With worn boots and a heart torn between love and duty, often the bravest of soldiers could not find the courage to say goodby to their beloved Lili.Take care ADonovan43
a song written by a Jew Joseph Goebbels ordered Radio Belgrade to stop playing the song but too many axis soldiers had all ready fallen in love with the song so the sob had to let Radio Belgrade keep playing the song to who ever posted this thank you this brings tears to the eyes of a old Nam vet yours truly
I love it when people tell the tale of how a song got started; first as a poem then set to music. This story always blesses me somehow. I like singing it too by-lingually first in German then English. Thank you for posting this
My father was a GI (infantryman) in WWII. He really liked this song. I was a GI in a later war. I like it too. Besides a great melody line, the words do a good job of capturing the feeling of longing for someone left behind. Excellent song, well done.
There is a rumor afoot that there be a new cd release from June Tabor in February 2011 from Topic Records in the UK.It is said that all of the songs will be songs about the sea. Will we be hearing another version of "The Grey Funnel Line"?
For me, the was the surprise and the highlight of the Daughters of Albion; a beautiful and moving rendition and all the better for the intensity of June Tabor. She can get on my nerves sometimes, but she captures the mood and history of this song and almost, just almost makes it her own.
I'm waiting as patiently as I can. Hrm. What could be interesting is if she did a rendition of "Fallen Leaves" from Norma Waterson's album "The Very Thought of You", written by Eliza Carthy.
Magnificent! Why can't we buy this on dvd?Callas,Pavarotti,Piaf,Tabor.Who agrees that Tabor is possibly the most arresting interpreter of song on the planet today?
I'd be happy to send it to you, but I'd need your email address. Or if you know of a free site where I can host it, let me know, as I don't know of any at the moment. (Note, the mp3 doesn't contain the cute banter, just the gorgeous singing).
Well, it appeared on a special in England called "the Daughters of Albion", as part of a Folk of Britannia series, so maybe it will be released on DVD. I just wish she'd sing a recorded version on a CD already. But it's okay if she doesn't, I ripped the audio from this so I have an mp3 to listen to :)
