It was an anxious moment to watch during the movie alright. But, quite fake. Using the 79-foot fishing boat as a scale, I estimate that to be an impossibly high 500-foot wave. Also, the wave crested and broke over the ship after the Gail feel back into the trough. That much water would generate billions of pounds of pressure per square foot, the and boat and everything in it would have been as flat as an onion skin

Wavelengths of tsunami's average about 100 km while large windwaves won't go over 250 meters. Tsunami's will never be deepseawaves however, because a deepseawave will need half it's wavelength of waterdepth.

I think that wave is perfect and looks absolutely real. There are 100 foot waves out there, if you're interested read the book, much better than the movie and describes more stuff than they even begin to show in the movie. I remember Mark Wahlberg had to keep a bucket nearby during this scene because he could not stop puking.
