And I'm so fucking tired of this America only cares about oil, Israel, and money. I'm no ignorant rah, rah patriotic apologist for the USA, but what the hell you think drives other countries foreign policy? What do other countries want from US? Access to our consumer markets! Ya think the Chinese are building roads in Africa (with all Chinese crews btw) to help their infrastructure and mobility? They do it so they ship Africa's mineral wealth back to China.
There is middle ground. YES De Beers is doing awful things in Africa, as are the foremen and soldiers who hack children. NO Cat Power is not evil for singing the song. I always wanted her to record a full length cover, but I don't blame her for not doing it. Who wants to be called a baby killer?
If Cat Power is to Blame, then so are all the women I've met that want nice juicy diamonds for engagement rings. (And let's not forget Paris, and Kobe's Wife)
Maybe that diamond necklace only cost a 7yo boy an arm, and his mother raped while his father was killed in front of him. The only reason they finally did something about this was because of image.. DeBeers! How much of the profits from diamond mining has helped the African countries that mine them? Don't like it?> Don't read it. Don't think about it. You saw a few images in a video clip. Poor you. A million+ people watched horrific things done firsthand or had it happen TO THEM!
AND YOUR GOVERNMENT SAYS AND DOES WHAT ABOUT THIS? btw it took about 20 years of this before the united states took any real action towards what they knew about 15 years or so earlier. Welcome the the country that don't give a f-- about you unless you spew oil or your name is Israel. Where is the conscience in our leaders? spend a f-- TRILLION on Iraq and Afghanistan and ZERO towards a country of people enslaved, limbs cut off by a rogue army, systematically raped, killed, and tortured. :-p
General Cordswainer just put out a cover of this song. It's like a mix between Cat Power and Mazzy Star. Very sexy & a bit smoother than the Cat Stevens version. Totally recommended for your first dance at your wedding if you're a fan of Indie/Folk/Acoustic Rock.
De Beers and Anglo American are doing nothing but helping Africans get jobs, not destroying Africa. Do you know how much worse Africa would be without foreign investment? The great nations Canada, United States, and Australia were all developed by foreign investment and colonization.
sooo, the subliiminal poverish pictures of Africa sharpy contrast the serene treasurable moments of middle class America involving a gift of very valuable jewelry. While on the other side of the globe not only is jewelry harvested in Africa but the people are starving. We should feel guilty?
....dang it. I was just looking for the song, and BAM...I get a whole bunch of shock pics. ...it's not like I don't support Africa, but come on...I spilled my soda all over myself because I was shocked by the pics.
my guess for why she "sold her soul to the evil empire" is because no one buys cd's anymore.. music is free on the internet.. how the hell else is she.. or any other artist going to make money?? look at feist, modest mouse, wilco, grant lee buffalo, adele, regina spektor, or the postal service.. they and countless others did the same thing. who cares?
Thank you for making this. The juxtiposition of a beutiful love song with these terrible images really says something. I agree with you, why would she do this? But at any rate, the combination of the music and the images leands a powerful second meaning to phrases like "I'm always thinking of you" and "I can't find the right words to say..."
Nice.. DeBeers is so colonial. I don't own any diamonds, but how stupid is it that if I should ever buy one I'll get to think about African military groups funding their incredibly violent power struggles with the money I just paid? And there's seriously no way to tell.. even if all consumers made a pact to pay the extra cost for diamonds that aren't blood diamonds, the companies would keep buying them from warzones, and raise the prices to convince us otherwise. They'd just make a better profit
I cant believe people is watching mutilated people and they say, OooOOoooOOOh! I love the song!!! to begin with, this song is a cover, second, is not about the beauty of stupid diamonds, is about the blood on them. What kind of girl needs a diamond as a promise of love?

get a life BRO. dont be preaching that lame hippie crap. let these stupid ass american fuckers live their sheltered lives. noone knows about that other than some dumb "hollywood" depiction of what goes on in a hollywood shoot em up kill em fashion. its a cute commercial.
How are people commenting about the song?! It's about the jewlery comming from Africa! "Ohhh I love this song. I always wondered who sang it" (Cat Power did a cover. Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam) wrote it!) But that's completely off the point. Does anyone care that children are dying everyday for the "ohhhh shiney" diamonds we get here? Of course not. No-one ever will.
I believe he is right. Most diamonds do come from Africa.. and its true that no one gives a damn. Sad... but its just how it is. Fib, if you want to make a difference then go and protest or do something productive. You know one person can change the world. Maybe you'll be that person.
fibijoe, Don't waste your energy on third world countries. First, I'm presuming you are not a major figure in politics that can actually change or better the economy or status of any state, much less a country. Second, how can you really know or change "countries" you're one individual in this awesome sphere, your actions will be minuscule, if not unoticed. Better yourself and help people around you, close to you, people you could actually change or at least variables that bring true results.
you make it seem like people outside of these "third world countries" are all ignorant, rich snobs who don't give a damn. The fact of the matter is, it's the "third world" countries with shitty governments that hurt their people, it's not our fault. Sure, ignorance is bad and we SHOULD care, but not a lot can be done..people have been trying, like the whole world hunger dilemma? We give so much food, it is just their governments that take it away from them to feed their war-mongering asses
If you really want to solve the problem, take it up with the African government. They're a mess. Sure, donating to charities and going over to help out is a nice gesture, people need it. But if you really want to change anything, it is their government that needs the changing.
I don't know, it's difficult to say and it's not something that can be easily decided since I'm sure if it were, it would have been done already. I'm just saying that people seem to have the wrong idea for the most part, blaming the wrong people.
Do you have ANY FREAKING IDEA what it's like to go to bed HUNGRY...because you have no money for food.
Do you know what it's like to sleep on the streets?
I'm giving my two sense about how FUCKING RIDICULOUS it is to be talking so strongly about Africa's problems when FUCKING AMERICANS are enduring 10 times worse here.
We have people that are BILLIONAIRES that wont give a fucking penny to the poor.
Fib, BlackSky may have exaggerated the amount but believe me that this country is in serious horse-shit as well. Africa's main problem is poverty, I admit many of us live quite comfortable while some poor kid is dying somewhere but don't let infomercials distract you from our own poverty crisis, our system is so bad people take years to realize "Oh shit, I'm poor!" Our system will ALWAYS leave EVERYONE in DEBT, including the Government! Why?
if it takes them years to realize they're poor, then they've got nothing on the guys in this video. they can tell they're poor when there isn't any food around and they've never had a house.
You're right, we cannot fluctuate ourselves with emotions that divide us in so many different ways, I suppose you've seen many ads or commercials portraying very poor living conditions, they show you kids primarily to get your attention. You start wondering "Oh dear, poor kids are dying around the world". Yes, they are, not just kids but parents, uncles and cousins as well and not just in Africa but EVERYWHERE, even here. We obviously won't advertise our own moral problems on the media.
I think we all know what the point of this video is.. if it weren't for the Africans we wouldnt have enormous Diamonds like that and we couldnt tell people that we loved them ... :)

