  • Whew, you boys have more courage than I do, being next to a 100 foot propeller at 200 feet in the air. Makes my stomach turn to see it on a screen, and can't imagine being there, for real. I can't hardly make it up an 8 foot step-ladder without getting shaky legs. LOL

    Great video!

  • at 2:20 was that a giant dyson fan thing?

  • @foweyrocks103

It's an Anemometer, used for measuring wind speed.

  • @foweyrocks103

That is a lightning rod that protects the wind sensing equipment. This turbine has a sonic anemometer so it only needs to use one mounting location which is to the left of the lightning rod shown at 2:20. A sonic anemometer measures speed and direction. Analog sensors would require 2 sensors a analog anemometer and a wind vane, and would fill both spots. At 2:30 you can see the sonic sensor.

  • I hear they get $70 per hour.

  • why not ride the service lift?

  • Wind turban? Is that what an arab wears on a breezy day?

  • the music fits it awesomley

  • Americans can say ˈtərˌbīn rather than tərbən. It's just that this guy doesn't know the difference.

  • ...why the hell can't Americans say turbINE!?

  • My Polacy przejmujemy ten film.

  • I used to be a wind tech intill i took an arrow to the knee

  • Fascinating. Too bad it can't match nuclear. Damn pretty too.

  • Best channel ever!

  • Whose paying for this debacle?

Looks like an OWS'r below has got the expletive thing down good. What, burning Macy's next to show the world your want to lead us back to teepees?

Wind power is a scam because the free market is not involved.

Oregon and Washington are ruined and nobody wants the power.

  • @Navigator777777 Wind power is very successful in Ireland with the current capacity exeeding 1000 Mw which in 2010 ran half the countries needs, so good that the U.K want to connect their grid to the Irish network and are currently installing the connection.

  • @Flamorgan

Here, wind power is subsidized by the taxpayers. Even if all the machines worked at capacity for the rest of their remaining life, they can't make a dime or sell the power at market rates... We have dams who amy subsequently be forced to buy power at higher than market prices. The problem is not so much the windmills but they re not operated by business.

  • @Navigator777777 But surely that is simply down to greed, mechanically and electrically they do work and work well. If the greed merchants want to cash in or cash out then that is another problem which is why I went ahead and installed my own d.c turbines which are not grid connnected and store energy via batteries, I generate so I keep amd use myself, to hell with the greed merchants .

  • @Flamorgan

    Greed? Not really.

And besides, there is nothing wrong with greed.

The owner of the grid, in our case, BPA, sells electricity on the open market.

BPA sells their own power first at whatever rate the market will bear. There is no shortage of electricity...or water to make the turbines go round.

Now...the wind mill people are complaining they can't make any money because BPA's power is sold too cheap.

  • @Navigator777777 No thanks, you can keep your greed. I will stick with my free indpendant and reliable source of power.

  • @Flamorgan ,

Thanks. I see you are greedy as well.

    Why...how dare you be independent!

What about all the needy without power?

    Spread the amps, Brother!

(Not into socialism? Neither am I.)

  • @Flamorgan ,

Further....the windmill folks want guaranteed rates which are higher then what BPA rate.....wether they produce power or not.

Then...lets say we do use the windmill power? We have to discharge water over the dam.

There is only one dam on the columbia river drainage that actually stores water: The Grand Coulee Dam.

The rest have what they call pondage.

There is no infrastructure to store wind energy.

However, the bottom line is the rate payers are getting screwed.

  • @Navigator777777 Discharge water over the dam??? How can you possibly comment on wind power when you obviously don't have a clue what you are talking about??

  • @jontag78 ,

I am a rate payer for this bogus power source.

Wind power is being used as a fulcrum and lever to pry money from a captive audience....under the guise of another bogus left wing ideology: global warming.

If wind power was surviving in the free market, fine.

I am a victim of abuse.

  • @Flamorgan Your not quite right there. Ireland is a world leader in wind and actually has closer to 1800 MW installed capacity right now. But we didn't get half our energy from wind last year. The instantaneous demand met by wind reached a peak of around 50% at one point in April 2010 but energy production for the year was around 10%. This has increased this year because of the extra installed capacity but it will never reach 50% of our energy needs. And the interconnector is more for security.

  • @cbrady1990 Thanks for the info, I generate my own sparks from a couple of homemade d.c generators via recycled car batteries and an invertor for mains appliances and 12/24 dc for lighting, it is a good way forward imo especially in Ireland.

  • @dkooys european trash? LOL you've proven my point

  • Your reaction?

is it me or is the wind turbans making the landscape look ugly

  • @cutandshoottx

I like the way they look. I love the rhythm of them.

  • @Soundgarden8497 shut up. you sound like a idiot, and you're wrong. Hydroelectric energy requires massive floods and dams usually. Turbines are better.

  • what's the helmet for?

  • What do wind farms do

  • @TheToxic163 They produce clean, renewable electricity

  • That job would give me the willies.

  • lol wind turban? its a wind turbine mate

  • supercalifragilisticexpialidosious..!!!!!

