  • Hell yeah! Born and raised in NorCal! Wohoo! lol

  • City ? *mwah* grrrowllllll

  • nice choice : ) my fav as well

  • @AN854292 He first said New York, where the gay population dwarfs San Francisco's? So, NYC is probably the favorite of gays, right?

Instead assigning some sophomoric generalization to the man because he's gay, why not accept his several well-informed reasons for liking Northern California instead of assigning some "gay" motive? He doesn't live here to benefit from a city that invites its gay citizens to live openly without fear. (BTW, No one who lives here calls it Frisco.)

  • Listen to that growl at 0:13 <3

  • While Sequoia is amazing, he's speaking of the Red Woods. Sequoias are about 4-5 hours south east.

  • I'd have to agree with him if I was rich. If I was not rich I'd have to say Alamogordo, NM.

  • He meant Redwood National Park. Also, 0:12 Grrrr!

  • People who don't say Alaska are the same group of people who have never been to Alaska.

  • @TheRoyalFuzzybug Stephen Fry has been to Alaska and I've been to Alaska and it's very beautiful. However its too cold and the days are too long in the summer and the nights too long in the winter.

Also Alaskans have been known to elect politicians of questionable intelligence.

  • "you've got yourself quite a nation here"

    oh gosh

    thanks

  • Mine: Chicago, Boston, Seattle, New York, Denver

  • He needs to go to Alaska.

  • If I didn't have family here in Tennessee, I think SF would be in my Top-5 choices:

Vancouver, Seattle, San Fran, Portland, or Denver.

On the flip side, my idea of Hell On Earth is: Detroit, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia or DC.

  • @TruthJockey Portland? as in Portland, Texas?

  • Clicked. Read the description. Turned it off before it started because you told everything in the description.

  • why do they caption him with 'comedian' :( he's so many things!

  • I love that noise he made around 0:13.

  • Mmm, no comments on the Midwest, as per usual. :) That's OK, we're of no real import anyway.

  • NEW HAAAAAAAAAAMPSHIRE

  • San Diego > San Francisco

  • i like the fact that hes actually been to america and speaks his opinion not like most the people on youtube whove never been to america and talk shit.

  • @TheIniquitous21 I agree, I just saw the series, and he did have some sny coments

but on the whole he was very respectful and acctually seemed to enjoy himsef too, and added his humor to it which made it fun to watch..

  • @TheIniquitous21 exactly

  • @TheIniquitous21

    This. So much this.

  • He's talking about Redwood National Park... Sequoia isn't up near the Oregon border. Both are stunning places though and not too far from San Francisco.

  • WELLLLLLLLLLL I'VEEEEE already been to Paris, I've been to Rome (dum di dum di dumidum day) what did i do, but miss my home? OHHH, NEW ENGLAND!!

  • beautiful city scenically, but it has far too many crazy homeless people and pretentious post-hippie liberals to be a very enjoyable city overall.

  • I bought his book about his 'tour' of America for his documentary and I noticed he wrote about how he disliked almost all American cheese with the exception of some in Wisconsin. I agree that any food in a spray can will suck, but he also insulted Vermont Cheddar. I was a bit shocked because it's made the exact same way it always has.

  • @vtc193 We do have the best cheese here in Wisconsin. ;)

  • @PlannedObsolescence

I've had your cheese and that cheese soup (it's awesome). I'm just surprised that he didn't like our extra sharp.

  • @vtc193 I LOVE your extra sharp! What's not to like about any extra sharp cheese?

  • @PlannedObsolescence

In his book (I didn't watch the series) he said American Cheeses are crude bastardizations of European ones. To an extent that may be true, but neither Wisconsin or Vermont cheese is made on an assembly line. I didn't get enough information in his chapter on Vermont to know if he actually tired our cheddar. I have a feeling I sound like a crazy person who is just obsessed with cheese. That's mostly not true.

  • @vtc193 Haha. That's okay. Cheese makes everything better.

  • b..b...but what about the Midwest??? Ok....so it sucks, except for Illinois and Michigan.

  • Chicago? Fuck Chicago. Chicago is a shit city with shit inhabitants. Oh sure Chicago, say you're sorry all you want. You can stuff your sorry! The one thing I do want from you, you can't give back to me, and that's my dignity. I have insisted, and I insist to this very day that someone spiked my tacos with PCP or a similar substance, because I've never behaved that way in a restaurant, and I have no recollection of tearing the back seat of that police car apart with my teeth.

  • He has good taste! NorCal ftw! :)

  • San Francisco fucking sucks.

  • CUNT. Yeah I mean Fry.

  • he should have said Milwaukee

  • Why does america seem civilized when described by this man?

  • @AlexanderMazarakis Because he is more impartial and intelligent than you, perhaps?

  • @Supermassively Well, it might also be because he isn't as rude as you are.

