to realize how important he was to the track and world. He never let on to me how famous he was, or have any airs about himself. To me, out of all his accomplishment , thats a true Champion! You are missed.
What are you on? If he was slaughtered he's the only dead horse breeding as he's listed as having a 2009 stud fee! Chris DID save his life from a catastrophic breakdown. Charismatic is breeding in Japan, reportedly very much ALIVE.
@hcyvonne1 As of Jan. 2011, Charismatic and War Emblem are reported to still be standing at stud on a Japanese farm. "Old Friends," the organization formed after Ferdinand's horrible end came to light, has been keeping up with the horses' status and been in communication with the farm. They are both scheduled to be returned to the States when their breeding careers are over, and will be retired to Old Friends where they will live out their remaining days in peace, surrounded by loving care.
What a lovely tribute! I knew Chris, he was a great guy and good friend. He even rode our ten K claimer at Santa Anita. I miss him, his emails, and his talent. Your tribute is beautiful.
A beautiful tribute...my very favorite jockey and among my greatest inspirations...not just talented -- divinely talented...was honored to meet him once in the late 80's at Saratoga...so kind, humble, and generous of spirit...were it not for his mental illness, he'd have shattered every riding record in the books...his story is one of the most moving in modern sports
ohh honey... You must be new to racing then. All racing fans have heard of the ANT MAN. Look into it, and the story, it is very touching and heartbreaking. I loved the two of them so much.
@pintogal82 Thanks for such a beautiful tribute. I'm sure Chris would ave loved it too. He rode many winners for me as an apprentice jockey at monmouth park in New Jersey. Years later, he saw me sitting on a bench outside a barn. He walked right up to me and asked about a horse he won on three times. He told me the horse was one of his favorites. The fact he remembered me, and that horse's name just blew me away...but that was Chris..my favorite jockey and person, and friend...
Thanks soooo much for this video... Chris Antley is my favorite jockey ever. Him and Charismatic burned up the track! Rest in peace Antley... We will never forget you!!
He was so handsome. The only time I ever went to the stakes, was to see those two ride out through the tunnel.I was there, and they were GLOWING.After that,I came to find out what a dirty business racing is, for the horses esp, as they have no choice, but also for the jocks. Rest in peace, Gorgeous Antman. You DID INDEED save your friends life that day!!!And though those thoroughbreds are just a commodity to the ones who run them -- YOU REALLY DID SEE HIM AS A FRIEND, and not just a ride.
Chris Antley life story would make a great movie..It has everything that a movie needs to be great...The battle to be successful, the downfalls of success, battle back to get back to the winner circle, fall in love and then the tragic end!
If his death was self inflicted , murder or an accident of his own doing as a substance abuser I can honestly say if he could take back all he did to be at peace with himself he would have. The only good jockey is one in a coffin! To exploit horses for financial gain, as well as entertainment, is a social evil!

Wonderful vid, though I'd say the the best tribute to his memory is that Charismatic is still alive and well because of what Chris did at the Belmont

He didn't save his horse by shipping it to a japanese slaughter house, where he got brutaly slaughtered and eaten! :'(

@hcyvonne1 It was Ferdinand, a Kentucky Derby winner, who was impotent at stud in Japan and slaughtered for dog food.