  • they say wind turbines are "ugly"

Well I think they are more beautiful then air pollution from coal fire plants.

  • I cannot believe there are really morons thinking wind turbine may cause health issues.

  • @shallpion I cannot believe there are morons like you out there - don't be brainwashed - do your homework - there is so much available from all over the world - and then form an intelligent opinion

  • Great. Plz explane to all our home association plz alow small wind turbine on roof.

  • switch it on for an exillerating blow dry

  • There aren't enough cables in the world to get me to climb up there LOL

  • This job looks amazing! Although I would probably pee my pants that this altitude. :D

  • Go wind turbines, go electric cars!

  • courageous

  • person:we are going to climb 200 feet

    me:*pees pants*

  • I work on these same turbines off shore, installing condition monitoring equipment plenty of room unlike the siemens type!

  • cities XL 2011 music?

  • I'd love to do this!

  • Wind turbines

    I'm a big fan

  • when he says turbine it sounds like turban

  • Oh hell naw

  • Vestas V80 nice turbine

  • i am going there on Wed :)

  • I'm a chick and I'm kind of interested in going into this field....

  • @MochaChaiChica

    Kitchen

  • @MochaChaiChica Noooo, just go back to kitchen

  • @MochaChaiChica I know two girls in our program, so you wouldn't be the only one even though its a male dominated career field.

  • yea id rather not...

  • Go in the E-126!!!

  • Good god there high i get scared of looking down from my bedroom window but jeeees this well i dunno.........

  • ITS TUR-BINE NOT TUR-BiN...someone needs to use hooked on phonics...

  • Turbin? What a retard.

  • funny thing is that to get off oil and go for say wind power we have to buy generators which are not made in the US they are made in CHINA !! so we r screwed all over again

  • @xadam2dudex Clipper Wind turbines are manufactured in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

  • @MrSoularMan the Clipper plant in Iowa is an assembly facility.. they get parts from global suppliers.. clipperwind(dot)com/qualitymfg.html...the vast majority of the generators used in wind turbines are made in China

  • @xadam2dudex Thank you, I must have misread the information the first time through.

  • Dang i wish they would include the name for their background music, i need this song! :D

  • Get one at Mahaffeyiti (dot) com

  • I TRULY BELIEVE THESE TURBINES DO NOT WORK ....

  • @kernzyp You don't believe in electricity or wind? Please clarify.

  • @marcbaggett ok.

look at a traditional windmill. it has sails, like a ship, to catch the wind. the propellors on turbines resemble perfectly the propellor on a spitfire, or other engine driven propellor. one is driven by wind, the other driven by engine. how do these turbine "propellors" catch the wind ???

  • @kernzyp you aren't seriously asking that, right?! but anyway, if it's so hard to believe (which i REALLY cannot understand) take a model-airplane propeller, attach a bearing to it and hold it into the wind; it's turning - aha!

there even are wind-powered boats without a sail, but a windmill instead!

    /watch?v=IzGCYaJbf0A&feature=related

  • @kernzyp that boat is way cool!!! is the propellar simply connected to the prop? or is is storing electricity and and re-using it?

if your model propellar you mention is connected to a gearbox, then NO , it will not spin. otherwise all planes on the ground would have theirs spinning all day long. we don't see that...

  • The safty devices they are using are common devices other wise known as climing gear, I have some for toping out trees.

  • Looking forward, I'm interested in setting up one of these for you. I've got a 4.3KW wind turbine would love building something like this on some non windy days ofcouse. Call me 304-263-7703 I've got several skills and am not afraid of hights unemployeed so this could be a knew fun career for my family! I live up North Near where the blades are coming from.

  • are you hiring?

  • Sad to see all those turbine scarring the country side and as you can see no power being generated. So somewhere else the really power plants are working. No matter how many turbines you build you still need real power plants! If you want ZERO CO2 on one solution Nuke power. Imagine the thousand of square miles with these raptor killing machines just sitting there soaking up rate payer and tax dollar. What a scam! Cheap way to save energy are CLF and LED light bulbs they cost a fraction.

  • At 0:40, he attaches a safety device to the cable. My guess is that this allows him to climb up, but will act as a break if he falls in the opposite direction. Does anyone know what these are called, and whether or not they will work with rope rather than steel cables? I have to climb the mast of my sailboat (57.5"), and this is a better safety equipment than what I currently use. Thanks!

  • @dotyrs Harness?

  • @dotyrs It's called a lad-saf made by SALA which allows you to climb up and down (slowly) and will stop a fall. The specific model shown only works on steel cable but you could look into a Petzl ASAP for rope use. I'd suggest speaking to a sales pro for more info.

  • I climb these things 6 days a week (weather permitting) and I couldn't ask for a better job. The pay is great, benefits are always nice, and it's an amazing experience.

  • o heck no

  • These things really creep me out, no idea why! but its interesting to see the inside.

  • Old out of date fan blade designs. There are some cool new wind turbines being built around the world, but not in the US.

  • @NWguy83

where to find through internet the new designs you mentioned if you don't mind ?

  • coal power forever.

