If the punk comes in when you are not there, your gun won't do much good now will it? Yes, even with an alarm, the cops won't be there for 5-30 minutes, so the punk only needs 5 to go to the jewelry box and the sock drawer to look for cash or valuables. By spreading your stuff out among random items, you have an excellent chance of keeping your stuff. They work in addition to a gun & your alarm. A mason jar in the ground works equally as well!
