One of the worst moments in my life... As a Sonics fan I was depressed for about a month after this... I think the part that hurt so bad was that Seattle team probably would a made it to the finals had they won this series because Utah or the Rockets Seattle had there number... This Nuggets team was just a tough group that peeked at the right time... I just learned to tip my hat to um and respect what they accomplished...NOT and easy task beating that Seattle team 3 times in a row....
If and when Seattle lands a new NBA team, I want to see this uniform design come back. The half basketball with the Seattle skyline was the best logo ever.
It's so amazing just how quickly the momentum can change. Most dominant teams are normally used to being up by a lot of points entering into the 4th quarter playing at home. For some reason the pressure has a much more psychological effect on teams in the playoffs compared to the regular season.
If I recall the Miami Heat (as an 8 seeded team) almost upset the 1 seeded Atlanta Hawks that very same year. The Heat took a 2-1 lead but Atlanta barely escaped in game 5.
@505outlaw I blame Gary Payton for the 1993-94 failures. It wasn't until 2000 or so that our Seattle media exposed what a punk GP was. In 1994-95, I blame George Karl for that failure, because of what he did to Kendall Gill. I thought we were going to win the championchip that year, too.
@sinanyongacoglu Not too long ago, the first round was best of five, while the others were still best of seven. They have since changed it to all best of seven series.
ginoongkamote amazing, just what else is there to say?. Everyone who even touches a bball need to all know the right way to dunk, I just of late finished the coaching program over at | 50 inch vertical [dot] com | - I wish I did it sooner (I m barely 5'9!)
LithiumZ2 if you knew Anything about basketball!!!!! you would know that DET is 1 of the 2 best international players ever to lace em up????? 3 words for you from me and a real basketball talent DET.EAT DEES NUTZ
ginoongkamote I'm only 5 8 white guy and I am able to dunk over people. Anyone can do it, you just need to follow the right training program. I followed the one at 50 inch vertical (dot) com but any training prog is good if they work that is - lol
1994 NBA Playoffs: Denver Nuggets upsets Seattle Sonics
No the sonics choked. They choked big time. That series was the definition of a tank job. That series should've ended in four games. If only Shawn Kemp had made one freethrow in game 4. But he didn't and they lost.
It wasn't just a choke, it was first George Karl flying back to Seattle and back to Denver between Games 3 and 4, Not adjusting to the sudden up-tempo Nuggets, not guarding Rauf and in game 5, SEVEN goaltending calls against MuDumbo that were never called. WE BLEW IT in '94.
I didn't see any goaltending by Mutumbo in game 5, they were just great blocks as much as I hate to say it. Shawn Kemp got away with some goal tending as well. Typical of a Seattle team to let the opponent hang around like that with plenty of opportunities to put them away, including two overtime meltdowns.
Exactly...people totally forget that. And how they were down 20 in the first half of that Game 7 and got back to about 6 before Utah finally held them off. They were really fun to watch
and if..they beat utah in that 7th game, THEY COULDa beat the rockets...who knows...and they maybe will be in the finals against the knicks ...but never happened
@KiPwnNubs i don't think so. the rockets had olajuwon and they had a really good team chemistry. not to mention they had gained momentum from their near-choke against phoenix that year. the nuggets did however wipe out the jazz, they were clearly out of gas when they lost to houston. i think the rockets would have beat them, but it would have been fun to watch.
Even though Seattle was Goliath in that series, Mutombo did seem like Goliath at the end of the final game: the big tall guy falling down and lying on his back, except in celebration with a smile on his face. And a ball in his hands like some prize.
In game 4 the Sonics led by 3 with 40 seconds left and Shawn Kemp (79% FT shooter) at the line. If he had hit just one of those goddamn free throws, the Sonics win in 4 and probably go on to win the title. I was 15 at the time and remember this very vividly.
Of course, he bricks both and Robert Back comes down and nails the 3 to tie the game, because GP tripped trying to defend him.
they couldnt just choke and lose to the nuggets they had to have the series all but won at 2-0 and then lose the next 3. only the sonics could be the #1 team in the entire league and fail at 3 chances to win one more game.
I was about ten when I watched this and it still pisses me off to this day. The one year a team in my city could have gotten a championship in my lifetime and of course this happens. Seattle is a cursed city, an anti-championship curse. Only there can their team have the best record in the entire league and choke this way. There should have been a banner that said 1994 World champions in the Key arena all this time. But well... the sonics are gone now so whatever.
@lfigueroa13 Yeah I know. This was supposed to be their year though. By the time Jordan was back 2nd place was the best anyone was gonna do with that bulls team in the picture. But 1994 should have been a Sonics championship year.
I still can't get over this series. If Kemp would have made a free throw in games 3 or 4 this would have not gone the distance. Good Series though!!! Sonics were too raw and didn't take care of business. The year before they took Phoenix to 7 games and almost made the finals.
I believe this was the beginning of the sonic move to Oklahoma

You know if the NBA today would followed the 1st round playoff with 3 wins, Lakers 2011 would have been out.

Lakers were #2 this year.. I am a Lakers fan. Just letting you know. Spurs lost and so glad.
Titanator2010 9 months ago
@IwasBannedfromYtube Um, why? Lakers won 4-2... If it was 3 wins it would have been 3-2. They may get out the 2nd round though which sucks