  • Turban? Isn't that the head dress of Indain people?

  • I'm in school to train for this right now, really looking forward to a great career.

  • @ontrac88 i am thinking about going into this career also, i have heard you need alot of math, what kind of math do you need to know?

  • @99xtremeturbo If you want to take a career in wind turbins you need to know an all around understanding of the concepts of mathmatics.

  • @DBH5601 And mechanics, and electrical, and hydraulic

  • @99xtremeturbo Our school requires you to go up to college algebra. So not much of a requirement at least for our program

  • Not to say that wind energy is bad, but I would have to say that nuclear power makes more sense and is more economical. It takes a lot of wind turbines to equal the wattage output of one nuclear power plant.

  • @rkr1995 Oh so you want a nuclear power plant in your back yard? What happens when it explodes and kills you? Get real dude, nuclear is great, but who wants it near them? And what do we do with all the nuclear waste, dump it in the ocean?

  • @EricsGOD Although I never said anything like it, I'd be just fine with it in my backyard, as I live in a rural area. Modern nuclear power is much, much safer than people realize. While the waste is certainly undesirable (and we definitely wouldn't dump it in the ocean), it can be safely stored in proposed sites such as the Yucca Mountain facility in Nevada.

  • @rkr1995 Where do you live, I work on the Wind Turbines out in Palm Springs CA... Im not familiar with the Ca, since im from MN, but I know Yucca Valley is near, is that somewhat of the location you are talking about?

  • @EricsGOD What a coincidence; I too, live in Minnesota. The Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository is located about 80 miles northwest of Las Vegas, in the desert. The main idea is that the waste could be safely stored underground where if it did happen to leak out, it wouldn't get into any groundwater supplies. Unfortunately, I think they've abandoned it, and I'm not entirely sure why.

  • These things area blight. The economics of running them are only viable when subsidized by tax dollars. They don't generate when power is most needed.

Altogether, not a real solution to the power problem - just a way for power companies to meet their politicized license requirements.

  • @ChorniyKot turbans are things that people of certain cultures wear on their heads. Turbines are these things.

  • Best :)))))

  • awesome view up there

  • I work for vestas and I get to see how they build them...its quite amazing once its all pieced together

  • lol i didn't know it was flat up there....:)

  • It is a great place to sit and eat lunch..

  • i want to have a future in inspecting these..you make good money...:P

  • nice video love it~!!1!!

  • don't fall!!!!

  • how much do these men make? id like to know id be interested in a career

  • approx 12$/hr starting . 15-18 with an associates degree at an accredited wind training college

  • Skeptic, I believe your numbers are a bit off.

  • Well it depends on your roll what company you work for. You dont need to have wind training or college. Most colleges dont even have courses for this. We do have one at our college here. Start from 35,000 year to 200,000 year depends on experince roll in wind business. Traveling tech or what ever. Most compaines look for electrical back ground. Thats all you really need to get your foot in the door .

  • @hiteyho at a website with information i was looking at about technician education said and average turbine technician makes between $30,000-45,000 a year not counting benefits and over-time.

  • @hiteyho i'm looking into the programs myself, maintenance workers make 40-50k a year, and if you travel and assemble them you can make double that. the local program for mine is short, 35 weeks. i'm looking forwards to it.

  • @hiteyho

I build these turbines, $75,000-$100,000 a year, but you travel a lot!!

  • @hiteyho I make about 40-60k a year

  • @hiteyho contact your power company,if they use wind turbines in your part of the company, start asking ,looking at jobs and their requirements.

  • @hiteyho i work as one of the technicians on the turbines and you can make from £50,000 a year +

  • @pureoffroad maybe in construction, not maintenance!

  • @hiteyho ide say a decent amount, high risk job.

  • @hiteyho In Milton Freewater, Oregon they have openings now for $15/hr to start. I guess you can go up to $30/hr. I want to become one too. I am a 55 year old nurse who lives by some of them. I don't know if I have what it takes. I have started getting physically stronger though to maybe try to apply. They will laugh at me, I am pretty sure.

  • @mermaidcandy I'm currently a student in a 2 year wind turbine technician program. I did an internship over the summer traveling a lot. It's a very physical demanding job but i have a 56 year old classmate in my program so don't be discouraged. Good luck

  • @hiteyho 60 - 85k per year sometimes more

  • @Zamriasra Until one falls while you're in it.

  • @rich2rock They are actually very stable :) so I wouldn't worry about it.

  • One of my Nephews works on a crew that builds these beasts across the US! It's hard to believe because he was always afraid of heigths! I can't wait to see him again so I can give him a good Razzing about that! I realy do give him alot of credit & respect for what he now does!

  • I have been up close to many of the turbines in TugHill NY while snowmobiling and always wondered what they were like inside. Thanks so much for filming this. I really enjoyed it. Unless you are up against one of these, it's hard to imagine their size.

  • Wanna dance on the top of the generator?

  • Those turbines are amazing. Very interesting to see the insides.

  • Thanks for the video, guys. As a green power program customer, it's good to know my dollars are going to renewable sources.
