Well I'm not much of a teacher really. My math skills have always been week. So I just get by in my theory classes. I'm not a Tech that should be teaching theory. I've got a lot of hands on experience though, and I do allot of "Trial & Error" with my research projects. I wouldn't be a very good Engineer, as I don't think really fast on my feet. I'm slow, and I like to take my time to think things through very thoroughly. So hopefully I can get by as an Electronics Technologist.
I had someone replace the capacitores and I was wondering if maybe it wasn't done properly. Otherwise I have no idea. This happens both with batteries and while plugged into the main power. Have you ever encountered this problem before?
Usually issues that involve time, like letting it cool down or leaving it for a while and then later it will work.. is usually a Capacitor problem. Well, from my experience anyway. There are many things that can go wrong so it's hard to know unless you can zero in on the issues. Sometimes it can be capacitors and or bad connections, dust build up & bad solder joints. The capacitors may have been changed perfectly, but there could also be other issues causing the capacitors to fail.
@NLEproGUY Thanks for the responce. I don't have any skills in electronics, witch is why I had someone else replace the capacitors. So I guess I'll just have to save up and get someone else to check it out.
Sooo... with your project to recreate the schematics of a Game Gear, could you hypothetically make a new one from scratch? Or maybe figure a way to replace a dead screen?
Also I've been having a problem with my old Game Gear, it will play for around half an hr or so and then it will start switching itself off. Turning it off and on again it will stay on for a second but then switch off again. It will only work again if I leave it for a day or so.
Well not really. There are "IN-HOUSE" components on the GG, which were only available to the SEGA manufactures. Like the Sega Z80 Processor and other SEGA components, it would be very difficult to get and exact match. Perhaps with more research and further Reverse Engineering, one might be able to create an equivalent component. However this would be a very difficult task. Perhaps if you redesigned the system completely. Regardless, definitely not a project for the faint of heart.
The LCD screen MODs I've looked at before, and there are many that have already done this MOD.
If you check out SMSPower DOT org. and go to there development forums, perform a search for a topic entitled "Game Gear LCD MOD". You will see a few topics showing some of these MODs. There was a Japanese site that had made a custom LCD screen component but I have not seen it in a while. I'l try and locate it again and I'll add the link in the Video description once I do find it.
This was an excellent video. StigsGameRoom poses a very interesting question, one that I was about to ask you as well. Is it really possible to replace the now defunct Gamegear LCD screen.
One other thing I always wondered about was whether it was possible to create a passthrough similar to the "Super Gameboy" allowing the user to play Game Gear games on a SEGA Master System or a SEGA Genesis. Is it possible?
Anyways, thanks for creating the tribute video! It was great!
Well the GG has a higher color Pallet, so going from the GG to the Master system won't work without the game code and sprites being modified.
However it may be possible to port through to the Genesis. Although I'm not familiar with the Genesis system yet. I've only recently begun to work with the electronics in that system. It's a 16-bit system so there would be both hardware and software conversions needed. I would try asking that Q in the SMSPower forums.
Ah, now that is music to my ears! If the SNES could do it, why not the Genesis. I think someone has posted this question on the SEGA-16 forums but I'm not sure if anyone ever gave a definitive answer. Thanks for taking the time to answer my query!
@NLEproGUY The Game Gear has a higher colour palette than the Megadrive/Genesis also, so you will face the same problems :( Youtuber Thomas3120 got gamegear carts to run on a Genesis but they didn't display correctly and the colours were all messed up :(
Wow that's crazy! Higher than the MegaDrive too. I would have thought the 16-bit system designers would have gone all out for more colors for their games. Interesting. I'll have to look into that one of these days. So little time. Especially with all the College lectures and Labs to deal with. I wish I had more time to play in my Lab on this stuff.
Fantastic Gerry ! Great to see you got this uploaded dude ! Really interested in hearing more about your project on reverse engineering the GG board ! What will that lead to ? Do you think we could someday easily replace the outdated LCD screen with a modern one and still have it run at full screen ? Fantastic tribute video Gerry, it's great to know that other people have a passion for the old battery muncher :)
Having a schematic for the GG will open up more doors for development projects I would hope. One hobbyist might be able to think of something that another can't. Now there are 3 different Versions of the GG main PCB, so I'm currently working on the US version model "VA1". Some users have already done an LCD replacement. What needs to come out is a Hardware LCD kit for people to purchase that is also fairly easy to install. Who knows what will come out. Regardless.....Fun Stuff! :)
@NLEproGUY Yeah I know people have already replaced the screen in the GG but it doesn't display at full screen resolution and there is always boarders around the screen, much like when the TV out mod is performed. Would be awesome if someone could figure out how to get it to use the whole screen once the LCD has been replaced. Would it even be possible to make a small "upscaling" circuit to install inside the gamegear to aid with this ?
Ohh I see, that's interesting. I'm sure it's possible, but I guess it all depends how feasible it is for other Hobbyists to duplicate. That would be the real determining factor. So many cool projects are out there to attempt.
have you ever tried fitting the GG with a new lcd?

@elcheapouno sorry just seen in the comments that someone already asked..;p

In the intro, on the top-left, there's a small green PCB. It looks like it might fit into a different handheld system. What is it? :P
