@awaken77 There was no synth sequencing involved! The arpeggios were created by holding down block chords on the Lowery and then using the Marimba Repeat function in a way it wasn't originally intended to be used to give the effect of an arpeggio.
first of all, it's spelled LOWREY. And the TBO-1 has NO arpeggiator. The Marimba repeat is just that...a repeat firing of the note. Townshend played the left hand arpeggio manually and introduced the occasional melodic notes on the upper manual.
@auditiesfoundation Woah!! The Spelling Nazi's have woken from their winter slumber!! A proper glance through all the comments will show that it has been spelt correctly elsewhere, so I apologise for my slip up. And I don't think I, or anyone else, has claimed that the TBO-1 has an arpeggiator, so not sure where you get that from.
Thanks for your input. Did I say thanks? I meant keep it to yourself.
"@MrDarkRiot All these patches do is emulate the Lowery's "Marimba Repeat" functionality or putting it through the VCS. The Baba patch is an organ preset using a custom built arp pattern to replicate the Lowery's Marimba Repeat function WHICH GAVE PETE THE ARP THAT WE HERE."
@auditiesfoundation So, he mis-spelt Lowrey, big fucking deal!! And the output of the marimba repeat IS, musically, a fucking arpeggio so take your head out of your arse and your petty flaming elsewhere.
I can't believe these idiotic comments - I thought you did a great job, also I was going to get an Alesis Fusion before reading a load of negative comments about it - now I see there's nothing wrong with it at all !"!
@MrDarkRiot Thank you. There are so many people bemoaning synth patches like this because they think they should be playing it manually. The ironic thing is that Pete Townshend used synthesizers to create both these sounds in a very similar way. He simply took the sound of a Lowery, fed it through some synth LFO's & filters & just held down block chords. No fancy finger trickery. So, in fact, what you see in this video is more authentic than trying to bust your tendons playing fast arpeggios ;o)
@MrDarkRiot All these patches do is emulate the Lowery's "Marimba Repeat" functionality or putting it through the VCS. The Baba patch is an organ preset using a custom built arp pattern to replicate the Lowery's Marimba Repeat function which gave Pete the arp that we hear. The WGFA patch is just that same organ preset, dirtied up and then fed through a mod matrix to replicate the LFO, VCF and VCO that gave the sound we all know and love, just like Pete did by passing the Lowery through a VCS3.
@MrDarkRiot So anyone claiming that "I'm afraid of getting demanded" or that "the synth is doing all the work" need to wake up and smell the coffee. The synth did all the work in the original!! Townshend (and latterly Bundrick) just held down block chords whilst the technology did the rest. Anyone trying to play these complex patterns manually is being completely anal and are getting it just plain wrong :o) For more info, visit thewho(dot)net and search for Lowery :o)
It does enough to make difficult passages manageable. Its about shaping sound, not being a talented keyboardist. You use your knowledge of shaping sound as the basis for musicianship. If you want to play Chopin, get a grand piano. If you want to make sounds no one has heard before, get a Nord or something like it.
pete actually released a song called teenage wasteland on his lifehouse chronicles box set. It has a lot of the same lyrics as Baba O'Riley but it has pretty different music up till the end-ish part.
who really cares what the song is called. it could be called "the pooiest song ever" and still be the greatest song in the world. just listen to it and respect it.
im sorry and im not trying to be mean or anything but the baba O'riley intro was kinda bad. it really didnt sound like the song. and i think its impossible. i think the who just put on a recording because its impossible to play. but nice try
Call me reactionary - but I've been looking to get another board to accompany my Korg O1W Pro, and after seeing this video I researched it and ended up buying one on eBay! How can I get those arp patches or programs? Thanks in advance - and keep up the great work!
It's the instrument I am using in the demonstration. To get these sounds without one of these, you will have to program it on a synth or organ yourself. Pete Townshend used an old Lowery Organ to do it originally.
LOL! The VCS3 is a synthesizer made by Electronic Music Studios (London) Ltd. (usually abbreviated to EMS). Pete used the filters on this for numerous things including Won't Get Fooled Again. Not a Vox Continental in sight, I'm afraid ;o) There is a link with much more detail which I will send to your inbox.
"Won't Get Fooled Again" is a 1968 Lowrey Berkshire Deluxe TBO-1 fed through a VCS3, using the LFO to control the VCF, then fed through a VCA triggered by another LFO to give the stuttered effect. Baba was a TBO-1 using the built in "Marimba Repeat" effect.
To malcolmyoung86 Baba O'Riley and Teenage Wasteland are two completely different songs Baba O'Riley is from Who's Next and Teenage Wasteland is from the Lifehouse Chronicles Album by Pete Townshend

no, you are wrong. there is another song that was intended to be named Teenage Wasteland. The Who decided not to use it and scrap the original song to build baba o riley. look it up.
Been listening to these songs for 30 years,,,,,,, not exact but sounds ****** good to me.

if you listen to Baba O'Reilly and slow it down to half speed you will find it is actually a piano and not a synth......
neen070456 3 months ago
@neen070456 If you look in the dictionary, you will find that the word "gullible" doesn't actually exist!!!
It is not a piano, it is a Lowery organ, as stated by Pete Townshend, the writer, creator and performer of the original piece.