  • @AlexanderMazarakis You confuse "rude" and "honest and intelligent". Sorry that it's so difficult for you.

  • @Supermassively arrogance cannot change the fact that you are very rude.

  • Not sure it's possible to waterboard oneself

  • Oh god, that purr! Stephen Fry, if I were a man and your age, I'd have a crush on you.

  • Thank you, Stephen Fry! I find Britain to be a fine country, as well!

  • Comment removed

  • Flattered to know that Sherlock Holmes' brother likes my country. ;-)

  • tl;dr: Stephen Fry likes America.

  • @evilanagram wouldn't it be tl;dw?

  • Woah.....He pronounced "Oregon" right!

  • Hey "bigthink", you do know that detailing what Stephen says in your description kills the suspense and drives people away from watching the complete clip? IT NEGATES THE TEASER IN THE TITLE.

  • he dedicated a large bit of time in his series to the bluegrass...bourbon and horses!

  • who would have guessed that he would choose san francisco as his favourite american city...

  • emerald triangle

  • Notice he didn't say anything about the south. Smart man.

  • Comment removed

  • @Gardialvoir2 how? great non hillbilly cities in the south

  • @Gardialvoir2 he said South Carolina :0 we are defiantly in the south. Though I don't know WHY he said South Carolina o.O

  • @Gardialvoir2 Clearly you didn't watch the series, then. He enjoyed the South immensely (especially Georgia and Kentucky).

  • @Gardialvoir2 New Orleans, bro. We duel at dawn.

  • There are so many cool places in the United States most Americans will never get to see them all. I would agree San Francisco is up there with the best.

  • SPOILER ALERT

  • I'm a little shocked he mentioned lowland South Carolina and Beaufort. It's not because I think he's wrong (he's not) but it is hard to pin down exactly why I find this shocking. I guess picturing Stephen Fry having some low country boil or walking through the art district of Savannah is hard to visualize. Maybe it's because it seems like one of those places that often goes unmentioned, yet regional folks love. Don't know, don't care. Thanks for the compliment Mr. Fry.

  • @fofalooza Mister Fry never pretends to know anything. His is usually using true knowledge and 1st hand opinion. He puts the smaller villages on the same emotional scale as New York - A mark of a true poet. I'm sure they are all quite beautiful.

  • Trolling

  • America! Fuck ya

  • Or how he would spell it "favourite"

  • Stephen darling come to San fran again and I can show you the cool places we locals know about that the tourists usually don't get to see!

  • why thank you Mr. Fry

  • "Englishman not shitting on the States"

Usually people criticise just (d) - which you would not expect otherwise

The States - is an ambiguous term - there's (a) the country of many parts (b) many different people of same (c) positive actions carried out in the name of those people (d) the negative actions of same (e) ...

Englishman - I did not realise the English merited the badge - #1 Critic of the US - although they can sometimes be spotted in the sometimes overcrowded club

  • @OghamTheBold what are you on about ? go and have a lie down with a damp flannel on your face

  • nor cal really is awesome.

  • he said cali cus there's weed grown so much over there

  • It's nice to see an Englishman not shitting on the States for once.

  • So, Stephen, basically all of them?

  • He likes all the places I've lived or spent loads of time. Except Kentucky. Never been there. What a lucky guy I am. Quite surprised he chose SFO over NYC. BTW, the man's a genius and seems genuinely kind.

  • I love Stephen Fry. He is an incredibly smart, classy and funny man. I'm from Ohio and I think he'd love it here in the fall and winter.

  • @johnhamilton08 Yeah you have Cedar point.

  • @IFknHateUTube Why do I get the feeling you don't really have any idea what communism is?

  • @IFknHateUTube You do realize that San Francisco is considered a major financial center, where most of the major banks keep their west coast offices, right?

  • @IFknHateUTube You clearly don't know what communism is if you think San Fran is a "communist utopia". A communist utopia which is responsible for Silicon Valley, the web startups and the technology revolution? Where would you be if it weren't for San Francisco and the Bay Area? Where would the economy be? You sir, are an idiot.

  • @adi87tya He didn't say San Jose, Oakland or Fremont you dumbfuck he said San Fransisco.

  • @IFknHateUTube And SF is part of the tech revolution. There are a lot of software and web companies here.

  • @IFknHateUTube you cant even spell it you div

  • @CornishCockney fuck off chav. You're too worthless to bother correcting.

  • @IFknHateUTube You're an idiot. SF is one of the main centres for the tech revolution and a major banking and shipping centre too. If SF is communist then Montana is fascist.

  • @IFknHateUTube Im mean seriously dude? Eurofags? Communist? Europe is a market economy with a regulated but rather free and innovative market, and San Francisco is one of the richest cities in the world. Hardly a sign of communism. You're just an uneducated idiot.

  • Wow. That is really cool.

