sing it Rudder! nobody does it like you, this song is a truly patriotic song, oh the sense of pride I get when I hear this, love up yuh culture. I can listen to this on repeat all day!
To the students of Social Sciences worldwide please listen very carefully to the words of this calypso and you would then understand why this Art form is #1.
I LOVE Mr. Rudder!!! I miss his music. I miss him on the scene in general!! How did you get a hold of these footages?? It's amazing (old and ragged) but Amazing!! I was about 3 or 4 when this was playing on the tele . . . me and my Grandpa. Good memories indeed :-)
Like the sign a fan was waving in the audience that night said "No odder like Rudder" This composition will go down in history as one of the best tributes to the artform...IMO
Thanks for the upload Trinidesi....I was wondering if you had his performance of "Haiti" live at Little Carib Theatre...the one with the harmonica solo?
does anybody know the movie that david rudder sang in? the movie was taped in trinidad carnival and it was a semi erotic suspense. i know the song name is "burnin up" it's a duet but i can't find the song or the video i saw when i was younger. can anyone help?
Calypso is a way that allows one to express everyday things. Problems that are going on.
Just the other night, I was listening to a Lord Superior and David Rudder concert on the radio. LS explained what calypso is all about. He said that in a sense, everyone sings it.
I love that there are so many trinivalists on here. Calypso is so important for Trinidad and Tobago... and the world. I wish we could all get together one day... and start a new tradition where calypso/soca/chutney, etc., pan, and mas are the center of activity... not seperate like in Carnival, but together like originally was. these art forms are totally Trinbagonian. And more Trinis need to claim it.
Couldn't "SOMEBODY" (who realises the Monumental HISTORIC Value of this rendition) - RE-Fresh / re-record ... "What-Ever" - (I am not Aux-Fait ... with these things), Similar to what was done with Nat King Cole's Timeless Classics???
well he sings clearly enough so you can decipher it. i know these lyrics by heart. i'm almost certain if you google "david rudder" and "calypso music" you should find it. oh, it's also on the sleeve of his triple CD - "no restriction live." u could probably go to a music store and get the lyrics off the sleeve/book.
After all the smanchy panchy words etc. When you there in person with a few stag in your head and a nice trini ass to wine on. This is calypso...heaven.
but wasn't the north stand more on fire for "bun dem", essentially doing the trick for stalin? "bun dem" received a crazy reception, and is a classic, but this song will easily outlast and outclass most of the others.
GB did sing Calypso Rising (Taking off dat ole time style putting on a brand new smile...) Calypso Music however, was originally sung by David Rudder is a completely different arrangement with its own lyrics and being performed here. Clearly, if he is at the Dimanche Gras final and performing the song, the piece is a new one and not a cover of an older tune. Please brush up on your skills, sit back and enjoy the music, but do not assume the posture of an authority of the artform.
?! I was just correcting trinidesi about the origin of 'Calypso Rising' and David's recorded cover version. Sigh...this is too much effort to expand someone's (mis)perceptions. Shall sit back and sign off.
In Trinidad, it is our lazy habit to call every local to mount a stage in and out of the carnival period 'ah calysonian'. What do you call 'Bahia Gyul', 'Calypso Music', 'Kojak', the original '1990' album etc. I grant you he has sung calypsos ('Hammer', 'Winin' Season', 'Dedication') but come on, his ambitions have always been beyond that one genre.
Check out 'Tales from a Strange Land' for his most diverse slice of work to date.
while I agree with you in terms of David Rudder's versatility, I disagree with you not calling him a Calypsonian...A Calypsonian is the mouthpeice of the people, defender of the downtrodden, a Prophet of sorts, Storyteller, and News Reporter...David Rudder fills all these roles while putting out 110% PURE KAISO. Eventhough his new music sounds different, dont fool yourself..it is still KAISO.
(cont'd) All Kaisonians are folk performers (in the "Canadian" sense). I will agree that his music is taking Calypso to a whole new level and he is constantly paving the road for up & comers & the youth...David Rudder gives EVERY Trinbagonian a sense of PRIDE...and if u listen to his IMMORTAL "Calypso Rising" he sings how d landscape of calypso is changing...it may sound different, but its still CALYPSO.
I don't want to belabbour the point (as I am a big fan) but based on your logic then Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon and Stevie Wonder are calypsonians - and I don't think they'll necessarily agree. The musical context is what defines the artistic classification and thus back to my old point that Rudder has always bucked the 'ray minor', 'juba dubai' merengue-heavy rhythm arrangements that have defined traditional calypso as I know it.
David Rudder self-identifies as a Calypsonian, and that is what he is. He is a versatile Calypsonian that may adapt styles from other genres, but he is in essense a Calypsonian. Our heritage and tradition makes us inherently multi-layered - not folk singers-DUH!
Well I always thought he was bigger that calypso. He's really a folk artist who dabbles in many local and international genres. Keep going Dave, we need you now more than ever.
Try to understand me, folk artists e.g. Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, The Chieftains, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon and Lauryn Hill, are characterised by the subject matter of their songs (David has often sung on matters of the heart - I do not see a line of any calypsonians there) and the restless nature of their musical tastes.
