The cult of Ernesto Che Guevara is an episode in the moral callousness of our time. Che was a totalitarian. He achieved nothing but disaster. Many of the early leaders of the Cuban Revolution favored a democratic or democratic-socialist direction for the new Cuba. But Che was a mainstay of the hardline pro-Soviet faction, and his faction won.

Che presided over the Cuban Revolution's first firing squads. He founded Cuba's "labor camp" system—the system that was eventually employed to incarcerate gays, dissidents, and AIDS victims. To get himself killed, and to get a lot of other people killed, was central to Che's imagination.

This is what our soldiers must become "— and so on.

He was killed in Bolivia in 1967, leading a guerrilla movement that had failed to enlist a single Bolivian peasant. And yet he succeeded in inspiring tens of thousands of middle class Latin-Americans to exit the universities and organize guerrilla insurgencies of their own. And these insurgencies likewise accomplished nothing, except to bring about the death of hundreds of thousands, and to set back the cause of Latin-American democracy—a tragedy on the hugest scale.

What power? Che dies alone and poor. He left Cuba government b/c he never saw himself as a politician. Power was what Fidel was after. Che went to the Congo and Bolivia to lead revolutions. Both failed due to the corruption and power-hungry rebels not caring about the things that made the Cuban revolution successful.

Yes, the Cuban revolution was a success since it ousted an American-supported government. You need to understand that the USA is not beloved in Latin America (see Guatamala and Cuba for Che's involvement).

Part of the reason the Cuban peopl do not have anything is the trade boycott with the USA. It punishes the people of Cuba, not just the govenment. Batisita allowed 85% of the land to be owned by American corporations. 50% of the GDP was the payouts to Batista.

Finally, literacy and technology were nothing under Batista. "The people would've profitted"? How? The US controlled everything under Batista. The ambassador to Cuba under Batista said under oath that he beleive he was the most powerful person in Cuba b/c of all the business interest ties, including the mafia operating the brothels and casinos in Cuba.

Would the Cubans prefer to be controlled by the US or by their own?

Have I complimented Che? Or Fidel? I've simply argued a different point of view that what you have, but you seem to attack me for that. JFK agreed with Fidel's movement BEFORE knowing that Fidel would become a socialist/communist. Once he did that and took over US companies in Cuba, the US boycotted Cuba. Che even sent JFK a note trying to make a new deal, with the promise of never invading Cuba. Not crediting the Cuban revolution a success in Latin America is native

Latin America has a diff. founding history than the USA and socialism would def. benefit many of those countries.)