  • San Francisco...what a surpise. One of the two most nauseating cities in the country (the other being Lost Wages).

  • How did I just know he was going to say San Francisco?

  • Summary of his answer: "Well, I love Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota, Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota, Wichita, Tulsa, Ottawa, Oklahoma, Tampa, Panama, Mattawa, La Paloma, Bangor, Baltimore, Salvador, Amarillo, Tocapillo, Baranquilla, and Perdilla...and I love Boston, Charleston, Dayton, Louisiana,Washington, Houston, Kingston, Texarkana, Monterey, Faraday, Santa Fe, Tallapoosa, Glen Rock, Black Rock, Little Rock, Oskaloosa, Tennessee to Tennesse Chicopee, Spirit Lake, Grand Lake, etc."
  • @yurismir1 Toronto isn't in the U.S....

  • @KittyKattyYukiLvr Yes it is. It's in Ohio. PS, the comment you replied to was from over a month ago. You must have a really sad life if you have time to go through all the comments and read each one in its entirety. I feel sorry for you.

  • San Francisco loves you right back.

  • I remember seeing him on The One Show and when asked what his favorite state was he responded Kentucky.

  • San Francisco is a liberal's paradise. As a Christian, a Conservative and a Traditionalist I think I will avoid San Francisco.

  • @MrEnlighteneddespot San Francisco is about 20 years ahead of the rest of america and 10 years behind Europe. Next time you fell like time travelling, hop on a plane to either of these places.

  • @soundslave yes... Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain... all ten years ahead of us and laughing whilst looking back. you're right on the button.

  • @soundslave That is why I wan't to avoid to. When you mean 'ahead' you mean secularism which I detest.

  • @MrEnlighteneddespot Then you must hate the USA because we are as secular as the rest of them, legally.

  • @MrEnlighteneddespot Sounds like you might like it better in San Diego.

  • @MrEnlighteneddespot u have something in common with the taliban, both you and them hate secularism.

  • @MrEnlighteneddespot Liberals paradise must mean: rich, innovative, productive, clean, diverse, a center for banking and tech productive and growing then. Whats wrong with that then. Oh I see, you haven't actually been there.

  • @MrEnlighteneddespot You've got quite an ironic username for a Conservative Christian . :-P

  • Just a 'comedian'? He's a British national treasure!

  • Thank you Stephen Fry!

  • YEAAA!!!! San Fran!!! Nor-Cal!! Represent!

  • San Fran is my first guess

  • It is refreshing to hear a representative of the UK saying kind, even glowing, comments on the USA. There are many haters from UK that enjoy bashing us. Hate our politicians, but you'll not finder, kinder, more hospitable people then in the US.

  • @yokie52 Well, you'll generally find that Stephen Fry is a more erudite, well-spoken and generally pleasant fellow than most people on the internet, regardless of their individual places of origin. :)

  • @yokie52 Yes, you will find plenty of such people on youtube (and it works the other way too - people from the US slagging off the UK) but that's just youtube - it provides a home from home for emotionally underachieving bigots and xenophobes from all corners of the world. The British people are not especially immune from such stupidity - but I doubt they are especially prone to it either.

  • Hm. I live in San Francisco. It smells like pee.

It does have its charms too, though. For example, it shares the same initials as you-know-who.

Stephen's travelogue serves as an inspiration for a cross-country trip I'm doing next month. There are some areas I intend to visit as a direct result of what he wrote about them in his book. Thank you, SF!

  • @rashidclark "Come to San Francisco. The city that smells like pee." I'm surprised the tourist board hasn't picked up on that one yet.

  • @rashidclark For a second there I thought you meant Voldemort. Haha.

Only certain parts smell like pee XD

  • @rashidclark Dude parts of NY smell like pee too. I love SF. Esp the mission.

  • @rashidclark That's true of downtown NY as well. In terms of clean downtown areas, Austin, Texas is pretty nice.

  • I wonder if Stephen is aware of the stereotype that San Francisco has.

  • @brogin There are uncontacted tribes of Brazilian natives who are aware of the stereotype that San Francisco has, so as a bisexual man, I'm sure he probably is.

  • @DarkRider69 Stephen Fry isn't bisexual, he's gay.

  • @khigher He did say on the Ron Brydon Show that he has been attracted to women on occasion and once contemplated asking out a make-up girl on Blackadder who ended up marrying Rowan Atkinson.

  • Droppin New Hampshire, shit yeahhhhh

  • He ended up just pretty much mentioning the entirity of the U.S.

  • how does these videos not have more views?

  • That growl is just...cute! Can't really think of any other word for it ;) Seems to me that Stephen liked many, many cities. Too many to make a choice.

  • Thanks Stephen! I like it too!

  • Haha! That was the most graceful and intelligent way to dodge the question :D

  • @thegyger He did answer the question. He said San Fransisco.

  • Favourite!!!
