  • Damn

  • the tone on your P-Bass is nice. How did you get this tone?

  • much needed...thank you

  • Hello, could you be super cool and hit me up with a link for the tabs/ I would love to learn what you are playing over the guitar slide solo part. Thanks so much I appreciate your time.

  • Fantastic P-Bass

  • hey dude i really like it i need to learn this to play with my band but i don`t find the tab could you show where to find it ? thanks

  • Man, I would give my left nut to be able to play like you do...... or I could just practice.

  • Don't laugh, but I use the 9120 Nylon Tapewound Bass Strings on my 80's Aria Pro II RSB Series, even though it's not a fretless. Nice deep rich sound.

  • Great cover man, I've been playing for about 3 years now and I'm in the process of learning this song :) Your video is a excellent.

  • what tab did u use?

  • great job i love how you slide the notes its caused me to modify my version

  • sounds so so so sick, I love that funkish soft sound

  • great job !!!!

  • flawless, wow you're outstanding, makes me want to hang mine up because i could never catch you haha

  • i almost lost myself in that bass!

  • Was this tune originally played on a fretless? With the sound you achieved it almost sounds like a fretless.

  • @winkydee No, JP Jones often uses a smooth sliding technique. Its one of his trademarks. I'm not sure what bass he used in this song, but its not a fretless. Just keep your neck polished and keep some of your treble down. Try sliding in and out of key notes and blend things together. He may have used flatwound strings on occasion, but as you can see, the smooth sliding sound can be made with roundwounds.

  • @BassManOnTheHill when i watch you play, i just want to put my bass back in the closet

  • This is the first song I learned how to play in high school...and I love it as much today as I did back then. You did a great job on it too.

  • Wery well played, I love JPJ bass lines.

  • Wow good job, love the bass in this song.

  • is that a fender percision bass?

  • thats such a smooth bassline nice cover man jpj is hard to cover cause hes so dam smooth

  • Nice cover, it's a fun bassline to play.

  • i love the laid back sound you produce. doesn't sound forced and just grooves along. easier said than done

  • What kind of bass and pickups? please

  • @Query17 Its a '78 Fender P, with its original pickups which are split coil, humbuckers

  • ugh how do i get the sound on my bass amp like this?

  • @almost2714 try using lots of low end and only a little mid range. I like the round fat sound of a low mid range with lots of low end. It helps to use the softer picking areas of your fingers too. I clip my nails for songs like this and usually strike the strings closer to the neck rather than the bridge.

  • @BassManOnTheHill

did you tab this?,or did you get it by ear?

  • @ejdbk Most likely ear.Judging by how he plays.Or maybe not.

  • i love this bass line...

  • good stuff! are playing like the authentic way ? u still killed it nice job . i just pickup a bass & i want to learn that song 4 my first bass song . i play a little guitar .

  • ur such a smooth bass player :) i like the way u play its pretty groovy. u got some good skills :)

  • I was thinking this was a custom made bass by Atkinson, guess I was wrong, they had one just like this in another video. Great job, Love the old Zep tunes.

  • ahhh... i wish i had this Fender guitar :)

    well played!

  • Nice!

One of my favorite bass lines and you killed it.

  • Great cover! Could you post a link or message be the tab for this? I'm not the best bass player so i still need tab. Thanks for whatever help you may be able to give.

  • awesome cover! sounds just like JPJ!

  • A tasty cover.

  • Good job man!

  • Thanks, watching this really helped me learn to play this one correctly. This is so right on.

  • Pure butter...............!

  • i am definitly learning this

  • pretty good

  • I am a guitar player and I wish I could jam with a bass player as skilled as you.

  • beautiful! thats some serious skill! so many bass players tend to 'over play' the bass, trying to be geddy lee or victor wooten, but they dont realize that the bass guitar is a 'grooove' instrument and simplicity is when it shines. not saying that this is simple, but its using the bass as a guitar, which irks the hec out of me

  • Thanks!, I tend to agree with that. The bass has a subtle elegance not to be marred by too much over playing.

  • @BassManOnTheHill Sooo...... Whats the deal with this song? Does it start off in the key of E? Then when the chorus begins it kicks it up to A? I'm so confused... haha. thats probably why its hard for me to sing this song unless i have a guitar with me, haha.

  • I've been playing bass for about 5 years now and I gotta say dude you got some skills! I play with a pick, so getting that tone is tough. What bass/amp set up are you using?

  • @Twolf004 Thanks. Yes, a pick would give a song like this one too much tone. I like the sound of a pick for some songs, but overall, I think using fingers and thumb give more options in tones. Sometimes I grow my pick nails a little long to get a pick like sound. The bass is a '78 Fender Precision and my sound is being input into a 15 w boost, then directly into my Soundblaster Fatality PC soundcard. So, there is no amp in this recording. I have control of EQ settings with the PC software.

  • Excellent !

  • tht bass sounds really good, its got a really clean tone on it,good cover

  • Deer God, did I just type shear beauty? Oh well I guess it cuts through doesn't it?

  • deer god? hahahahahaahahahaha!!!!!!

  • Spot on! I went back and listened (haven't played that bassline in 30 years). There might be a slight discrepancy at the turnaround after 2nd chorus--I think he may do the figure an octave up, but it's hard to be sure as guitar is doubling. Your tone is the balls (flatwounds?).

This just makes one appreciate the shear beauty of Jones's bassline architecture. Certainly one of the tastiest players on the planet.

  • that's a good way to put it (bassline architecture). Jones is a true composer. My strings were just some worn roundwouds for a smoother feel and sound. I've tried the flatwounds and discovered they were too tight and too flat sounding for my tastes. Thanks for commenting!

  • Bassmanonthehill...I've watched several of your vids, and you are absolutely a killer bassist. This is no exception either...briliant, and you have an awesome sounding bass.

  • *wow!* If I wasn't watching the video, I'd think it was JPJ himself playing! Awesome!

Have you got the tab for this (or a link to the one you used)? I've found many, but none of them seem quite right.

    Thanks!

  • Great !!! I love your bass sound !

  • strings?

  • They were either Rotosound 55's or Dean Markley Blue Steel, not sure. They were somewhat worn for a smoother feel and sound. By the way, I don't recommend the Rotosound 55's (Green Solo Baas). They weren't worth the extra money.

  • AWESOME! Amazing job man, how long have you been playing?

  • You amaze me every time i watch one of your videos. You make it sound so good you could play with zeppelin

  • Bravo !

  • great man, you really got it!

    long live led zeppelin!
