OMG i listened 2 this song sooo much that i wanted 2 learn it from my teacher so i finnally did!!!!! altho its on the viola =(((( not as awesome on the viole\a but still...
I'm learning to play this on viola (self teaching myself the piece), sure it's not a cello like this piece was made for, but viola has the same deep, natural sound a cello has. I hope when I play this piece, it will keep all the magnificence that performance creates. Sorry for bad grammar, English is my second language. :)
im going to see julian lloyd webber in concert hopefully next week. iv been playing the cello for 7 years but iv never really seen a proffesional. Cant wait :)
Oh! So beautiful! I am a cello player, and I would love to play this with two celli, I have a recording of it played this way. Stunning. I think the cello is so soulful to listen to, and also to play. It's a gift...
I've always liked 'Air on the G string' no matter what instrument it is played on as I think it is just a wonderful piece of music. I would have to say though that my preference is for the cello because it sounds simply divine - it's mellow, deep, hauntingly sad and melancholic - just beautiful.
The Cello (Violoncello meaning large small violin) Is said to be the closest relative as an instrument to the human being, it must be that it has a range of notes closest to the human singing range, but to me its more than that, I have related so well with the instrument and I have progressed much, because my hearts song is the cello, and it is my favorite instrument by far, it is the most beautiful sounding as to anyone who hears this piece is at peace.
You can always rent a cello and try it for a month or two to see how you like it. You can also learn from a book or the internet... the joy of being able to play the cello is worth every penny.
Beautifully done. It's nice and simple too, a lot of the best music is - so simple, yet we still would never come up with it ourselves. Glad it's referred to as Air on 'the' G String too! Hate it when people say Air on 'a' G string - it's THE G string of the violin lol. But anyway, that's a menial matter compared to the intense beauty...
To mention it for the 1000th time beneath that video:
The name "Air on the G string" derives from a arrangement done by the violinist August Wilhelm. He rewrote the air from bachs 3rd orchestra suite to be played on the G-string of a violin(!) only and this name became widly accepted
It depends on the version. One of the versions I have has it written in A Major, 4/4, first note beginning on a C#, and another is written in C Major, 8/8, first note beginning on an E natural. It really depends on who arranged it. Bach may have written it originally in D Major, but it really has changed a lot over the years.
The original piece is part of Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068, written for his patron Prince Leopold of Anhalt sometime between the years 1717 and 1723.
The title comes from violinist Wilhelmj's late 19th century arrangement of the piece for violin and piano. By transposing the key of the piece from its original D major to C major and transposing the melody down an octave, Wilhelmj was able to play the piece on only one string of his violin, the G string.

This tune is so very beautiful and Bach was greatly gifted to write music as enchanting as this. If they play this in heaven I hope I'm there to hear it.I wish well to you all.
Very Nice...I would only say I'd like it better with the vibrato slowed a little and less of it. I like extremely subtle vibrato on Bach. Just a minor quibble.
I also am a cello player, and love the work of Julian lloyd Webber. But guys,he didnt play it on the G string, he played it on A and D... But I agree that this is the real music! =D
this is real music ... people these days think it's boring and only grandpa listens this ... but if you listen carefully ... every instrument that takes part at a song ... you can feel what the composer was feeling in those moments
Being a cello player myself, I'd like to know where to get a version of this particular version of Air. If anyone knows a website, please post a comment with the link in it. Thanks :)
One thing I look for in playing is intonation. On something this slow, if you can't nail the pitch, you need to sell your axe on eBay and flip burgers. This guy nailed it. I'm going to check out more of his stuff!
