Team 118 is probably one of the best teams in Texas, as those of us in Cryptonoite Robotics (Team 624) have learned time and again at the Lone Star Regional. Hopefully we'll win this year (for the first time). 118, good luck and we'll see you at Lone Star.
I've been using this video in my art classroom for the last two weeks with the 4th grade. We're doing a unit on robots and the students LOVE this video.
Ignore whatever this shadow character says, you guys built an amazing robot. I am in rookie team 3624 and we hope to give you a challenge in St. Louis, good Robonauts.
So many haters on this thread... It's disappointing to see these comments made by fellow FIRST students! I'm from Team 111 and we unfortunately hear some of these same comments every so often. But none of these guys will ever know the amazing effort put in by students and mentors in our machine shops. You guys are great! We were glad to be your partner at Midwest! Cya at nationals!
Your team has greatly inspired our rookie team. Whenever we talk about the future or want to get to a level of greatness, we just say "We want to be like 118!!!!" Thank you so much for sharing!! We have an event at Niles this weekend and we might come down early to go the Midwest Regional just to see your robot! Thank you!
Hey guys, you did a great job. I was there and I couldn't help looking at your really cool robot continuously. Though our robot didn't work we wanted to, but working with other teams, sharing the platform and witnessing good teams and amazing robots -like yours- was pretty satisfying. I wouldn't bother absolute negative comments if I were you. Because the most complicated and in my eyes the best robot was yours. Great job guys, keep up. Thanks a lot.
This question doesn't need to be hypothetical. Shadow, we hope to be in St. Louis... if you are involved in FIRST, why don't you stop by and ask our students how much involvement they had in this robot and what they've learned by working WITH their mentors to build it. I'm sure they would be extremely happy to talk to you about both, and maybe you'll learn a bit about how FRC partnerships are supposed to work. What team did you say you were from again?
@johnvneun Again you didnt answer my question, and you had a horrible example, it is fact that the Statue of Liberty isnt Hot Pink, but when i said, "I dont Believe," that is opinion. See how that works? You keep calling me a jerk but the FACT is that you dont know who i am and you keep on assuming so. But know this, i havent once insulted team 118 directly, only stated what i believed in. The truth is, voicing your opinion might be hurtful but I never insulted them directly.
@johnvneun Fact? Opinion? Sorry but this doesnt make sense. My opinion is just that, mine alone. It doesnt mean you have to agree with it %100 percent, i said it was my opinion, i never said it was fact, now it is you who is assuming. You were the one who started this whole thing, insult me and calling me out, not to mention you are the real jerk here, i still dont believe they built this themselves. And you still havent answered my question. You yourself have no proof they built this robot.
@johnvneun I think you are just naive and stupid. Want me to answer your question so badly? fine. First off i never said i did know, in case you cant read in between the lines, it was an assumption. You could've easily gotten that from where i typed, "haha, more like." Ohh and may i say how much of a hypocrite you are? I just said what i thought, i dont believe student built this themselves. In what way was i being a jerk? You were the one who argued with what i thought, my opinion. Please stop.
@johnvneun What I'll like to know is why do you think the students built this themselves. You do know there has been cases where Con Ed and even Nasa built robots for schools in past FRC competitions right?
@johnvneun haha, more like the mentors took over and didnt let any of the students do the work. And this competition is meant for the students, to give them a learning experience. You sir need to go else where.
This looks like a GM team i.e the advisor get paid to build the robot during their work hours and the students dont get to build anything. If you want to see a good student built robot look at team 451's. The students built that by themselves with no help from the advisors other than watching the students use the machines
@natekarate7 What a waste of really smart engineers to watch kids use drills. All team's mentors help out to a large degree, even the ones that boast student built.
@tenkirulez There are a lot of rules you have to account for. Money is but a small issue... Designing is more complicated than you think because you can only use certain parts and there is a long rule book to the game. An example is for the mini bot you can only use FTC parts some team don't have experience with those materials.
I half expected that comment at the end to say "Good luck in Logomotion...you're going to need it" :) But in all seriousness, excellent job 118, the robot looks awesome.
this is like 10^inf better than last years robot i applaud your robot and wish you the best of luck witch you do not need (but other teams might like mine).
@Blaze6030 Whoever you are please don't deface our team or team 118 by saying things like this. You are in no means associated with team 537 so please remove this comment because we do not share in your opinion. We think your robot is incredible 118 and we apoligize for this greatly. See you in st. Louis and best of luck
Thecyguy I'm also on team 675 and there robots are hand built by students and students only just cause you don't like it doesn't mean it's gay I'm pretty sure you actually like this and your just jealous that you can't do it so shut your mouth
@thecyguy1 You know I really hate it when people say things like that. I actually go to a school that competes in these competitions, and I know that this was built by students. Because i do I do it myself! Just because it's good doesn't mean it was built by adults or off of E-Bay. By the way, I'm on team 675, hope the games are fun it's my first year going.
It is nice to think of how much more satisfying it would be to beat that team with less than half the resources, and knowing that the mentors didnt do the whole design and build :)
You shouldn't criticize 118 because they made a better robot than you, you should look up to them.
They have many dedicated mentors, and the team works longer hours than you think. The result of this is robots that are simultaneously student and mentor designed, but appear to be designed solely by professionals.
118 has a lot of resources, and a lot of mentors; beating them is a challenge, but it's a goal you can work towards. No one is stopping you from getting similar resources.
I think I know the person who added dragon wings, fancy touch and I like it. Also, to 118, you can expect to see me back at the competition, all three days. It will be just like last year, sorry I had to leave though.

Our minibot is faster, our design is lighter, our arm is more conservative, and we don't have a freakin' test facility at NASA. To any who have seen Starman, these guys need to take it easy.
