  • how do you lock the doors?

  • @HollyBerryBlue I used twisty ties.

  • I love this, you are clever I agree, and also love your accent also.great stuff.

  • @mikartmilo ;) Thak you.

  • What do you use to hold the doors shut?

  • @osteopathforester I used twisty ties to keep the doors closed

  • @BondageNoJutsu Thank you:)

  • @butterfliesinthesky (part1) not to sound sexist, but you rarely see a female doing projects like this. most women usually come up with the ideas , then ask a male to build it for them. i wonder why that is? is it because women just dont find building rewarding or enjoyable or even remotely intresting? or is it because most women only like to build feminine things like jewery, dolls or knick knacks? (cont...to part 2)

  • how much would you charge to make me one

  • how much would you charge to meke me one

  • You are very talented! I could never make something like this without help in person lol

  • @XshizandgigglesX Thank you very much:)

  • @butterfliesinthesky (part2) and just curious, are you a tomboy or gay? are you single, and if so would you have asked your husband to do it for you instead? please dont be offended, that question just always baffled me. anyways, regardles of the personal questions, i got to say i was blown away at how well you built that cage, especialy how you painted screen black to blend it into the shelf, how you built those cool tin can homes, and just how well you lined up everything evenly.

    GREAT JOB : )

  • @yourallbrainwashed Thanks for the comment, not offended at all, I guess im a tomboy in a way, I grew up with brothers, no sisters so did alot of boy stuff with my brothers also liked making things arts and crafts, now as an adult I work in a flower shop building flower arrangements all day.with the rat cage the wooden part was aleady put together/bought bookcase, My husband drilled the holes in the cage for me and I did the rest.

  • NEVER use galvanized! It can give them zinc poisoning! D:

  • I dont understand how you made the doors D:

  • PLZ RESPOND!! Do the rats chew it? Is it cleanable?

  • @nightslash02 They chewed alittle where the go through holes were and yeah it was very cleanable.

  • what accent is that and how old r u plz answer

  • @TheFunkymonkey4u I guess it's a northern accent, im from New Jersey and im 41

  • what accent is that

  • cute :)

  • make somthing so when they throw trash out it lands in it

  • They dont escape the doors? My girl would probably stick her nose in the crack till it bends enough for her to squeeze through. Message me how you make the doors escape-proof.

  • I love how you made this all your self with simple and cheap materials. Thanks for making a great video, I found it most helpful and I'm going to make my own now!! =D

  • @MissLauraCain Sounds cool, do you have a video of your rats and their totes? I would love to check it out.

  • Comment removed

  • @MissLauraCain Totes don't have good enough air ventilation for rats. Kind of like tanks/aquariums :/

  • Comment removed

  • @MissLauraCain I'm sorry, I'd have to disagree. It's a similar build as a tank/aquarium which you shouldn't use for a rat because they have very sensitive lungs. It doesn't allow proper air ventilation like barred cages would. The solid walls trap in scents/fumes and it makes them a lot more prone to URI. Also, plastic over time absorbs urine and other waste, and keeps the smell. But, they say tote cages work great for nursery cages since little eeper rats (babies) can escape bars. (:

  • @MissLauraCain I'm not trying to be rude, by the way, just so you know. I've just read quite a lot about rats and have seen this method debunked time after time. I suppose if they are outside of the cage 90% of the time (free ranging) and just eating/sleeping in there it wouldn't be as bad.

  • And it was the cutest thing when your white rat was trying to drag her blanket into the house

  • I made my rats cage as well. I started with a 10-gallon tank and added 2 more levels out of wood and wire mesh. I am currently adding an addition to it since i got 2 more little girl rats.

I am so glad that you made this video because that little house idea you have is a wonderful idea! i love it!

  • I like your rat cage and your rats!!! They are so cute, I have 2 female rats

  • I love your rat cage :)

and lovely rats you have too :)

  • Rat in a hole on cue. Brilliant.

  • how do you clean the inside of those little houses?