its so sad..this song brings me to tears...i wish i could tell the person i love that i love them and still have feelings for them...this song describes exactly how i feel for them.
this is a great song, i was never really into diamonds, i recently saw the movie blood diamonds, and it really hit me. people are so worried about the material things in life instead of looking at the things that really matter. i would give up all my jewelry to save someone from all that pain just for one stupid diamond

I neeeeeeeed the full version of this song. Since I don't think im the only one who is longing for her to record this song then i think someone needs to start an online petition. If everbody who watches this video signs it and then we sent it to Chan Marshall she would be compelled to do something about it after she hears the outcry. Come on now, who's with me?
Look. You need to stop the maddness boo because im pretty sure you have bought a few pair of diamond jewlrey sets .etc. We all are guilty of things. Sometimes I just tell Britt Spears to getover her self and get help beccause as of now I could see her anyday being breaking news. "Good evning ladies and gentleman breaking new Pop Sensation Brittney Spears has committed sucide".
How about you go to every single organization that's making people aware and tell them to stop? That's pretty much what you're saying, so just shut up, k thnx.

Ok...deep. I saw the commercial. I love the song. Want it but stupid i-tunes does not have it sung by Cat Powell that is so annoying. Anyways the vidio sad, it ruind my night. People buy diamonds to show a way of love. Thats all. You can blame big rappers for their diamond infested unneccary chains.
Rappers aren't the only ones to blame and it doesn't matter if people buy diamonds to "show a way of love". That doesn't make the truth any less gruesome. Innocent people are dying so shallow idiots in "civilized" countries can look good. It makes me sick
If they try to take the diamonds they dug up from their own lands, they get their hands removed. It's really they're tribe's rightful property, but they're mutilated. Next time you see these diamond commercials, think of what the company is really advertising and trying to keep covered up.
Clean diamonds do exist though, just not in a great number, and it's impossible to tell which are which and trust a company's word.
Back to reality, huh. Great video, nice additions. Not only is the diamond industry cut-throat, but DeBeers basically has a diamond monopoly. But the song is perfect for the original version and even better fitting for your edited version. Kudos.
Are you kidding? -_- Go to the website they showed at the end of the video. Some people are missing the point of this video ENTIRELY. Still, very nice vid you have here.
damn i love that song especially when cat powers sins it. her voice is so soothing but why did they have to show me the other side of the diamond industry as well.
that must be the saddest comment I've ever heard. why? because it's terrible. it's an atrocity. diamonds are nice and pretty, but the way diamonds are collected, the terrible loss of life and soul that goes with it... how can you respond so callously? the point of this video is to show you just what really happens before that womans gets her stupid necklace and you ask why?
People continue buying them because their pretty. Guys buy it for their ladies to score. It plain and simple. Its also sign of status and I certainly don't see them stopping. Debeers is making too much money too stop now and the government of several government gets a percentage of that profit.
And I'm so fucking tired of this America only cares about oil, Israel, and money. I'm no ignorant rah, rah patriotic apologist for the USA, but what the hell you think drives other countries foreign policy? What do other countries want from US? Access to our consumer markets!

Thats all. You can blame big rappers for their diamond infested unneccary chains.
musicstar228 4 years ago

Juands10 4 years ago
that must be the saddest comment I've ever heard. why? because it's terrible. it's an atrocity. diamonds are nice and pretty, but the way diamonds are collected, the terrible loss of life and soul that goes with it... how can you respond so callously? the point of this video is to show you just what really happens before that womans gets her stupid necklace and you ask why?
I'd like to know why people keep buying them.
thevideoblog 4 years ago
People continue buying them because their pretty. Guys buy it for their ladies to score. It plain and simple. Its also sign of status and I certainly don't see them stopping. Debeers is making too much money too stop now and the government of several government gets a percentage of that profit.
