I can pick up Contra 5 but I'm hessitant as I really don't know what to expect. the cart label reads Contra 5, it may just be another of these versions of Contra but with a different name or minor tweak. or not.

Nope, it doesn't, but in the NES pirate original Contra Spirits ("Super Contra 3"), you can actually set "30" as the number of lives in the options screen.