  • sweet!

  • What kind of locks are on the doors to keep it closed so rats don't get out? I need two doors on mine but don't no what to use. I made one just like yours a lilttle but i didn't have that round drill thingy. I cut holes with a plain drill bit and that worked ok. But one problem my rats like to eat the tiles and paint. So i had to use news paper and alot of chew toys and dog bones. Hope all is going well for you and your little raties. =]

  • @healthyredhen I used a really thick gaged wire to make a latch for the doors

  • i did get more than 1 i got 2 there sissys and i just love them so much

  • This is awesome

  • @NothingMuffins Thank you so much:)

  • wow i LOVE this cage! great idea!

  • @MsGymnast4life .......Thx:)

  • hey for some of u that are trying to get a pet rat im sealing a albina rat 6b moth old interested please contact me i live on los angeles california city of bellflower

  • @spoon1235 Thank you:)

  • @spoon1235 get more than one!

  • i like how you say bookcase!!lol!!! good job and thx

  • thanks so much i have a cage like this go check out my videos on it :0 but how do you clean the cage?

  • @xxhellokittyyyxx Wow I love your new cage, looks wonderful and I bet your rats love it. I like the door, if I ever make another one im gonna use that idea looks better then the way i did mine and would make cleaning easier, I had to use a vacuum to suck up all the uneaten food and poo then wipe down with a clean wet rag. I sold my cages and the people who bought them loved them, I just have one hairless right now n hes great, thinking of making him a smaller version soon.:)

  • @butterfliesinthesky omg thank you sooo much it really means alot to me:)

  • @butterfliesinthesky awesome sounds great :) but why did you sell it?

  • @xxhellokittyyyxx it was too big, and we were moving to a new town, so I decided to downsize

  • how much did it cost in all

  • @mrrodent1 around one hundred dollars

  • Thanx for posting this vid about yoour cage build. It was very informative with great definitions on how to proceed. I am in the process of planning and will start build confidently now.

  • Thanx so much for posting this vid about your cage build. The detailed information you provided was very helpful. I am in the planning stages and it gave me a lot of great ideas to incorporate into the preparation and creation of my first rattie cage.

  • @jduthie1121 Your welcome, glad to help.very proud of myself on how nice it came out, and it was just a vision I had in my head, and my pets loved it:)

  • don't they get cold without bedding?

  • @mydogmiley123 ...I give them pieces of old clothing, nice n soft for them better then wood shavings

  • What kind of material did you use for the gate?? the mesh type stuff.

  • @KeySour it's called hardware cloth, you can get it at Ace hardware, Lowe's, home depot, and it comes in a roll, it's a galvanized steel, when I was a kid it was called rat wire.

  • @butterfliesinthesky

i remember it called "chicken wire"

you helped alot! though thanks really

it looks like you put alot of work in your cage painting it and all.

looks like a fun project really and im looking forward to do it for my boys

  • @KeySour your welcome and thank you for the nice comment, it was alot of fun making this home for my pet rats, hope you have just as much fun with yours:)

  • imagion how hard it is to clean that cage x(

  • @morgy3399 not hard at all.... a vacuum with hose attatched sucks up food crumbs and poo, and then a clean cloth to wipe the tiles clean, or I have taken it outside and hosed the whole thing down....VERY easy to clean:)

  • i made the exact same cage as you cause when i looked at this video i decided to make one for my rats i even used the exact same tiles as you .

  • They look happy enough =)

  • WOW, you must have worked REALLY hard with this amazing cage! :)

  • wow awsome cage its simple yet meets all the standards a rat needs im sure they love there cage

  • Can you wright down some directions on how to make one, thanks so much, bye.

  • i got a dog ,but i want 2 mice or 2 rats but my parents are so afraid about them so i will never get them:(

  • aw that sucks rats and mice are great pets! i personally like rats better than mice but they both make great pets! tell them all the great things about them like some are even trained to find bombs in the army and that they are almost as smart as a dog! good luck! =D

  • can you please tell me how i can make shelves for my female, or where i can buy some ??!!

