I went to Germany once too, and took a short detour to belgium. I didn't bother to learn any french or dutch because I wasn't planning on going there, so I spoke a little german (because some do speak german there too).

You can always spot a yank tourist is europe, most of them have to have an item of clothing on with the American flag. If on their own they are ok but in a group they can be rude and loud seen this many of times in Rhodes when they come on shore from they cruises. I always humored them and tried to help them as much as I could because they made the effort, and seemed nice. Most americans would do the same if someone was friendly and needed help.

Maybe she was in Germany, or Switzerland and at the spur of the moment decided to take eurorail down to italy for a few day detour with some friends. Of course she would know they speak italian in Italy. Maybe she thought she would have some luck with german given that many europeans speak several languages. Maybe she wasn't even planning on going to italy until the last minute.
