I could be wrong, but my understanding is that it depends on what you're emphasizing....
tenían is more of continuous past...
'they would have lots of clothes' ... 'they used to have lots of clothes'
tuvieron is more just it happened and it's over with....
'they had lots of clothes'
often you'll hear preterite or imperfect for something and there is a slight difference in meaning... and sometimes just depends on the person and their preference.

Finally, one that explains more than just present tense.
I've been through about 5 different tener conjugation videos that wouldn't tell me what "tuvieron" was. This was very helpful. Thank you.

your videos make the preterites much easier to absorb. Do you have a web site with the word bank. Thank you for this youtube.

They had to clean their room...
ellos tuvieron que limpiar su cuarto...isn't it suppose to be sus cuarto b/c theirs room
azn921 1 year ago
no. cuarto is one thing. Therefore, 'su' modifies that.
If you had more than one room, you would have 'cuartos'
Then you could use 'sus'.
Ex:
su cuarto (their [shared] room)
sus cuartos (their [different] rooms)

'Silvia y Carlos tuvieron mucha ropa'
Shouldn't that be 'Silvia y carlos tenian mucha ropa'?
Wouldn't you use the imperfect tense there?