  • dont know how to make them but im sure u can find them in thrift stores or new at home depot or lowes

  • hmmm its uglyyy :-/

  • no offence but i would never keep this, it just looks too tacky, but hey it works so good for u and making it urself

  • How do your doors latch?

  • Please include more about the doors. They are the most important part and I tried making a cage like this but my doors don't work and I need some tips.

  • wow thats really Creative! its very cool!

  • you dont use bedding?

  • just a few pieces of old clothing for them to use as bedding, much better then some type of store bought bedding in a bag.

  • This is a lovely cage, and a bit more simple than some others i have seen. Ill probably model mine i make off of yours :) thanks for sharing!, oh, how many ratties do you have in there?

  • your welcome, and thank you for the comment, I have 4 girls in the cage

  • im geting 2 rats myself they are my first rat but ive had 4 different hamsters, and 3 guinea pigs so ive had experience with rodents ive also handled a young rat(very sweet ;) ) and i was wondering should i buy a cage or consider making one

  • hey this is amazing you have a reall tallent there very well done :) keep up the good work!!!

  • Thank you!! very much!!

  • hi, nice cage! I would add a few tunnels and some more ,shelters apart from the hammocks and visible 2 houses...

and of course, when they get old, they need ladders to get from one floor to another...

all in all: a great cage!

  • Aww this cage is amazing was wondering do you think a cage this size would be too big for two 3 month old rats? Or can you not have it too big :) love your cage

  • i think so because 3 month old rats are really small right?

  • no cage is too small! as long as they cant get out and they have little hidey houses the bigger the cage the happier ratties youll have.

  • How do u clean ur houses? :S

  • one of the houses the bottom comes off,n the others are made of large cans which my hand fits into,so i clean them with a wet cloth:)

  • one word:WAUW^.^

I love the litll houses it's Amazing but how do you clean them

p.s you really inspired me whit the cage I think i'm going to make smaal houses for them on the outside I made my cage myzelf to

  • thanks, just make them out of a container that is big enough for your hand to fit inside and clean it:)

  • I love how your rats really seem to gravitate towards you when you're around. It's just adorable 8)

Oh, and how they demonstrated a few of the things you were talking about.

They just climb through these holes..(Rat pops up through hole)

They practically use the wire like ladders..(Rat climbs)

This is a very good idea, and I'm hoping to convince my dad that this is the way to go, rather than trying to put two guinea pigs cages together...LOL

    Nice video 8)

  • Awesome! I wanna try this for my little ratties! I have a large cage (but smaller than that) cage that I bought for $80!

    Adorable litte ratties btw! :D

  • How do your doors latch? Love the cage, very awesome. It looks like you've figured out a good way to clean it too. I have males and the great thing about them is they don't chew, When you put them in the hammocks it actually lasts.

  • awesome cage been trying to figure out how to upgrade for the one i have and the other that i will be getting soon ill have to try that out and see how he likes it and thanks

  • great job and explanation!

  • Thats really impressive, I've been wanting to buy 2 pet rats for a while, I think I'll try making a cage like this. I have an old shelf next to me which would work gear, I really only need the caging, and some toys.

But great job, thats a really cool cage

  • Thanks:)

  • wooow. this is amazing i'm very impressed! did you already have the bookcase or was that included in the $75?

  • I already had the bookcase

  • woops dont mind that coommetned you explained it later in the vid!!! aweosme cage tho!!!!

  • awesome cage but how do you clean it?? looks like a pain!!!

  • thank you so much for this vid... your babies are so happy in there...

  • Thank you and yes they are very happy little ratties

  • how many rats do you have? oh and awesome cage. i love it! :) oh and are there hooks on the doors to hold them closed????

  • Thank you, I had 4 at the time of the video, but the momma fat passed about a month ago, she was old...the doors I hung by weaving a thin piece of wire through the cage door opening and the edge of the door

  • it was a fabulous video...very inspiration but for goodness sake stop sniffing!

