Moreover, google it, and you'll only find 32,200 results; it's not a popular idiom everyone should know. "A bad penny always turns up" is more popular instead, meaning almost the same thing.
I went to Argyle in North Vancouver with Godffrey. He's a quiet guy who doesn't talk a lot but is really good at basketball. How can he not know A BAD PENNY ALWAYS COMES BACK??!?!??!? Who the hell ever says a bad karma always comes back? Damn son. I'm ashamed.
They like using more obscure idioms/ spoken English for native English speakers on the show.. I mean, even if you are great in Chinese Mandarin, there are bound to be Chinese idioms you do not know. Just like spoken Chinese, there are variations of spoken English from different parts of the world too. Just my 2 cents :)
@248rose yeah, i think the boy just needs to read more. I'm from the same city he's from, Vancouver, and my brother's friends with him. A bad penny always comes back is actually pretty common, not obscure at all.
That phrase is just a translation of a Chinese idiom. I've never seen such saying.