  • Cute cage i am getting a rat today!!!

I used to have a all wihte rat named raser

I had him for about 3 years he had a gf toooooooo lol.I love him and miss him

    btw your rats are CUTEEEEEE!

  • Thank you:)

  • hey I love the cage.. i now have at the moment 15 rats 4 are adults and 2 i just adopted a few weeks ago. and they were both pregnant and had babies.. might have homes for a few babies but i chose not to sell them, either way to a pet store.. but you know somehting your idea is wonderful... i think imgonna do it myself.. a section for the boys and section for the girls.. I will take photos and send them to you via Youtube if you are cool with that.. THANK YOU FOR THE IDEA..

  • Thank you very much, and I would love to see photos of your cage when you finish it:)

  • I think you should have used non toxic paint like you would for a child because the rats put everything in their mouths and also may tend to chew the wood eventually.

  • I did use non toxic paint

  • At first I thought it was the ugliest thing I had ever seen and then when you zoomed in I love it. It's amazing. I'm jealous

  • i cant believe you got a thumbs down for that!

  • cool cage but i would get rid of the paint as ink is highly toxic to rats iv got 4 andmade that mistake to but only 1 died i had been scratching the paint and it infected the foot and then the skin then it died it was my favourite to

  • my paint is non toxic!!! noone died here!!!!! They gonna die of old age,

    thx for the comment!!!!!!

  • you used the wrong paint then! you should have made sure it said non-towic

  • any dumbass can make a cage out of a bookcase but not many make as much effort or pay as much attention to detail as you have. very impressive!

  • Thanks:)

  • i am in the process of making a cage and i was wondering wat is the stuff around the edges of the doors??

  • I used purple duck tape,I measured it to the door opening, stuck it on a cuttingboard then cut it in half lengthwise with a rasor knife, which made it not so wide

  • oh ok kewl

  • How do you keep the doors shut?

its a fab cage, well done :D x

  • Thank you for the comment, i used a thick gage floral wire to make a latch, but after a couple months of opening n closing the doors the wire eventually breaks n i have to replace it,i have also used twisty ties they work well one on each corner, still tryin to figure out something thats permanent, but for now it works:)

  • what about heavy duty staples???

  • you can buy latches for cage doors online. i think Martins cages has them, im not sure if was on there i saw them but i think it was cuz i remember being gutted when i found out it was in america so i couldnt buy them :(

  • cool, I will have to check them out,Thanks

  • OMG, thank you soooooooooooo much, this is going to help ALOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • your welcome,glad to help:)

  • thank you! this really helped.

  • after pricing cages i figured i should get my rats out of there small mouse cage so this was free for me since i had the supplies i changed some stuff though good idea thanks:)

  • thanks, glad I can give someone a good idea for their own cage making, and it sure does save a whole heck of alot of money:)

  • this was a very good idea i might make one i have al the supplies i have 2 boy rats if i make that i can get a third one thanks :)

  • thank you, and your welcome, it was fun to make and the rats love it:)

  • That is so creative-I just might make a large cage for my girls, more personable and probably cheaper than buying a large cage.

  • thanks, yeah it was more personable and deffinatly cheaper, the rats just love it:)

  • about 70 dollars, the most was for the hole saw,it cost me $20.and if you dont have a drill thats gonna cost, but the floor tiles were a $7.,the paint was $8.,the hardware cloth was $12., small nails $3., the contracters paper was $8., contact cement to glue the tiles down was $6., and the book shelf I already had which was worth maybe $25.-$30., so if you do one and just paint it all, drill holes, then put up the hardware cloth,it will be a lot less

  • how much did it all cost?(not including the hammocks, houses ,or toys)

  • your very welcome, glad it helped, and good luck!

  • thank you so much! now this will give me some ideas on how to make my own custom cage that will cut the price down to something that meets my rat crackers, and my standards! and again... thank you so much for our time, ~Andrew.
